Sponsor note. Trivia time! Leaderboard is here. Congrats to AdamW and BenT for leading the way with 22 each. Round 3 is here. Complete by 5 PM Friday to make the leaderboard.

Jake Butt and Blake Corum_Digital Event_option1

If you've participated in rounds one or two you're invited to an Autograph event with Jake Butt and Blake Corum on Sunday, September 10 at 12pm ET. This event is a live documentary experience going into the story of Blake’s childhood, his journey to Ann Arbor, his experience as a Michigan Wolverine, and his expectations for the 2023 season. There will also be a Q&A portion for VIP Pass holders. Details of the three levels:

  • Stadium Pass: Join the event for a private hangout with Blake and Jake.
  • Field Pass: Stadium Pass + you will be invited to stay on after the show with 20 fans for a special post experience with Blake.
  • Locker Room Pass: Field Pass + you will get the opportunity to interact with Blake and Jake and ask a question during the hangout.

It's an opportunity to provide some NIL and ask Blake Corum whatever you need to get off your chest. Don't be weird. If you are weird we will disavow you.

For everyone else, get in the game by playing the trivia. This is how we point the money cannon.

"Stanford? Never heard of it." Any questions about whether Michigan's transfer process is insane or not have been definitively answered. Myles Hinton:

“Right now I’m in General Studies because the credits kind of messed up. I was Human Biology at Stanford. And then, for some reason, they didn’t take a lot of the credits,” Hinton said on Monday. “All my bio credits just dropped. I don't know. It's crazy.”

A reporter replied with the question everyone in the room was thinking: Michigan really didn’t accept credits from Stanford?

“I was like, ‘What in the world?’ I took an intro writing class last semester, and I was like, ‘What’s going on? What’s going on? I took this class freshman year.’ It was crazy,” Hinton explained.

Alejandro Zuniga speculates about why that may be the case, bolding this section of the admissions rules:

Additionally, departmental credit cannot be used to satisfy distribution requirements or major/minor requirements without the permission of an academic or major advisor within the school/college.

This means if you transfer into Michigan all of your non-major classes are garbage and have to be retaken, resulting in a senior transferring in from Stanford re-taking an intro to writing class. So the score here:

  • If you have a degree from anywhere, even Michigan State, you can pop on over into a grad program no problem.
  • If you're a first-year transfer you can make it work because you haven't taken enough college credits to start capping out. So Michigan can bring in Ernest Hausmann without much difficulty.
  • Second and especially third-year players are likely to get Terrance Shannon'd if they can't slog through the rest of their degree over the summer.

This goes beyond sports at this point and is another symptom of a sclerotic bureaucracy at Michigan that seems unassailable at this point. AAPS and Michigan are Spidermans Pointing at this point.

[After THE JUMP: …but fast!]

Still fast. If you were wondering about Corum losing a step, nope:

This is on par with the top speeds in the NFL a year ago and likely means Corum is going to be a 4.3 or 4.4 guy at the combine. Meanwhile, the fastest man in the NFL last year? Kenneth Walker. Mel-without-Walker just keeps looking worse.

Lukewarm take. My hot take on the podcast this week is that Ohio State had the fifth-best QB in the league. First week PFF grading suggests that's optimistic?!

Chances that holds are 0.0%—Indiana looks like a real-ish defense and others on this list played nobodies—but I'm honestly surprised McCord finished that low. I felt he was at least on par with [checks notes]… "Brendan Sorsby." Who is apparently Indiana's QB. Line against OSU: 8/16 for 58 yards.

Yeah, maybe check back on that one in four weeks. Kyle McCord is going to move up, but it seems like OSU's rein as the conference's undisputed quarterback-haver is likely to end this year.

Klatt sees it. Joel Klatt on OSU:

“And now I don’t know where they’re going to go from this. I would assume that they’re going to try to continue to allow Kyle McCord every opportunity to go win this job. He did not play very well. Watching that tape, there were throws to be had against Indiana that he did not make. Now they would have been difficult at times, but he didn’t make them. There were three in particular, where I’m watching the play progress and I’m thinking to myself — I’m always kind of keeping the clock in my head and I’m like, ‘Ball out!’ and he’s holding the ball and I’m like, that’s a problem. That’s a problem.

Who wants to re-legislate the end of the Hoke era? This week's edition of the Monday Morning QB on WTKA with Devin Gardner was a doozy.

In the break, Sam told Gardner about the Cade McNamara article that popped up on FOX Sports last week. The article is fascinating because it seems mostly like a McNamara puff piece based on a lot of access to McNamara and his family and then it just casually drops in stuff like this:

"And Cade, honestly, was a huge part of how cutthroat that room was," the source said. "It kind of fits with his personality of when J.J. first got there, he reached out to [McNamara], ‘Hey, can't wait to learn from you,' typical stuff that would be smart stuff to say to somebody when you're coming into that situation. And Cade ghosted him, wouldn't respond to him."

And this!

Gary McNamara wanted his son to leave Michigan after the semifinal loss to Georgia in 2021. The family never discussed the idea of McNamara declaring for the NFL Draft, where he might have been a late-round pick, but conversations about entering the transfer portal were had.

McNamara didn't leave before McCarthy beat him out but more or less as soon as he did he left the team, got surgery, and never returned.

Anyway, Gardner responds to this by saying "that's public now?" as if he has been sitting on this information for months and now finally gets to discuss it. He does this by way of relating his personal experience as Michigan's quarterback when he was yanked for Shane Morris in the infamous game that would be the beginning of the end for both Brady Hoke and Dave Brandon. I have decided to not use a ton of ALL CAPS and exclamation points:

"The team didn't know through the week that I wasn't starting. … When he trotted out on game day it was like "what? What's going on?" I got a black hat on, I'm doing signals, I'm the dummy signaler … how the mighty have fallen, right? I've thrown for many, many yards and now I'm the dummy signaler for a guy who's about to throw for 49 yards in an entire football game. …

It's a hard thing to do. I'm telling you, I was hot. I was hot, and you know me… you know how I get. I wanted to fight everybody in that building.  I said "man, you brought me in this office a week ago and you told me "he just wanna party, he don't know the offense" and now you gonna tell me he gonna take my job? You are out of your mind. Not to mention, you know we can't block nobody and and you know that I'm in here trying to do everything I can to make this thing work. I was hot!

And you know what, I was like… it's all good, baby."

He would go on to decry Hoke's decision to not have captains that year.

Nice to be able to look on that with some ironic detachment these days.

Etc: This is old but I forgot to link it: Ben Herbert profiled. DUCK GANG. Will Johnson and Rod Moore both practiced yesterday, on the verge of a return. Wagners on the loose. Kirk Campbell wants you to play on Sundays.

I'll admit I was never in favor of him becoming, and subsequently staying, Michigan's coach. The 2013 Akron and UConn games annoyed me to no end, and the Penn State game a few weeks later broke me. I yelled at my TV harder than I ever had before, or have sice. After that I could muster no emotion about a Michigan game again until 2014 Minnesota.

Honestly the cracks were there by the 2011 MSU loss when it was clear he was going to go full Neanderthal Football even if it cost us a B1G title because shotgun snaps are for commies.

30 for 30 was my breakpoint.

One thing I do miss is the women’s football academy. Turned my mom and sister into serious fans, and I got some great signed swag out of it (they were kind enough to give me a hat and a ball signed by the entire 2012 and 2013 teams).

We were all hot. It was so ridiculous. And if I recall correctly Gardner had a superb FU drive near the end of that game.
There was absolutely no defending Hoke at that point.

Right after that Minnesota game, I recall speculating that the decision to start Morris over Gardner was not made by Hoke, but by the Athletic Director.

Not a defense of Hoke really, but things were so messed up in the Athletic Department at the time. Recall that Brandon sat down with Hoke every Sunday morning to go over the game film.

I'm not sure who is apparently snobbier about Michigan academics. Random internet guy looking down on a school 10 spots behind Michigan or our own admissions department. If you're giving grief to a guy transferring in from Stanford, your system is broken.

ak47

September 6th, 2023 at 3:05 PM ^

Then the system of every school with an admit rate below like 40% is broken because they are all the same. And it’s not even actually that ridiculous if you take the time to understand and learn it rather than just fire hot takes. You can transfer in 60 credits from washtenaw community college and enter Michigan as a junior with no issue as long as you prepared appropriately and did your homework on course equivalencies. It has nothing to do with academic snobbery which is why the “it’s Stanford” argument just shows the person making that argument has no idea what they are talking about

Care to give an explanation then rather than just say "it's nuanced?" Brian's interpretation of the rule section is that non-major credits don't transfer, which seems backwards. There's no reason to assume Stanford's "Intro to Writing" class is significantly worse than Michigan's.

I definitely understand Michigan wanting to protect the value of their degree, and that there are gen ed requirements other schools don't have that transferring students will need to complete, but equivalent non-major credits not transferring is hard to swallow.

ak47

September 6th, 2023 at 3:36 PM ^

I have no idea why that writing class didn’t transfer but Brian’s reading of that rule is wrong. If someone attends washtenaw community college and takes all classes that have been deemed equivalent (of which there is a list) they would transfer into Michigan as a junior and would be able to begin taking their major specific classes and not have to retake intro to writing, or calc 1, etc.

The whole idea that somehow this policy is bad and wrong because it shows the hubris of Michigan falls apart when you realize it’s actually much easier to transfer credits from any community college in Michigan than it is to transfer credits in from Stanford. And when you realize that you might actually take some time to understand the process and why that is and realize there actually isn’t a very easy quick fix solution and also that it’s a policy that is essentially standard at any major university who gets enough applications to reject people.

I'm an LS&A '05 grad (English). Sophomore year I dated a girl at Western and I lived In Kalamazoo for the summer. I was able to take a summer class at Western (biology) and knock out one of my required science credits. Easiest A I ever got, and it still seems crazy it transferred. That was almost 20 years ago, but it seems like the system in place is whacky if community college courses can transfer but somehow courses from a school like Stanford cannot. I'm sure it's more complicated than I realize, but come on.

Not really though. Michigan community colleges and satellite campuses have curriculums that highly align with Michigan's curriculum because they're essentially Michigan feeder schools. Michigan not accepting Stanford credits because they're not exactly the same is still absurd especially since Hinton was a Bio major, where he was likely taking pretty standard classes his first few years

I hear what you are saying, but I think there has to be some middle ground. The admissions department that handles transfers should do more to make sure credits transfer for all students. The transfer policy means that basically the two courses have to have the same course name and use the same text book, very similar syllabi, etc. That is what the community colleges do. "Here Michigan is teaching freshman writing with these assignments and these books so you will do the same thing here." The community colleges know they have to keep their cirriculums aligned. You can look at Michigan's list of approved courses. They are all called some variation of Writing 101

Stanford offers a first year writing class called The Rhetoric of Animals. That is not approved. 4 credits, students should write between 7,500 and 9,000 words in total for assignments. Is that class much less academically rigourous than English 124: The Works of Edgar Allen Poe, which Michigan offers?

With a little more effort Michigan transfer admissions could say you know what, I dont care what you read or what the essays were about. The point is that you did some writing class and got that experience.

I do think they should keep the 60 credits in residence at Michigan requirement. That is reasonable.

I was just shocked it took until p.2 of the comments for you to jump in on this topic ak!

Were you napping during the Hoke-DG portion of the thread?

I thought the most telling point you've made through 2 days of defending UM for rejecting Stanford credits was that you "have no idea why" they'd reject the Intro Writing course and make Myles retake it. Because you really don't...

Agreed. When I entered EMU for my teaching certificate in 1995 after getting my BA from Michigan in 1991, EMU rejected a large enough number of my UM credits that I had to take another two semesters' worth of classes that I had already taken at Michigan before they would let me enroll in the program.

I feel like the solution is in the details?

"Additionally, departmental credit cannot be used to satisfy distribution requirements or major/minor requirements without the permission of an academic or major advisor within the school/college."

Why not just get an academic or major advisor within the school/college to...give permission?

My daughter is a sophomore at Stanford (but remains a big Michigan football fan). According to her, chemistry and biology courses are often structured very differently there because of the quarter system, and it is known to students that getting these credit transferred are not straightforward.

The multivariable calculus class she took last year is packed with linear algebra. It is a one-quarter course, and the only one that covers either linear algebra or multivariable calculus. At most schools, there is a one-semester course for each topic. I would imagine some trouble if she would like to have these credits transferred, or qualify as pre-requisites at a different school.

Since there are probably not many undergraduate transfers from Stanford, it is understandable that the admission office have hard time deciding on those courses, but a quick meeting with the undergraduate advisors in related departments, or even a faculty member who had took those courses at Stanford themselves, should solve the problem. Having all Hinton's biology credits dropped is certainly a joke.

I saw that as well. I also saw that Devin went out of his way to say that Denard was the exact opposite — that he was Devin’s advocate even though Devin was essentially coming for his job.

I wasn’t surprised, but I was happy to hear the confirmation.

Not accepting credits from a school like Stanford is, I believe, about revenue and nothing else. How much is an out-of-state credit hour now?

We are financially wrecking young people who want to improve themselves with secondary education; punishing them and indenturing them to jobs for decades. No society looking out for its own long term best interest does that.

WestQuad

September 6th, 2023 at 3:21 PM ^

Seriously.  Forget about athletes.  I remember people who worked hard to get into Michigan from Western or community colleges and none of their stuff transferred.  I sort of get it because many CC classes are not as rigorous, but with the cost of tuition it is sort of criminal.

As an evolved society, we should have affordable/free college so that our communities are built up with smart people and that the children from our communities have an opportunity to go wherever they want.   If you're super-wealthy and want to go out of state or to a private school that's great, but I feel for all of the millennials and gen-z folk.

ak47

September 6th, 2023 at 4:12 PM ^

It has absolutely nothing to do with the academic reputation of the school credits are transferring from.

Also who cares about the cost for out of state students. The university uses those funds to make Michigan essentially free for 90 percent of Michigan residents because the state abdicated its duty in funding the school. You have a problem with out of state tuition rates and the number of out of state kids at Michigan take it up with Michigan legislators from about 1990 to 2022

Hoke was an idiot. He was an obvious idiot. Too many people defended his idiocy for far too long. Sometimes when it walks, talks, and acts like an idiot, it really is an idiot. Nice guy, I'm sure. But a fucking idiot. Almost got a couple of players killed.

The waste of Devin Gardner's talent was one of the most f'd up things in the history of Michigan football. I could cry about it to this day.

Brady Hoke can do some things well as a head coach and sometimes those things lead to mid major winning seasons. That said it sure looks to me like even at the mid major level he’s in way over his head with off field issues. Certainly at any level the DG/Shane story we heard looks terrible. While we only have Devin’s side of it, we have evidence such as no captains being named to support at least some aspects of what Devin said. It does not seem like Hoke is head coach material despite the wins and losses.

Me.  I'm to blame.  I was a Hoke supporter way too long.  He was a nice guy, sincere in his love for Michigan, ethical (seemingly), and he recruited well.  But he couldn't coach football at this level!  In addition to his treatment of Devin Gardner, he put Denard under center in a pro-style offense, didn't wear a headset on the sidelines (because he "was always told what the play was"--like that's the only reason to wear a headset), he apologized to freakin' MSU for our player spiking a stake into the turf that everybody knew was just a motivational ploy and not meant to disrespect anyone. All that in addition to the whole Shane concussion fiasco and losing more games every year he was here.  He made it embarrassing to be a Michigan fan.  Mea culpa.

He won Brian over at the end of 2011 too (one quote: "I would not want to play poker with him", and that's perfectly understandable - we were all of us deceived.  I remember Brian writing about a coaching clinic Hoke put on and how he was able to command the room.  It's not that Hoke was completely unskilled, but he was Peter Principled to the M00N and back.

I'm sure either McCord or Brown will be good to very good by season's end, and having Marvin Harrison helps a lot.  And they could be meh and still stumblefuck to 7-8 wins without even trying.  But I gotta think their ceiling will be palpably lower than last year.  We can and should meme on Stroud all day long but he was one of the best QBs in recent CFN history as laserimg throws to open wideouts or throwing them open and it's pretty clear that McCord isn't close to that yet

RobSk

September 6th, 2023 at 3:03 PM ^

I tend to agree, but I think it's possible they won't produce a QB that is elite THIS YEAR. In fact, at some damn point, doesnt' the thing that happens to every other school ever (you recruit guys that don't quite work out immediately) have to happen to OSU?

I mean, 2012 to 2022, everybody was not just great, but great NOW.

2013 - Braxton Miller
2014 - JT Barrett
2015 - Cardale Jones (but really Barrett)
2016 -  Barrett
2017 - Barrett (with Haskins jumping in in the UM game)
2018 - Haskins
2019 - Fields
2020 - Fields
2021 - Stroud
2022 - Stroud

Not all these guys are NFL stars, but man, all of them were absurdly good absurdly fast. It's time for a "down" year, like a guy being 3rd best in the big 10, not 1st.

As the Bears accumulate actual football players on offense at positions other than running back (where their duo last year was quite good, and they're set up very well this year as well), he won't have to run as much. Most weeks last season there was exactly one actual NFL receiver on the active roster and a bunch of waiver bait. This year they have an actual number one in DJ Moore, Claypool for a whole offseason and training camp, Mooney back healthy, and all three TEs have real value. Real live NFL players in the starting lineup!

I punched my fist in the air Wednesday when the Athletic alert hit my phone that Nick Bosa had signed his contract & would suit up Sunday in Pittsburgh.

So I empathize with you feeling like you need to lobby for Justin Fields because your favorite NFL team drafted him Yinka!

I Iobbied for the Niners to draft someone other than Bosa at #2 in '19, such was my distaste for him - which would have obviously been one of the great biting off your nose moments of all time for me had they actually done that!

On the other hand, I was higher on Fields than Trey Lance tho!
