‘25 CB commit Chris Ewald decommitts

Exactly.

Having Harbaugh is a huge help with the transfer portal. Having Harbaugh kind of screws us with recruiting high school kids. Both are true and the latter deserves to be criticized. I want Jim to coach till the day the good lord comes to A2 and takes him off to the big game in the sky. But, either go or don’t! I don’t know the ins and outs of the contract “show me love” BS. But I know it’s detrimental to the kids who committed and wanna play for Jim. So if the chargers are where he wants to be, I’ll thank him for all he gave the university and especially this year.

Ding...ding...ding...!
January 15th, 2024 at 7:39 PM ^
This is why I'm not stressing at all about it. Even if he returns this will not stop. Ever. No wording in a contract will get him to openly state that, no, he has zero interest in an NFL job. Every year he is at Michigan will end with him vaguely stating his desire to stay or go or feel wanted and this will happen.
If he leaves, I thank him for his time and the National Championship. If he stays, he stays but I'll get ready to do this all over again next year.
Recruiting still isn't entirely about money and the negative recruiting attack on Jim leaving for The NFL works. It works. Michigan had lost kids due to their believing he wouldn't stick around. Jim's own actions don't help alleviate that.
It's very easy to say "I'm not interested". He won't say it because he is interested. So don't fret because stay or go the 2024 UM team will be very different than 2023. Even if he comes back a bunch of staff and players will be different. If he goes? Slightly more different. Don't stress about it and enjoy being THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.

This is why I'm not stressing at all about it. Even if he returns this will not stop. Ever
And? We're 40-3 the last three years, with three B1G titles and a national championship.
The idea that you'd let arguably our best coach in school history leave just because he causes you a little stress in the offseason is crazy. Do you remember where this program was before Jim?
January 15th, 2024 at 8:09 PM ^
Don't want Harbaugh to leave, but it is not "a little stress" he is causing the fans, he is causing this to the University, AD (possibly), players and recruits who are either commits or heavy leans on Michigan.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:37 PM ^
This is some whiny-ass crap.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:10 PM ^
His desire to explore NFL options certainly has significant negative impact on recruiting during a time when we should be capitalizing coming off of a national championship. That's undeniable.
No one in their right mind is saying let him walk, but in terms of recruiting, his NFL talk in the past three years has hurt the program.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:41 PM ^
LMAOOOOOOOOOO at you and this pitiful take. "Hurt the program"? Are fucking serious?
We just went 15-0 and won the national championship. All with players and coaches who stuck around and went through Harbaugh interviewing with the NFL multiple times.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:46 PM ^
In terms of recruiting, yes.
What's your counter?
January 15th, 2024 at 10:36 PM ^
People have been lamenting Michigan's recruiting for years, and it was held up as the primary reason Michigan could not and would not compete with Ohio State and/or for a national championship.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:22 PM ^
It's incredible the way people take for granted what Harbaugh brings to the table. You want good recruiting? Brady Hoke's vaunted 2012 and 2013 classes were ranked #6 and #4 in the country, respectively. Lotta good it did him.
In the transfer portal era, recruiting matters a lot less anyway. IDGAF how Harbaugh gets his players. The guys who come here end up winners.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:39 PM ^
Yes and you're entirely missing the point of the post.
Your (everyone's) collective worrying isn't gonna change anything. Further, if he returns it won't stop. That's not a "so, let him leave then" post. It's fact. If he wants to leave and gets the right offer he will. If not, he won't and this will happen again next year. Deal with it and enjoy being a national champ.
January 15th, 2024 at 7:52 PM ^
No wording in a contract will get him to openly state that, no, he has zero interest in an NFL job. Every year he is at Michigan will end with him vaguely stating his desire to stay or go or feel wanted and this will happen.
100M buyout. That aligns with his promise and shows commitment. And let's see NFL teams work with that.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:40 PM ^
Oh, you mean a deal he will never sign? Haha, ok.
How about we make it $200M! Actually, make it a $700M buyout. That will get him to sign.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:54 PM ^
Purely hypothetical.
But, a number large enough to show his commitment and at the same time, deter NFL teams from commencing talks.
I remember Harbaugh saying, "I'm here as long as Michigan wants me here." If that still holds true, embracing a provision in the contract to reflect his words shouldn't be an encumbrance.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:14 PM ^
Maybe not have some shadowy booster pulling the strings on an inept AD to undermine the incredibly successful and beloved head football coach?
January 15th, 2024 at 7:30 PM ^
He didn't want national championship sloppy seconds.
January 15th, 2024 at 7:39 PM ^
"Not sure what else Michigan could do."
Bolster their NIL. Purdue just got a top 10 CB commit in the 2025 class from Tennessee, while Michigan, coming off of a National Championship, loses one.
January 15th, 2024 at 7:44 PM ^
Yeah, I’ sure Purdue has a great NIL.🙄
That has more to do with Walter’s than NIL.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:05 PM ^
So, Walters has more of an affect on top tier recruits than Harbaugh, or possibly Moore do?
January 15th, 2024 at 8:42 PM ^
For CBs, yeah .No doubt.
January 15th, 2024 at 10:47 PM ^
Then, what is the purpose of Clinksdale in recruiting? If Walters can recruit better CBs than Moore and Harbaugh, why even put Clinksdale out there to recruit if a bad head coach is recruiting better talent at a position than a position coach from a Championship team? Didn't Clinksdale come to Michigan with a better resume than Walters?
January 15th, 2024 at 8:08 PM ^
I thought notre dame took the same approach as we did to nil. How do they sign top recruits and hold onto them while we cannot?
January 15th, 2024 at 8:17 PM ^
Let's see if that commitment sticks.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:44 PM ^
ye$ not $ure what el$e the program could offer thi$ guy.
January 15th, 2024 at 9:24 PM ^
Isn’t it obvious?
Our NIL game is for shit.
January 15th, 2024 at 7:07 PM ^
At least by rankings, it seems unlikely that the staff "cooled" on this one.

January 15th, 2024 at 7:10 PM ^
Florida kid, instability at the top at UM, NIL… variety of reasons for decommitt.
January 15th, 2024 at 7:09 PM ^
Just hope this isn't an "I have no idea who the coach will be next year" decommittment.
January 15th, 2024 at 7:44 PM ^
He committed to us last December. He’s been through the Harbaugh to NFL circus before
January 15th, 2024 at 11:11 PM ^
That would probably be a good thing because that means we have a chance to get him back once our staff is settled, whether it’s Harbaugh or Moore as Head Coach.
Others have mentioned that he just finished visiting other schools, Georgia in particular. If they are throwing big money at him and that’s the reason he decommitted, then we have no shot of getting him back.
January 15th, 2024 at 7:09 PM ^
Well that is sub optimal
January 15th, 2024 at 7:10 PM ^
2025 is a long way way.
January 15th, 2024 at 7:10 PM ^
If people don't want to come out to the Big House, nobody's gonna stop 'em.
January 15th, 2024 at 7:12 PM ^
Going to be honest, I didn't know he existed or committed. But now I'm upset that he decommitted.
January 15th, 2024 at 7:30 PM ^
He is really good. This is a pretty big loss
January 15th, 2024 at 7:43 PM ^
A damn huge loss top 100 player and a position of need. This class so far. Yikes
January 15th, 2024 at 7:12 PM ^
$miami$
January 15th, 2024 at 7:15 PM ^
And a few weeks ago I read how much he appreciated us taking him as first commit....
January 15th, 2024 at 7:28 PM ^
Literally was repeated several time by EJ Holland And Libby. How he was "so honored to be the face of the class". It was the first time I felt confident he'd stick lol.
January 15th, 2024 at 7:44 PM ^
Or how they have a love fest when EJ does his recruiting podcast and they hop on to listen? They talked a big game in being a solid commit. Oh well.
January 15th, 2024 at 7:56 PM ^
We can stick with high character players, like JJ, not guys who talk about how excited they are to be the leader of the class and then they switch their mind within three weeks.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:02 PM ^
I was thinking the same. To be fair to the kid, he was a pledge during Harbaugh’s last go around with the NFL. He’s publicly stated he was a solid commit and honored to be the face of the ‘25 class lol. Seems like all talk.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:45 PM ^
Well, maybe kids want to be sure that the head coach will be there. This has hurt us every year in recruiting. Now you toss in our inability to compete in the NIL arena this makes it sledding up hill. I’ve already stated that I’m fine with Jim leaving because he has earned it but at some point something has to give.
January 15th, 2024 at 9:44 PM ^
Why based off today do you think it’s because Harbaugh is flirting with the NFL? The kid committed early before this dance happened in ‘23. Will Johnson went on a podcast saying he knows what JJ and Harbs were doing? Ironically, you don’t think it’s coincidental that he decommitted after visiting very pro NIL schools? Could Harbaugh have a reason for his decommit? Sure, who knows. To me, it seems like more NIL issues/negative recruiting given the conviction he had this last year
January 16th, 2024 at 2:55 AM ^
Absolutely has to do with very pro NIL schools. I agree 100% on that. But also JH leaving or flirting only makes it worse in my opinion.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:55 PM ^
Why are you such a dbag all the time? Who are you to impugn the character of someone because they decide a different school is a better fit for them?
January 16th, 2024 at 8:28 AM ^
Ewald was so vocally Michigan on social media while his actions and frequent visits told a different story. He hid it well
January 15th, 2024 at 7:17 PM ^
Florida kid who watched our national championship celebration. I just knew that a parade in Ann Arbor in January was a bad idea.
p.s. just kidding, it was absolutely awesome!!!
