The athletic department must show support for Jim Harbaugh

Submitted by sdogg1m on October 25th, 2023 at 2:26 PM

John U. Bacon made an incredible and, at this stage, obvious point; Jim Harbaugh's future with the program is dependent on support from the athletic department. A plethora of NCAA investigations will not push Jim into another organization but Michigan can.

Everyone that supports Michigan football must have complete confidence that Warde Manuel and the athletic department are doing everything they can to show support for Coach Harbaugh. We should not have to guess where the administration stands regardless of the investigation. A public statement of support for Jim Harbaugh regardless of the investigation's outcome could potentially do wonders in bolstering the relationship between Harbaugh and the school. Also, a contract should be presented as quickly as possible that not only makes Coach Harbaugh the highest paid in the Big 10 but all of college football.

Jim Harbaugh is leading a successful program with young men who love playing for him. We can tell by the interviews and conduct of Michigan's captains that this team is filled with good character guys that will make Harbaugh look good for decades. Jim built this at Michigan and he should be supported publicly and privately as he continues this work at Michigan.

This school had to endure a long period of medocrity on the football field and, while it took some time, Harbaugh has turned things around emphatically. Our team is enjoying one it's best stretches of winning in our program's history. This team is going to potentially break the record for most draft picks in the NFL by one school. Finally, the athletes that Jim has recruited have done well in the academic field.

Knowing that Michigan has it within its power to back and retain Jim Harbaugh but instead effectively pushes him out the door is a mistake that could cost it for decades. The school must not let this happen. If John U Bacon is right and the relationship with Manuel and Harbaugh is icy then Manuel must change this. If he refuses to do so then he should be fired. Please if you are reading this and have influence support Coach Harbaugh and Go Blue!

I've been going down so many rabbit holes the past couple of days, but with the Stapleton information this morning, it is not inconceivable this investigation was leaked (and information continues to be leaked daily) in an effort to sabotage Jim's contract re-negotiation, given Stapleton is described as Harbaugh's "biggest critic."

It is my understanding that, beyond announcing an investigation, the series of information leaks is fairly abnormal for an NCAA investigation.

If the fan base can effectively have a hand in getting rid of Brandon how hard could it be to get rid of Manuel ? Bacon or some other insider must know what kind of support Manuel has with the regents and Ono !

The football program is in the best shape its ever been in. The team is one of the best opposing coaches have ever seen. Harbaugh could not be doing a better job. Pay the man.

Good luck getting a top tier coach if you run off your two time back-to-back Big Ten champion coach.  No doubt you would have lots of canidates but the top of the top would certainly notice what happens to Jim.

The fact that Harbaugh’s contract still ain’t completed should tell you all you need to know about the level of support he has from the athletic department.

I'd like to know who's in Ono's ear.  Whomever it is, I hope they're telling him he should have Warde Manuel on the clock, and if a strong statement of support for harbaugh isn't made publicly by the time that clock expires, Manuel should be asked/told to move on.

I would say Warde is collecting a paycheck for doing nothing. Unfortunately what he's doing is worse than nothing, he's actively hurting the institution for which he is paid to help.

Don't you think it's incumbent upon the AD to first determine whether Harbaugh knew (or should have known) about the sign-stealing thing before giving him a vote of confidence? Or do you think officials should just automatically offer knee-jerk defenses?

Drives me nuts that we literally had the incredible stroke of fortune to have an elite and extremely successful coach who literally grew up around the program, played at UM and loved the school so much that he was willing to come here over staying in the NFL and we're probably going to drive him out due to ridiculous internal politics.

We were wandering in the wilderness living with BPONE and literally the best possible coach that you could possibly get and who has an immense amount of ties to your program wants to be here.  Does Warde think that's going to happen again?  Does he not realize how insanely fortunate we are that this happened in the first place?

Warde should get Jim signed before the NCAA meeting and give full support otherwise Warde should immediately quit and let Santa tell the NCAA Michigan will pursue all legal means of ensuring both its compliance and ferreting out any enforcement bias sources lest uneven enforcement could occur. Unfair and highly damaging enforcement would remove national faith in the entire NCAA (and ensuing blizzard of media stories) and I am sure they would not want to let down the collegiate students so dependent on this bastion of virtue.

Let's just wait a minute. This sign stealing story gets worse every day.

If Harbaugh directed the scouting are we unified as a fan base we still want him? Because I don't know.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think sign stealing is why we were good, that's being pretty overblown, and Harbaugh's great, we owe our success to him,but people saying we've lost the moral high ground absolutely have a point.

I'd settle for the moral low ground right now.

The story is not getting worse every day.

Who gives a shit about the moral high ground.  Kansas was just found guilty of being involved in a massive pay for play operation investigated by the FBI that resulted in someone going to jail.  What happened to them?  Nothing.  Why should we be ok with Harbaugh getting punished for stealing fricking signs?

Would love to see Brian and Mgoblog take the lead in creating a groundswell of support as only they can. It will be a travesty if this crap, along with the previous crap, costs us the best coach in my long lifetime. Harbaugh wins, develops players, makes them better men and advocates for them. #SignHarbaughNow

Ono: I think we should just sit back and let the process play out.  Maybe give the NCAA more info than they're entitled to.

Warde: I don't know - sdogg1m says that we must show support for Coach.

Alumni need to show support as well and withhold donations. It amazes me people inside the program would do this. I have loved Michigan since my grandfather took me to my first Rose Bowl in 1990 and still do after graduating over 20 years ago. I will not continue donating to a university that doesn't support Harbaugh or the football program.

As a Chicago bulls fan.. I know this story. Jerry(ward) thought he would win without Jordan(Jim). "organizations win championships, not players". Boy was he wrong and it's had an effect on Chicago ever since (FA know how the front office shows support, they don't!). This will kill the next coaching search as well if Ward is still here.

Fuck. Let it GOOOOO! You people are adding NOTHING OF VALUE with your personal hot take. Make a friend who will listen to you. Or get a puppy. Just something else!

That's what we're here for. Our hot take is to vent, exchanges views and see what the overall sentiment is. Besides, this story has been a national item. It is taking all of the oxygen out of the state of our current season of football accomplishments as well as what else is going on in college football.

This story rises to the level of Jerry Sandusky at Penn State in the early 2010s, maybe the Jim Tressel firing at OSU.

How can we ignore this? It's too big and way more than embarrassing to what Harbaugh has done and is doing. Most of us can't let it GOOOO! I personally hope this story runs out of steam and soon.

As I recall last week when this story broke, Warde made the public statement to the effect that they will fully cooperate with the NCAA. It was a feeble comment. It lacked any convection and came across as a CYA (Cover Your Ass) thing.

Can or will Warde change and at least show support for Jim and his program? Right now, it's crickets on the corner of State and Hoover streets.

So when are the kids gonna go to Ono's house like they did when it became apparent the Brandon had to go and the only way to make that happen was direct action?

Jim gone.

I truly never ever believed he would leave (and I was right) -- this is the first time I ever think he will leave; and who can blame him!?

We HAVE to win this year.

Fuck Jim Stapleton, that is all.

So universities listen to people with money (i.e. donors).  Perhaps someone that knows how to start GoFundMe sites can start one for alumni donations (& M friends alike) where we promise to make a donation to the Michigan Athletic Department for use in NIL if the following occur:

1) Emmanuel is removed and an AD that will fully support Harbaugh is hired; and

2) The University and Athletic department commit to fully supporting and defending Harbaugh on these recent allegations AND they resign Harbaugh to a long term contract to coach Michigan.

I personally would donate to such a GoFundMe proposal.

I think Harbaugh is likely gone which sucks because he was supposed to sign a big extension. He's losing so many players to the draft this year, including his fav JJ. Next seasons team isnt likely to be good and the media noise will be deafening about how this proves he was cheating. If this all happened in 2022 and the roster was returning then I think he would stay.

I think best case scenario is Michigan wins it all, JJ wins the heisman, and Harbs jumps to the NFL.

OR the dream scenario is all that good stuff happens, Harbaugh stays, and then in the offseason Michigan donors decide as payback to all the shit talkers they fund the largest NIL operation CFB has seen. Alright I'll stop dreaming.....

The university should rally around Harbaugh and show him all the support he deserves. It’s the right thing to do. But if they don’t I wouldn’t blame Harbaugh for holding it against them later, especially after all he’s given them.

It’s all a hit job and the university shouldn’t give an inch.
