They were about as close to 8-4 as 4-8. They were incredibly unlucky and were still ranked in the top 30 of S&P. But Kelly did do a great job of keeping his players bought in and replacing a horrible DC.

Kelly also brought in Memphis's OC this past off-season, even though he only had one year of experience as an OC. The guy is also supposed to be an excellent recruiter. Wish we would be thinking like that, instead of going the NFL route (Hamilton).

I'm not saying that he hasn't helped, but everyone on their OL save for their RT is a senior, their RB is a junior, their best receiver is a junior, their TE is a senior and they got more mobile at the QB position. I think that they were so unlucky last year that it's hard to say whether the improved offense isn't just the fact that everyone got older and they returned an entire really good OL. They don't throw the ball much. Their runs are pretty simple. They just have a dominant OL and RB. That can do a ton for your team.

Attended both UM and ND....supposedly Kelly made it a huge effort to get away from kind of ministerial things (interacting with admin, the u, donors) to get back to coaching and really knowing the players. I think he has some sort of leadership group he regularly meets with, which I think is some key to the success they are having. Kelly and his players are totally on the same page.

We'll be ranked next week when we cruise past Minnesota and MSU gets whooped by Penn State.

They've been absolutely dominant all season. Close game vs ND but @ ND.

Their D is ferocious (led by major UM target Roquan Smith) and their 4th string running back would start on most teams. They're a middle-class man's Alabama. I don't think they can beat Bama outside of Athens, but they beat Notre Dame in their freshman QB's first ever game in South Bend, so I think they deserve to be ranked above Bama for now.

Whereas Alabama is a lower-class man's Alabama.

There's too much of a cluster for us to get back into the playoff if we won out (which, this hypothetical is about 3% probability), but 10-2 would certainly put us in the top 10 and back in an NY6 bowl, which would be amazing given how 30% of the fan base felt after Penn State.

It's obvious to more than just me and I can't help but wonder how you have any positive numbers. Do you want to fess up now or do you like thinking you are fooling everyone?

Yeah, I can see MSU finishing 8-4.

FWIW,
Out of every Power 5 conference team that has 2 or fewer losses, only three are unranked in the initial CFP poll.
- Kentucky
- South Carolina
You can probably guess the third.

Regardless of what happens, I'm going to enjoy the rest of Michigan's season. Too few games left before we go into another long offseason.
On an unrelated note, I really really miss making 3-9 and 4-8 jokes.

The love for the Pac-12? Yeah, they sure showed a ton of love by ranking the top Pac-12 team at No. 12. The Big Ten and Big 12 all have three teams ranked above the best Pac-12 team, the ACC has 2.5 (ND gets a half), and the SEC has two.
But yeah...lots of love for the Pac-12.

The amount of respect the SEC still gets is unreal. LSU at 19 is an absolute joke if you're going to leave Michigan unranked.
