OT: Zingerman’s makes doughnuts on the weekends? They are spectacular
I assume this is not well known? Only avail at their Bakehouse location by the airport and Costco. Sunday morning they had a chocolate glazed yeast doughnut and a sweet ricotta-filled doughnut. I’m not really a donut guy but they were both easily the best I’ve ever had. 10 out of 10.
zippermans...
just guessing, but $5/$6 per doughnut at least given that it's the big Z
(my algorithm: take a reasonable but "high" price, then double it -> Zingerman's price)
Thank goodness Zingerman's did not come out with its donuts during Bill Martin's tenure as AD, as I am certain he would have devised a strategy of giving everybody a free football ticket to our games for every donut purchased.
I'm sorry. I stand corrected. I believe I should have referenced Dave Brandon and not Bill Martin regarding ticket giveaways.
Why is Bill catching strays here?
Didn't realize it was possible for a Michigan fan to get those two confused.
Hey man, you gotta give me a break. Had PTSD from those years and needed to suppress memories of those years in order to survive.
So you're different from the rest of the Michigan fanbase. Okay...
NO BREAK FOR YOU!!!
Nope, they were only like $2 each!
That's not awful. My wife has gone back to work and I've taken up some shopping. 6 bagels in a bag at Wegman's is $6.50. Go to Aldi's and you can get a bag of 6 for $1.95.
I've reached the age where I tell people how much gas cost when I was young.
You're probably of the mind that Jimmy John's mystery meat is better than Zingerman's Corned Beef Reuben because you can get two of theirs for the price of one at Zingerman's.
Zingermans is vastly overrated and there are much better delis in metro Detroit.
Names
I don't know if you can compare Zingerman's to other delis. Zingerman's sort of reinvented the deli, giving each sandwich a personality of its own, rather than just doing a traditional pastrami or corned beef. If you like the more straightforward traditional sandwiches, I could see thinking that Zingerman's is overpriced and not all that.
DJ's Bakery has the best donuts I've had in AA.
Skip the exorbitant pricing of Z and go to DJ's, they are awesome. Also great muffins and brownies.
Also family and locally owned.
Yep, DJ’s is amazing. And you’re helping support a mom & pop business of a family who immigrated fleeing from Cambodia during the Cambodian-Vietnamese War; it’s a win-win where you get to save money compared to Zingermans and DJ’s could use your money a lot more than Zingermans could. They’ve got some Asian inspired parts of their menu as well with Vietnamese iced coffee and Thai iced coffee.
I'm not familiar with what all is available up there now (other than having to get cinnamon donuts from the Dexter cider mill when I go up to AA every year) but I was about to say that Cambodian donuts are the way to go and they're all over the country. Even my Viet family doesn't object.
Between the Dexter Bakery, the drive-in A & W, Dairy Queen, and in football season the Dexter Cider Mill one can get all the fine culinary cuisine in a few square blocks.
If cost were not part of the equation, would DJ's have the better product?
Zingermans also makes crullers and they are the best I have ever tasted. I think they were $4.
How about HELLZ YES!!! There stuff is so fresh and yummy!
I'm partial to Dimo's, but DJ's is good too. IIRC, think DJ's is basically the same recipe as Dexter Bakery as DJ's is owned by the former Dexter Bakery owners.
Thirded
No way they are better than Donut Mill
iykyk
Is Donut Mill in A2? No.
Never been to that. But the one in Battle Creek is #1 and the one in Kalamazoo is #2.
Not sure why I got negged, sweetwaters donut mill has been regularly ranked as the best in the state and regularly makes national rankings as well
Eh. They're okay. I know two tiny little bakeries that are far, far superior though.
Sweetwater's Donut Mill is the best in the state, and probably 1/5 the price. Those that know, know.....
Yup. I mentioned them above
Donna's Donuts in Flint.
If you know, you know.
best strip club in Michigan
I'm a die hard donut person. The donuts I measure all others against are in NY at a place called The Doughnut Plant. My favorite is a sourdoughnut (made with sourdough starter) and they come in different flavors. The dark chocolate is my fave. It's less sweet than traditional donuts, with a little chew, and it's somehow vegan, which isn't a selling point for me, but it is kind of amazing that no butter or eggs are used. I've been going to this place for around 25 years and have tried most of their flavors. I'm sure Zingerman's has great donuts, too, just felt the need to plug my favorite place. There's also one in Brooklyn.

I’ve been to Doughnut Plant a few times. Honestly, I think Zingerman’s may have been better. They were so fresh and good. And only like two bucks each.
Next time I’m in AA, I’ll definitely try them.
Someone guide me to good doughnuts in the Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills area
You don't know about Daily Dozen or Donut Cutter?!
Just moved here
Avon Donuts in Pontiac is great. Donut Cutter too. I don’t think I’ve been to the other place. If you’re willing to trek down Woodward to Palmer Woods, Dutch Girl Donuts is reopening under new ownership. Donut Bar in Southfield is just ok. A little decadent and too done up for donuts if you ask me. Duck Donuts in Troy is great and not a bad drive from you. Also, the kosher bakery on 13 and Southfield has good donuts. I’m blanking on the name.
Thank you!
Bake Station! But alas they closed. I miss having easy access to their seven layer cake.
"I’m not really a donut guy..."
You should be ashamed; deeply ashamed.
Seriously donuts are not that good, IMO. A real homemade old school chocolate donut is truly something to behold but even then I would not want more than one for a while.
Here's a good one: the Brooklyn Blackout donut. Chocolate cake donut, filled with dark chocolate pudding, glazed in dark chocolate, and then rolled in chocolate cake crumbs. It's really more of a dessert.
ALL of Zingerman's Bakehouse goods are phenomenal. Try the Obama Bun if you like sticky buns. Cinnamon Raisin bread is terrific, Lemon Cloud, Blondie, etc, etc.
Mmmmmmmmmm. Yeast.
But are they real?
Little known Canadian joint down the road called Tim Horton's makes these little balls called bits. They are tasty. I like the blueberry.
I believe you can get them weekend mornings at the Roadhouse too, and a lot of their desserts are built around their donuts. With that said, I think serve 1 kind of donut there (traditional, maybe with sugar coating.. Can't remember).
Donut Sundae/Donut Friday with the ice cream and the peanuts. So delicious. Overpriced, yes, but delicious.
They've been around for several years. I believe they date back to the Before Times (pre-pandemic). The ricotta filled is my favorite.
