Mlive is just quoting the NJ.com story.

Just my opinion, but Rutgers would be making a big mistake hiring a first time HC. It's a super tough job and asking someone with no experience running a program to learn that on the fly is just asking too much.

The Ash hire just failed spectacularly. Even Rutgers should be able to learn from that.

They were willing to spend a lot if Schiano took the job. $4M for him plus $7.5M for assistants and support staff. I find it hard to believe that their next choice is a LB coach. They're willing to spend enough to attract a good G5 HC.

But why would a good G5 head coach to go Rutgers?  They are worse than middling and if you already have success as a HC, odds are you have better options on the horizon than the worst Power 5 team.  I can’t imagine Rutger will be able to aim any higher than a reclamation project type coach (ala Schiano even without the history at the school) or the young assistant or maybe FCS head coach that gets a job maybe a few years earlier than expected

Not all good G5 coaches are in line for better jobs. Take Chris Creighton at EMU, for example. He's not been in the conversation for any jobs. His next step is probably a better G5 job. I highly doubt he would turn them down.

I agree that a reclamation project is a good way to go. McElwain turned around CMU in one season. Hiring a young assistant is asking for another disaster. There's a terrible place to start as a HC and he wouldn't get much help.

3 of 5 years now someone on Jim’s staff is seeking new employment the week of the “Ohio” game.

Good for him of true. It’s good for our program to have assistants getting promoted into higher level positions at other programs. That manifests itself in better assistants and staff members in the future.

Rutgers needs to use Indiana or Purdue's model. Hire an offensive mind that runs a version of the spread with trick plays to try to out scheme bad teams and hopefully limp to a bowl game every few years. Ash trying to run a pro style offense at a school like that was insane.

They should hire a young head coach from a lower tier conference or FCS who has had some success. Would not go the Maryland route and hire a career loser like Locksley or an assistant from a school that is rich in talent.

They should move to the triple option. Their best bet to make noise in the division and have even the slightest chance to ever beat one of the Big 3 ever again.

If Rutgers hires me, i promise to use 99 percent gadget plays from the most random formations possible.  The defense will be a 1-8-2 with eight viper sized rabid linebackers and a 450 lb planetoid DT.  All special teams players will be from Australia or New Zealand.

I will even work on fencing the garden during the off season, at least until I hit the limit on my Menards card.

Speaking of the northeast, which is supposed to be our recruitment hot bed and advantage, did I miss the story on why Michigan isn’t in it for Jalen Berger?

The idea that they're not just hiring a triple option coach is insane. I get that they don't feel they have the donor base to make a bunch of upgrades to their facilities and risk a recession leaving them completely crushed....so why not hire someone who can win 6-7 games a year without any of that?

Hire Navy's coach, be every Big 10 teams least favorite opponent, win 6-8 games every year and start cashing those big 10 checks.

Pretty good article on the Rutger situation.

*  Should get out of the Big Ten

* Schiano had a list of 100 players in the transfer portal he wanted to target and was already working on the incoming class

* seems he could not get a commitment to upgrade facilities etc..

The comments section show why Rugter will never get out of the situation they are in.

Rutgers' choice is a triple coach, an FCS coach or a successful MAC/Sun Belt/CUSA school. The Buffalo coach, the Eastern coach or a triple guy.

Rutgers' position is so similar to Georgia Tech's old spot that its kinda crazy. You've got a school that is located near a lot of talent that they don't get because the school just doesn't want to spend the money it takes to be good at football. Georgia Tech won an ACC title and played in a couple more ACC title games running on a shoe string budget with wack ass Russell Athletic uniforms because of the triple. If you wanna be Aldi Brand, be the thing that people like buying from Aldi instead of the weird stale bread.

Wouldn’t wish the Rutgers job on my worst enemy.

Their few remaining season ticket holders are waging war with the program over failing to get Schiano (how ironic, Tennessee waged a war over him for the opposite reasons)

I wonder how many more years the conference keeps them around.  I know they wanted the TV market but it’s a crap show up there.

Probably more Michigan fans watching the BTN in NY/NJ than Rutgers fans

Rutgers is in no position to expect to ascend. Sitting in the B1G East, Campanile would do better enjoying his current $415K/year salary and waiting for a DC job before jumping on a dead end HC position.
