B1G releases statement regarding tunnel

The B1G issues a statement today:

https://bigten.org/news/2022/11/28/general-big-ten-conference-official-statement.aspx

Basically stated that UofM failed to follow procedures to ensure safety for game participants and issued a reprimand.

For MSU, 7/8 players are issued suspensions for time served (4 games). The helmet swinger Crump is also suspended for the first 8 games next year. School also got a 100k fine.

Just saw the ESPN report by Tom VanHaaren, which seems to go out of its way to say both MSU and Michigan were equally at fault.

His first paragraph (and the title) says that both MSU and Michigan were disciplined. Then, not till the 4th paragraph does he indicate that Staae was fined $100,000 (or, what I've read elsewhere, that it's the most the Big Ten has penalized a member school.

And he takes till nearly the end before mentioning that UM's discipline is a reprimand for not providing "adequate protection" against attacks.

If I didn't know better, I'd think it was written by one of the Freep / Lansing Journal homers.

I visited RCMB before the MSU game, and shockingly enough there were multiple commenters encouraging MSU fans to attack U of M fans.

And then there's this shit from a Detroit News article about the incident. In which Khary Crump's attorney had this to say: “Anytime there’s an assault where there is a fight involved, self-defense is always in play,” Nichols said. “All we’re going to do is prepare for trial, look at the discovery, and go from there. [...] This was a gut-punch to KJ, being charged the day before Thanksgiving, but he’s going to get through it.”

I thoroughly enjoyed one mgoblog thread where multiple commenters felt jail/prison time was too harsh (don't want to impact the poor guy's future!) for Khary Crump. But hey, if a WMU hockey captain can get probation for a second incident of sexual assault (the first having "three credible witnesses" (according to a law enforcement officer himself), and the only consequences being from the university itself and not the justice system), screw it. If some "common Joe" on the street committed assault they'd surely receive the same punishment, right guys? Commit actual assault with a weapon that can cause brain damage (or actually caused a concussion), and you're more deserving of a lesser punishment than non-athletes who commit lesser crimes without laying a hand on their victims. I'm disappointed in those comments, as well as the U of M athletic department that keeps sending its football teams into a rivalry game against teams of MSU players who have proven they can't help but commit assault on and off the field. I'm disappointed in a way that I could never possibly put into words.

Edit: Poor Khary Crump. Blake Corum has managed somehow not to commit assault, and he delivered food last thanksgiving and this one too. But let's throw a pity party for Khary Crump.

It's like when your mom sternly tells you "and you, you're the big brother, you should set a better example" right before packing little brother off to his room and grounding him for a week, just so little brother doesn't think he's being singled out even though he really deserves to be.  But you get dessert at dinner and he doesn't, so everyone knows who's really in trouble.

Why aren't they naming the football staff member who the Big Ten reprimanded?  Chronologically speaking (even if nothing else) he's an adult and there's no reason to protect his identity.

well....that'll teach'm....

the suspension is fine, and the criminal charges will certainly be plead down, but the civil suit.....

I'm guessing the civil suit is going to be a doozie!   Since Mathers is the Director of Football Operations and he ran from the incident instead of trying to stop it, MSU will be named in the suit, as well as Mathers and Crump.    How big a check is MSU willing to write to make this go away?

I'm neither a lawyer nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express, but it seems that MSU has to be included to make this at all worthwhile to pay for the fat cat attorneys* likely to be leading the civil side. What would it take for the University to be found negligent in this case?

God I would LOVE it if UM brought in riot police to surround the entire MSU team and staff the next time they come to the Big House. Like, full riot gear and everything FACING MSU as if they’re liable to start something at any minute.

You want adequate security? We’ll give you adequate security.

Shockingly enough, PSU is another team using the tunnel excuse for their bullshit (throwing sandwiches and peanuts at Michigan players, etc). There is obviously a big difference between assault vs. throwing shit, but in both cases the tunnel is the excuse for the douchebaggery from both opposing teams.

Hoping Crump leaves either way, but this is a punishment that should follow him no matter where he may transfer.

As a side note to this, the Michigan game is game #7 on next season's spartie schedule (game #8 for us), so he definitely won't be on the sidelines that day.

And I'm still firmly of the belief that this game should be removed from the schedules

1) at least two years (preferably longer), until Staee makes meaningful culture changes; and

2) made no longer a protected rivalry.  Let's instead return to playing for the Little Brown Jug on an annual basis.
