B1G Commissioner Toby Petitti to meet with Santa Ono tomorrow
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:31 PM ^
Inaccurate headline/lede. The article itself said that it was a draft.
As of last week, they still hadn't received an official notice. (see #6 at the link)

How do people keep saying this? Not everything is going to turn out to be true but we literally have pictures of Stallions on the CMU sideline publicly available and Ryan Walters saying publicly there is video of people filming in the stands where Stallions bought seats. That is evidence
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:34 PM ^
we literally have pictures of Stallions on the CMU sideline publicly available
Do we though? That one's yet to be proven.
November 3rd, 2023 at 12:19 PM ^
Boy oh boy is that ignore button needed more than ever.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:42 PM ^
Was it Stalions? The individual that resembles him was CMU credentialed and knew how the rest of the staff would be dressed. Could be him, but even then, likely at CMU's behest, despite denials. Guess they wouldn't know without interviewing him.
Also, recording sidelines of other games is not illegal.
And, buying others' recordings of sidelines is not illegal.
And, paying others to attend others' games is not illegal.
A bunch of coaches whining about something does not make what they're whining about illegal. And video evidence of what they're whining about does not suddenly make it so either.
If Stalions was at CMU (unproven), and if he wasn't there doing CMU work instead of Michigan work (unprovable), then there is actually no evidence of anything illegal, despite your being incredulous that people keep saying it.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:42 PM ^
That is not evidence of Harbaugh doing anything. So we just reflexively suspend Harbaugh anyway? That is overshooting the mark, even for Michigan.
We should suspend Stallions without pay, finish out the season, and then let whatever is going to happen happen.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:49 PM ^
According to the rules, the HC is culpable for any wrongdoing by his staff.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:59 PM ^
That's a NCAA rule and they can't punish Michigan without notice. The B1G doesn't have such a rule and they would be really reaching to try to derail Michigan's season during the season before the NCAA does anything.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:57 PM ^
Yes, anyone arguing Stalions didn't try to get signs from future opponents is wrong. But CMU hasn't confirmed that's him or how he got credentialed on that sideline, which does matter a bit.
Beyond that, if you're going to suspend Harbaugh for all this without anything close to a real investigation then you have to have rock solid evidence he knew or was purposely blind to it, at least in my opinion. This is all uncharted waters for the league and UM but there are a lot of claims out there lacking substantive evidence and since the person being directly punished here isn't Stalions I do get the need to have a bit more evidence behind it all.
November 2nd, 2023 at 11:10 PM ^
Ak47 my dude - STAFF is not allowed to film. Stallions buying tickets and giving them to people and those people filming is NOT against the rules
November 2nd, 2023 at 11:18 PM ^
He understands that is the argument used here, but he (correctly) retorts that virtually no one else takes this view, including the University of Michigan. So it kind of doesn't matter how blog readers interpret the rules.
November 2nd, 2023 at 11:28 PM ^
1. Prove that's Stallions
2. Ryan Walters thing: That's not illegal
November 3rd, 2023 at 1:12 AM ^
Still not confirmed that is Stalions. Even if it is, the penalty for that has a precedent, you suspend him one game, which he already served.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:03 PM ^
I think people are mixing up the timeline here. The Big Ten almost certainly will wait for the NCAA to wrap up its investigation before it takes any action (and most likely, it will just sign off on whatever the NCAA rules).
This meeting is most likely just an exchange of pleasantries. Anything substantive would happen a lot later.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:36 PM ^
Are you actually unaware of the pressure the ADs are putting on Petitti or just pretending that's not a thing?
November 2nd, 2023 at 11:01 PM ^
So what are the AD's actually going to do? Petitti's job is as much to be a flack jacket for issues, and so if you told me this was partly performative so these ADs could go to their coaches and fans and say "we told him you were unhappy" while not actually having to put skin in the game this early I wouldn't be shocked. Because I promise you that if he tries to punish UM 2 weeks after this still-developing story came out he'd sure as shit lose the confidence of UM, who means a hell of a lot more to this conference and their money than fucking Purdue and Rutgers.
November 2nd, 2023 at 11:09 PM ^
So the answer to my question is "pretending this isn't a thing." Fine.
I guess more accurately: Saying it isn't a thing because the ADs are being fake tough.
But I think if Petitti gave us a fine because Stalions broke the rule (in everyone's opinion who isn't on this blog), that would still be the B1G punishing us before the NCAA gave a ruling, and only would have happened because the ADs threw a hissy fit. And I think we would accept the fine so we could move on.
November 2nd, 2023 at 11:34 PM ^
No one is going to move on after a $10k fine. If the big ten wants to get this right, it would commission a proper above board investigation of all 14-18 teams' scouting and sign deciphering practices, lay the report out to all AD's and decide how to either reset standards or enforce current rules.
Michigan and the Big Ten cannot allow one program to unilaterally investigate another to death.
November 3rd, 2023 at 12:38 AM ^
Not a good idea. B1G doing something does not stop NCAA. If B1G wants to put that in writing, hell yeah. Pay the fine. I am sure a GoFundMe will raise $10,000 or UM can just pay from the money they make on the concession stands in one game from those overpriced snacks. But, B1G is not going to do that because they can't vouch for NCAA.
November 3rd, 2023 at 3:50 AM ^
PetittI SERVES AT THE PLEASURE OF THE PRESIDENTS not the ADs.
If you’re trying to pretend you know stuff, you should actually, like, know it.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:05 PM ^
My prediction: They’re going to suspend the entire coaching staff for the remainder of the season. JJ and Sainristil take over as player coaches. Michigan completely shuts out it’s remaining opponents on unstoppable march to National Championship rendering non player coaches obsolete. Day and Franklin are fired. Michigan destroys Georgia so badly, people begin comparing the event to Sherman’s March. Football is saved. Union is saved. Thank you Jim, this was your plan all along.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:09 PM ^
This will only happen if Michael Barrett is named player-coach. Otherwise, yes, exactly.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:11 PM ^
Don’t forget Michael Barrett.

Isn't she an alum? I feel like I'd rather her spit out just the facts, as opposed to some other people that mix in their feelings.

Ted Kaczyinsky was also an alum - that doesn't mean his views were always accurate.

Don't forget about the known sexual predator Mike Tirico!
Dude is creep.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:16 PM ^
? Serious words here about Mike Tirico.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:39 PM ^
Old story, don't recall the details. Young Tirico was part of the sexual harassment atmosphere of ESPN.
November 2nd, 2023 at 11:14 PM ^
I just realized you are saying Tirico is a UM alum. That is not true, unless he got a grad school degree here at some point.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:27 PM ^
Didn’t he start this whole manifesto thing?

Meta: weird... trying to comment on previous thread but it came down here, so I thought I commented in the wrong place and did it again, but it came down here again.

The problem is that she and Bruce F have spent a ton of time this past week, calling coaches and asking them "anonymous" questions, (Max Olson also) to which they have responded in surreal fashion. So she is taking her cues from the crazy things that coaches have said.
Ordinarily, coaches have been much more measured/realistic when attaching their names to quotes.
However, you've got losers like Ryan Walters saying that "they" (Michigan) were at our games. As if these kids who did gametape door dash for Stalions were an actual vast network of michigan spies, and as if that makes more than a negligible difference.
I hope his quote makes the bulletin board for the actual Michigan staff and players. And I hope that they let him know that "they're" at the game on Saturday to the tune of 85–0.

Yes. She was a writer for the Daily late 2000s
November 2nd, 2023 at 11:48 PM ^
But what's she doing wrong here? She's just reporting facts which is more than you can say for the Thamels and Mandels

Alan Haller is a fucking clown who has no standing to demand anything
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:00 PM ^
His concerns are hysterical. Like the UM-MSU game didn't already happen, none of his concerns came to fruition and the only player thrown out of the game for trying to injure an opponent was an MSU player.
How any article can't note that immediately following his idiocy is beyond me.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:06 PM ^
Stay away from fucking clowns. That's what my grandfather told me and he was in the circus for decades. So I believe him.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:49 PM ^
Haller equating criminal battery in the Michigan tunnel and the league acting quickly to suspend MSU players who were *arrested and charged with actual crimes* to alleged sign stealing is really a big fucking joke.
I am still astounded at why people still listen to someone when you hear those words come out of their mouth.
November 2nd, 2023 at 9:54 PM ^
So was going to be in Ann Arbor anyway and meeting Ono? Sounds reasonable under the circumstances if true.
November 2nd, 2023 at 9:56 PM ^
A measured and logical take on this scandal?
Heresy!
November 2nd, 2023 at 9:55 PM ^
Doesn't Petitti serve the school presidents? I mean, the coaches and ADs can complain all they want (and leak that BS to the media), but the school presidents are the ones that sign off on major stuff, like conference realignment. I assume trying to lay the hammer on a football program would take the same process.
November 2nd, 2023 at 10:41 PM ^
First we were told no one in the conference would want to damage a cash cow. Then the coaches threw a fit.
Then we were told, well the ADs wouldn't want to mess with money. Then they threw a fit.
OSU president and MSU president will surely be frothing at the mouth here, and I assume many of the other presidents will as well.
