Am I alone in having canceled a subscription over the so called reporting the past 2 weeks?

My first post (versus comment) apologies if I did anything wrong, but am I the only one to have canceled any national sports subscriptions over this crap? I just canceled The Athletic and I gotta say it felt really good. My email inbox does not need to be raising my blood pressure this much with lousy journalism.

Our credit card gets stolen about once every 10-14 months.  I have a Fidelity Visa card (reward is 529 college fund) and their fraud department is spectacular so I never get screwed on the fraudulent purchases.  I used to hate having to change all the auto-scrips, but now I kinda enjoy the spring cleaning feel.  I seem to always get to cut one recurring payment out moving forward.

The issue we’re seeing is that the national media seems intent on recycling the same story with marginally slightly newer updates every day and passing them off as “major news bombs”.

I feel many of us would ignore the noise but it’s virtually impossible to read any story related to Michigan football that doesn’t mention signs. You don’t have to necessarily cancel a subscription per se but be more selective of where you go to get information.

MGoBlog is literally its own submarine right now and even a few cracks are starting show i.e. most board posts, Brian snapping at Seth, fucking “sources”. If you wanted to retain your sanity, you’re best bet is to watch the games and leave it at that.

Haha, no. But I get (GOT) the various athletic newsletters and the "94% of college coaches agree that what michigan did was over the line" (or something to that extent) just made me see red. And I suddenly was like why am I giving these people money? I just ordered 2 mgoblog shirts and already feel better LOL.

That story was EVERYWHERE. It was in my newsfeed. It was in the newsletters. It was in FB. I never read it. Nothing about quoting a bunch of “anonymous” coaches - who have absolutely nothing to fear in terms of repercussions so making them anonymous breaks every journalism tenant - is compelling.  Either the entire story is made up, they are mischaracterized or coaches are falling for the same OUTRAGE news tactics that have been mainstream for three decades.

The thing that gets me is how the national media has turned Michigan into some kind of cheating super villain. People down here in KS are driving me crazy. Everyone I work with, mainly KU/KSU fans, keep asking me when do you think Harbaugh will get fired. The only reason you were good the past 2 years is because your team cheats. I try to explain to them that the offense is minor but they all disagree and most think Michigan should get the death penalty and be banned from the playoffs for the next 5 seasons, or get scholarships taken away, and the entire coaching staff needs to be fired. Really crazy stuff fanned on by the national sports media.

Not sure about KSU fans, but KU basketball fans are off-the-charts delusional. Sure, all those players over the years valued KU's "tradition" so much that they turned down big money from Kentucky and Duke and played for free at Kansas.

OSU's PR campaign has worked beautifully.

Simplest way to get people to move on is to totally ignore what they say. People are “informed” by splashy headlines, angry sports talk programs, and repetitive articles. They don’t really dig AT ALL. They know next to nothing in terms of particulars. It’s all talking points. Ignore them, they get frustrated and move on. They have massive cognitive dissonance that won’t be breached by any evidence you can present. They have the confidence of conformity and majority opinion and that’s very powerful for most people.

Most people are sheep that look for comfort in conformity. That’s not to endorse being contrarian  just for the sake of being devil’s advocate, but people really need to think and not just react and accept other people’s narrative. It’s like that stupid expression that there are two sides to every story. No, there are in fact many sides to every story. Sadly, critical thinking is the skill higher education should provide no matter the field of study but it is the skill that is most absent in today’s graduates.

Same. Sports are supposed to be a fun distraction. Why would I continue to pay for a site that goes out of its way to cover Michigan negatively? It's similar to how weird it is to me that any Michigan fan would listen to Mike Valenti. To me, it's pretty telling that Mandel did not retweet Harbaugh's initial statement and has not mentioned Ono's letter.

Just my opinion...

Since The Athletic was purchased by NYT the actual product has declined significantly. There are less team specific and more national writers. The latest attempt to get more subscribers has degraded the product even more. When they started to beg for more subscribers for $2 what we now see is the inevitable. The comments used to be well thought out and insightful, most of those people are now gone. The commenters are salty buckeyes and sparties on all Michigan specific articles. If I wanted to read their comments I could go to the rcmb or 11worriers.

I don't subscribe to any of them as they are all shit. Besides I get all of my info from MGoBlog. If I had to I would gladly pony up $100 a year for MGoBlog access (The ongoing feud between Rgard and Mean Joe is just a bonus). I can't say the same thing for The Pride of Detroit (Lions), PistonPowered (Pistons), or Bless you Boys (Tigers) which I frequent daily and probably wouldn't pay for it even though I love those sites.

It's not that I can't afford it, it's the principle.

Problem is, the MGoBoard is a fucking jungle of insane opinion commentary or baseless intel (90%) and legit/valuable breaking information (10%).

There’s no point in subscribing to something that’s just going to get posted here within literal seconds of it getting released to the public. In order to use the MGoBoard to your advantage, you have to be well-versed at blocking out the bullshit.

That's my point bro. Beeks is correct as well, it's an aggregate, you have to parse out the BS. I also enjoy this site as great entertainment. We all bitch about TruStage ads but that doesn't stop us from coming back.

That being said Fuck Ohio State, Fuck TruStage ads, Fuck Notre Dame, Fuck Sparty...in that order. 😆

If the head in sand approach saves you a few bucks why not? I do like the basketball coverage of The Athletic but usually only renew when it’s a deal.
