This is an excellent move (well, could be, as long as Holland doesn't screw up handling the draft picks), but it's also a sign that the Wings have given up playoff hopes despite being only five points behind Columbus.

Holland has now...2 picks in each of the first three rounds...he ought to be able to trade up to a top three pick. Hopefully that gets a true franchise talent that can start contributing quickly..

Although it worked out pretty good for Arizona when they traded up for Jakob Chychrun in exchange for eating Datsyuk's cap hit.

It's pretty sad that a brand new franchise can come in and lead their division while the freaking Detroit Red Wings can't make the playoffs. Detroit sports is not exactly raising any bars at this point in time.
February 26th, 2018 at 5:51 PM ^
is actually a lot to make up in less about 20 games. If your a Wings fan you should want to see them try to rebuild. They are not a threat to win a cup let alone a playoff series. Being last team in and first team out of the playoffs every year doesn't help you for future years. There comes a time you need to totally revamp and start new and that is where the Wings are.
I have seen my teams do the same thing, but can slowly see the progress being made and know they are getting closer all the time, instead of spinning their wheels.
February 26th, 2018 at 7:16 PM ^
The Wings have 62 points with 20 games to play. They need to reach at least 90 points to even have any chance of sneaking into the playoffs. That means they would need to go something like 13-5-2 to finish the season. With this team averaging 1 point per game and playing 9 out of the next 10 on the road, I don't see that happening. They really blew a golden opportunity to get back in the race during the last couple of weeks by leaving points on the table (losing with 0.2 seconds left, blowing a 3 goal lead, etc.) while NYI, NYR, Carolina and CBJ have been struggling. Of course if they do somehow manage to sneak in as the #8 seed, Tampa will run them out in 4 straight any way. Time to play the kids, get them some game experience and maneuver for the best draft pick possible (with some luck).
February 26th, 2018 at 6:11 PM ^
Good. Making the playoffs is irrelevant to just go down in round 1. Tampa will obliterate this team. Doing whatever it takes to squeak in is partially what's responsible for the current mess they are in.

Now don't screw up with the picks or the cap space.
Nice to see Kenny is not a buyer being only 5 points out.

Also, he reportedly only waived his NTC for Washington and Tampa. Didn't really do Kenny any favors.

They now say he was open to any trade, likely to only contenders but was open. I believe they didn't want to trade him for less when they could just resign him and get similar return. (which is stupid)

I always had high hopes for Tatar to be a top line or very solid 2nd line player but always seemed to just be off of that true break out. Hopefully Vegas brings out his full potential and hopefully we turn the 1st round pick into a great player for a quick turn around. But I will also like to see more of the youth brung up since they have been doing a solid job in the chances they have gotten.
February 26th, 2018 at 6:17 PM ^
Can't believe they got picks and cleared a ton of cap space at the same time.
Unlike Delaney - Holland is really good at his job.
February 26th, 2018 at 6:22 PM ^
In this case, he did well. In many others, not so much. DeKeyser is making 5M per year. There are numerous gaffes of late, but props to Ken on this one.

argue with that. And with a great username like Charlestown Chiefs - why would I want to?

Too Bad Green got hurt; he woudl likely have landed another second-rounder+ and now they get nothing. But lots of picks in next two drafts, so Holland needs to deliver.
February 26th, 2018 at 7:18 PM ^
being vegas has the best record (or right there) in a year that the west is not that strong, the picks are going to be at the very end of the round. The talent in this years draft is deep, but any taken outside of the top 10 are going to be developmental players. If the Wings can get their own 1rst round pick up in the top 5, then we really win on this. I see Dahlin as a organizational changer for whoever lands him. Svechnikov, Zadina, and Tkachuk will likely be in the NHL next year, but everyone else I watch that is projected first round will likely need some more time to develop before they make it to the show. Of course there will be a few that really make a jump before draft day.
I see zero chance for the wings moving up in the first round tho. Only way any team would even consider trading a top 5 pick is with a young stud and draft picks. I think the only player the wings have that would fit that is Mantha, and we should not ever let him go IMO.
I do give this deal a B+/A-, but think its going to take 3 or 4 years to see it make a real impact for us. I also really would have liked to see us dump more salary with players like Abs, Howard, Nyquist, but there probably was just not enough interest in any of these. Maybe we can pursue some more trades in the offseason, as I would like to see us still pile up a few more draft picks. We simply have to many big contracts with players that are not going to make it thru this rebuild.
And my real take from today, is WTF did we ever let Stevie Y slip away? That guy showed again today that he is the best GM in the league. Dammit Holland! Just blow it up and get us some young talent!
February 27th, 2018 at 4:44 AM ^
Franchise altering fuck you from Holland. Before Yzerman took the Tampa job the Wings wanted Holland to move up leaving the GM spot open for Yzerman. Holland said no and Yzerman left. I hate that Holland is our GM. One bad contract after another, one overpay after another. We pay top dollar for dime a dozen guys like Abbie and Helm and Dekeyser. And then further cripple ourselves with aging veterans with little to offer a team that obviously has needed to rebuild for the last 5 years. Fuck Holland.

Vegas is an incredible story, gonna be rooting for them in the playoffs. Seems like a pretty good fit for Tatar - he is more of a second-third line contributor than the first line guy the Wings originally expected him to be

He's already got three wins and the Flyers are on top of their division. Unless they collapse spectacularly or Mrazek gets hurt, the 4th is easily going to become a 3rd. That was always a very easy condition to meet. Next, they need to win two playoff series with Mrazek in net.
February 27th, 2018 at 10:42 AM ^
The way it is going with Petr, I could see the Flyers making a deep run and re-signing him next year. Wish they traded Howard instead.
February 26th, 2018 at 11:29 PM ^
Worth noting that the 2nd-round pick we get from Vegas next year is actually the Islanders' pick that they traded to VGK last summer. The Islanders are already pretty bad and that pick is in the upper half of the draft rather than next-to-last (if the pick were this year.) If and when they lose Tavares this coming offseason, they're going straight into the crapper and the pick will likely be close to the first round.
Solid maneuvering by Kenny on this one. Wish he would've been able to pull the trigger on some more trades, but the one he did make looks good. I still think Tatar is a prime candidate to blossom big-time under different coaching, though.
February 27th, 2018 at 7:17 AM ^
Was that Yzerman had his deal with the Rangers in place for some time and kept the Wings and Senators engaged in trade talks about Green/Karlsson so that Tampa's competitors had little room/time to trade for one of them. Not sure how true it is, but it's pretty savvy if true. Either way, moving Tatar hurts, but you cannot argue with what they got. Still baffled on how they didn't trade Green.

Quite ok with this move. Thought it might end up being Zetterburg but i don't think they would have gotten as much with him being long in the tooth.
