Maybe stop going after NFL guys who clearly only have interest as a stepping stone. Obviously, there will be exceptions, but level of interest/commitment to the job needs to be more of a factor.

it’s a catch 22. NFL is the highest level of football. If you are a good coach you will want to try the NFL eventually. If they don’t have pro aspirations, I can’t see them being appealing as candidates.

College football is weird though. You absolutely can find guys who don't want to be in the NFL (or tried it already and have no desire to return).

I only played High school (and 3rd-8th), and never coached, but there is something about coaching football that is about forming young men into adults. I don’t think you get that in the NFL.

The number of those guys is probably dwindling rapidly. Having to recruit non-stop sucks already, but now you get the guy on campus and you still gotta kiss ass and scrounge up NIL money for them every season so they don't bolt to the highest bidder. I don't blame anyone for wanting to jump from college to NFL these days.

I can’t imagine that anyone enjoys recruiting. I can understand there’s probably a sense of accomplishment from helping young players develop, but continually having to try to kiss the asses of teenagers and their families must get very old, very quickly.

I dunno. I mean, Nick Saban is undoubtedly the GOAT, and he never considered giving the NFL another shot after his failed Dolphins stint.
Then again, the college game is currently in a weird transition phase, and the seismic changes that have occurred over the past three years or so have diminished the quality of life for many college coaches. That makes choosing a college job over an NFL job an even less attractive proposition for up-and-comers.

I think Saban would have gone back to the NFL if he could have figured a way to get 15 first round draft picks every year (the rough equivalent to the advantage he had at Bama).

This isn’t a guy with “pro aspirations.” He’s already there. That’s much different. Most don’t want to go back to college. If they do, it’s not often for long. Apparently maybe as short as one week!

A guy leaving a DC job to coach a position is definitely using Michigan as a stepping stone so it doesn't matter if they coming from the NFL or not.

I don’t know what makes you think any candidate sees being a position coach as anything other than a stepping stone. Whether that be to the NFL or a promotion elsewhere in college isn’t relevant. No matter who you hire, they’ll always take a better job with better pay.

It seems that way today, but there were guys like Jerry Hanlon and Gary Moeller that stayed at Michigan a long time under Bo. Were they just more content with their lives? Even Bo turned down Texas A&M when they offered him a huge raise.

Gary Moeller literally left Michigan to be a head coach, failed miserably (6-24-3 record at Illinois) and came back. Eventually taking over for Bo. Crazy concept… they stuck around because they didn’t have options to move up. Pretty telling that you went back to the 70’s/80’s to try and find a counter example though.
Bo did turn down A&M. A&M wasn’t a better job though and by that point, Bo had it made running the Michigan program. It isn’t just money.

Good point. This has absolutely killed us with our last two defensive coordinators. Gotta stop hiring guys who are amazing at their job and want to go to the NFL eventually.

Yep. And if you're a program like Michigan and the NFL doesn't want at least some of your guys, you probably have some of the wrong guys. Plus, all of the best players are using Michigan as a stepping stone to the NFL....

We run an NFL style defense though, especially in coverage. An NFL secondaries coach is kinda exactly what we want though.

It's always better to hire coaches with zero drive or motivation to improve, its a recipe for success, see Don Brown/Greg Mattison. He should only hire washed up retreads who will never leave because nobody wants them.

Insiders weren’t wrong though. He was offered and accepted the job. That’s being reported by NFL guys as well. But he changed his mind today.

It was a step up in that he’s just a safeties coach right now and he’d be coaching corners and safeties here. Doesn’t seem like much but it’s a resume booster and Michigan likely offered a pay raise as well.

Yes, agree. People get offered a job to leave. The team/company may decide to counter because they want to keep you. If you like the company and the $$ and the counter offered, and like the location or don't want to move, you change your mind and stay. . The Texans have a good, young team. Adegoke seemed like a very good choice. Sounds like we have another good option, let's get it done.

Seriously. It will work out. This guy is/was good; there are other good guys. Sherrone took a big swing at an NFL guy and came quite close; now focus on college guys.

Not sure I get the confusion. He has spent his last two years in the NFL (49ers 2022 as an analyst; Texans safety coach in 2023), which of course means his current (and apparently future) job is in the NFL. That's an NFL person.
