More B1G award announcements
All on twitter but some results:
DL of the Year - Nick Bosa
RB and Offensive Player of the Year - Saquon Barkley
Defensive Player of the Year - Josey Jewel
Coach of the Year - Paul Chryst
Bosa winning DL of the Year is a complete joke. From Orion Sang on Twitter:
Bosa: 28 tackles, 12.5 TFL, 6 sacks
Winovich: 74 tackles, 17 TFL, 8 sacks
Gary: 62 tackles, 11 TFL, 5 sacks
Hurst: 59 tackles, 13.5 TFL, 5 sacks

sketchy.
Barkley is iffy too. I thought Jon Taylor from Wisc was a better back. He just didn't get all the hype.
November 30th, 2017 at 1:05 PM ^
Completely disagree here. Taylor has great stats, but he also has a very good offensive line. Penn State's OL is absolute garbage. Barkley generates those yards himself. From watching him play, I think Barkley is probably the best back in the country.
November 30th, 2017 at 1:42 PM ^
Is the reason we all have opinions, but I also think Jonathon Taylor is the best back in the B1G. Don't hold a good line against him. Mike Hart had some great offensive lines also, but that doesn't diminish how good he was. The Bosa thing is a bigger joke. Who voted on this?
November 30th, 2017 at 12:31 PM ^
We had 3 DL more deserving than Bosa. Hell, OSU may have had DL that were more deserving. I agree that he is supremely talented, but so are Hurst, Winovich, and Gary, and they are actual starters. SMH.
November 30th, 2017 at 12:32 PM ^
Bosa is completely overrated. Mo Hurst was the DL of the year and will be a top 10 pick.
Once again Michigan is screwed by the B1G.
They really hate Harbaugh don't they?
November 30th, 2017 at 12:47 PM ^
Do you really think Hurst will go top 10? I have seen mockups that have him quite a bit lower.
November 30th, 2017 at 1:18 PM ^
latest projections have him top 15
November 30th, 2017 at 2:29 PM ^
Yes. Around 10. If he slides it won't be but to 15 or so at worst.

when sport writers hand out awards. These awards tend to be popularity contests. They don't look any further than the names. They are too busy to look at stats and haven't followed all these players through the season, so "I know that name and I heard he was good" carries the day.
November 30th, 2017 at 1:14 PM ^
The coaches aren't much better.

I heard D'antonio was going to get Coach of the Year, but the voters couldn't find his last name on the ballot.

It's not criminal, and not even figuratively. It is, as Bambi says, a joke. It's an award, and most awards are iffy. Hurst can cry about missing out when the NFL team he signs with delivers the mattress of cash for him to sleep on.
I mean, yeah, he got robbed, but I'd rather have corrupt idiots in charge of handing out gold stars than. . . say. . . officiating B1G games. Well, crap.
November 30th, 2017 at 12:36 PM ^
Steve Pallazolo from PFF is on with Jason Horowitz and Kanell each week. I could be wrong, but I think he may have said that Bosa was grading out higher than anyone in the country. The stats are certainly in favor of our boys though.
Did the Rutgers punter win based on "number" of punts?
November 30th, 2017 at 12:46 PM ^
I don't have the numbers at my fingertips, but most weeks PFF had been grading Mo as the best player (not just defensive lineman) in the country. It feels like the 3 Michigan linemen may have split votes. Regardless, anyone who paid any attention knows that Maurice Hurst was the best this year, hands down.
November 30th, 2017 at 1:39 PM ^
I don't disagree that Hurst has been and is the best DL in the country.
November 30th, 2017 at 12:37 PM ^
Cue the Blink 182 gif.
November 30th, 2017 at 12:39 PM ^
Don't you have to be a starter to win a conference award? Bosa officially is a reserve.
November 30th, 2017 at 12:45 PM ^
Congratulations to a guy that would be 3rd or 4th on Michigan's depth chart.

I can go either way on Peppers. I feel like he had a better argument than Bosa does. Michigan literally has 2 (maybe 3) DL with better stats than him. I don't even think OSU fans would be upset if Hurst won it.
November 30th, 2017 at 12:47 PM ^
HAHA at Nick Bosa. His game log looks supremely underwhelming, especially when most of his sacks came against bad competition (Maryland, UNLV, and Indiana). Hurst and Winovich didn't disappear like he did.
Oh well, I am sure even him and OSU fans know that was a fraud.
November 30th, 2017 at 12:59 PM ^
Nope, you'd think so but, OSU fans think he earned it and are talking back to back. No idea how he won this award and doesn't even start.
November 30th, 2017 at 1:21 PM ^
Seems to me like his brother won it for him.
If his last name is Smith, he doesn't win it.

not deserving of a full time player award
November 30th, 2017 at 12:55 PM ^
If anyone cares about PFF, here are their overall grades:
Bosa: 52.9
Winovich: 38.9
Gary: 19.8
Hurst: 76.2 (!)
Unless I missed someone, Hurst is the highest graded player at any position. Baker Mayfield is next at 60.3
PFF isn't the bible or anything but damn...
November 30th, 2017 at 1:25 PM ^
well Gary having that low of a PFF is shocking...
must be he is missing assignments... not in his lane
November 30th, 2017 at 1:39 PM ^
For context, Gary's rating puts him at 27th in the country among "edge defenders". Among 4-3 DEs he's 16th in the country.
Not super elite, but still pretty dang good for a sophomore.
November 30th, 2017 at 2:18 PM ^
I'm not an expert in this area, but aren't PFF grades out of 100, and didn't Maurice Hurst have a 96.8 grade going into the OSU game, while Winovich had a 87.6 grade, and a number of OSU's players were in the 80s? And doesn't Baker Mayfield have a grade in the mid-90s, right around Hurst's grade?
I'm sorry if the mistake is on my end, but the chart I'm looking at doesn't show anything like the numbers you are presenting. Overall, your claim that Hurst is the highest rated defender is correct, but the gap doesn't seem to be on the order of magnitude that is suggested above. Just seeking clarification.
November 30th, 2017 at 12:55 PM ^
and Jeff Brohm both got robbed.
November 30th, 2017 at 2:00 PM ^
That's just lazy voting. Chryst wins the weakest division in CFB. Plays one ranked team (at the time). It's not like Wisc wasn't expected to win that division going away with that squad.
Hate to say it but D'Antonino has a strong case too given last year, returning experience and off-season shenanigans.
November 30th, 2017 at 5:16 PM ^
I'd argue for all of Dantonio, Brohm, Meyer, and Fitzgerald ahead of Chryst. 12-0 is nice. But the team is very talented and they played nobody very elite and had no occasions where they really faced adversity (or had to bounce back from adversity).
Beat Ohio State, of course, and that all changes. But that's an argument for doing all this voting after Championship weekend.

Good call on Fitz. They put together the quietest 9-3 season I've seen in a long time. After losing to Duke they were left for dead but ran through the dregs of the West (WI excepted) without much notice.

Bosa did not deserve the award.
However, this is due to his lack of playing time, not lack of talent or lack of production when he was in the game. He's playing behind two first-day NFL draft picks, and DE is a position where you really want to keep your players fresh, so he only plays about half the snaps.
This should keep him from winning the award, and I don't understand why it didn't. But saying that he doesn't deserve it because he's not as good as Hurst or other players, or that he just gets attention because of his name, is ridiculous. He is a great player and had a great season; it just shouldn't have netted him this award.
November 30th, 2017 at 1:23 PM ^
he is a good player... not GREAT like Mo !
this is popularity contest and Bosa has the family name.. big diva..
we'll see who gets drafted higher and who has the more successful NFL career....
hint: Mo !!

Anyone who voted against Hurst should be stripped of their right to vote. This is simply insane, he is the BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY according to PFF. This is lunacy.
