Michigan is expected to name Kirk Campbell as its new offensive coordinator
Michigan is expected to name Kirk Campbell as its new offensive coordinator, sources tell @247sports
Campbell was Michigan’s QB coach in 2023 and helped JJ McCarthy emerge as a potential first-round pick. Was also interim OC for the team’s win over ECU.

Love it

Probably best case for continuity, plus QBs/players seem to like him. I hope they promote Hart to like “run game coordinator” if Hart is feeling passed over to keep him involved and appreciated. Time to find a DC, TE, S, LB, and ST coach!
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:31 PM ^
Hart is already Run Game Coordinator. There have been rumors he would leave to take a lower-level OC and HC job elsewhere if passed over for OC here.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:36 PM ^
Honestly I wouldn't blame him. He clearly wants to ascend to being a head coach, and remaining a RB coach would really hinder that.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:58 PM ^
Hart also makes a half million dollars a year at Michigan. Tough to just walk away from that.
February 2nd, 2024 at 3:51 PM ^
What does OC pay at another school? OC at Indiana makes $815k/year. If Hart doesn't stay here I'd like to see him become an OC and then HC somewhere else. Maybe he can return if Moore gets NFL fever.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:38 PM ^
Maybe Hart will be promoted to co-Run Game Coordinator
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:50 PM ^
I can see Hart be a head coach somewhere but not an OC.
February 2nd, 2024 at 4:12 PM ^
Not sure how many RB coaches went straight to head coach. He'll most likely need some grooming at OC first.
February 2nd, 2024 at 1:49 PM ^
Right. Maybe keep the run game coordinator and give him an assistant head coach type of role. He has aspirations to be a HC. Hopefully Moore's success as a head coach is a cause for many years of bliss. He gets the resume builder, he can take on some shit Moore can hand down so Moore can focus on acclimating/learning the job and maybe mentoring Newsome a bit. The O line dominance is essential to how they have succeed.
February 2nd, 2024 at 2:35 PM ^
Hopefully they can give him an Assistant HC position and a salary bump - obviously he has been integral to the team's success, and is a favored son.
February 2nd, 2024 at 2:48 PM ^
As he should.
February 2nd, 2024 at 2:59 PM ^
This isn't the ideal time for Hart to leave. Nearly all OC vacancies have been filled, although Bama has one again.
This isn't based on any intel, but I predict Denard would take over RBs if Hart did leave. He's going to be too good of a recruiter to pass up.
February 2nd, 2024 at 4:02 PM ^
You could still probably throw some sort of title bump his way. Whether it's co-OC or associate head coach or something like that. Of course you may want to save a title like associate head coach for Elston in case we bring in a DC from outside (as Clinkscale already has a co-DC title).

Mike Hart is in his third season as running backs coach at the University of Michigan in 2023. He is in his second season as the program's run game coordinator.

Maybe someone will have info on this, but from what I can see Hart isn't even under contract right now. His last deal ran through 2023. Is he even officially on the staff at this time?
February 2nd, 2024 at 3:50 PM ^
Not sure how a post suggesting that Hart gets promoted to a title he's held for 2 seasons is getting upvoted. Especially considering it's been mentioned a lot of times that Hart is likely gone after not even going to the championship parade
February 2nd, 2024 at 6:45 PM ^
He said three things in that comment. Hart getting promoted was only one of them.
February 2nd, 2024 at 4:00 PM ^
Just wondering if Hart's health plays a factor in any of this. After a scare, maybe the extra stress of more responsibilities makes the job look different. No inside information, a colleague of mine had a heart attack and he had a whole different view of the work/family relationship afterwards.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:24 PM ^
During Campbell’s game as the interim OC, JJ McCarthy was 26 of 30 for 280 yards with three touchdown passes in three quarters of action. McCarthy’s completion percentage of 87 percent is a Michigan single-game record among QBs with 30 or pass attempts.
Guessing this means Mike Hart is probably gone?
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:26 PM ^
Not necessarily. We are assuming Hart is wanting to be an OC and is no longer satisfied with his role as is. He may be promoted to run game coordinator or something to help contribute.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:38 PM ^
Only reasons I can see Mike Hart wanting to keep his current position and not move up to OC at a P5 or lower-level HC would be:
1. Loves it at Michigan, doesn't want to leave (possible?)
2. His health scare in 2022 made him realize he doesn't want to take on any additional stress.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:57 PM ^
Also money! I hope he gets a big raise this year no matter his title.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:38 PM ^

He was running game coordinator last year.

but losing the -ing will make it sound more professional

Wow. The double down on a dumb comment. Nice
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:43 PM ^
Was that game against 2-10 ECU or against Penn State? I can’t remember.
February 2nd, 2024 at 2:31 PM ^
Getting negged for providing accurate context?
February 2nd, 2024 at 3:41 PM ^
Negged for the dickish delivery. I’ll take them.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:27 PM ^
I actually was expecting a co-OC setting with Campbell and Hart. I wonder what Hart will do going forward. He has expressed aspirations for more.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:38 PM ^
This seems like Hart's time to flee. I'd like to see what he could do as an OC (with the role unshared) at a place like Bowling Green or maybe as HC at a smaller school.
February 2nd, 2024 at 2:15 PM ^
Problem is he’s making half a million at Michigan. Which is significantly more than you’d make as OC at a place like Bowling Green and would be roughly on par with what you’d make as HC at a smaller school.
It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to take a pay cut for what is likely a dead end job.
February 2nd, 2024 at 3:35 PM ^
Problem is he’s making half a million at Michigan.
I think this qualifies as a first-world problem.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:28 PM ^
Loved him in growing pains. What a talent to be able to act and coach at such a high level.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:30 PM ^
This is a goofball post. I love it.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:43 PM ^
Different guy. The "Growing Pains" guy became a diehard born again Christian and he and Boner had a falling out...
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:47 PM ^
Agree to disagree.

They have pills that help for that condition

When your boner falls out it usually means you're done.

That was Glen Cameron you crazy asshole.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:28 PM ^
Okay.
February 2nd, 2024 at 3:13 PM ^
SQ, what happened to you?
You've always spoken your mind around here, but up until recently, what came with that is that you always had something insightful or noteworthy to say.
Now, you're just....not that.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:32 PM ^
Works for me- other than the goal line series where they were insisting on running Edwards up the middle to get him his touchdown, I thought the offense hummed along pretty well in that game. That said, that one blemish from that game kinda speaks to my main concern about the offense for this coming season- they need to figure out how to use Donovan Edwards more creatively and effectively. We've got a huge opportunity with him coming back, and he needs to be a featured part of the offense. I can't imagine that the staff doesn't understand that though, so I'm hopeful about it.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:41 PM ^
Totally agree. And with so many starters gone, the opportunity has to be there. This board has noted the lack of receiver depth returning, and I hope we see Donovan in the slot and/or split out VERY regularly. Mullings and Hall will be fine as RB1 and RB2, and I'm not saying Donovan can't take ANY snaps at RB - but let's put him elsewhere to get more talent on the field.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:53 PM ^
That's what I'd love to see too- put him in as a slot reciever and see what happens. I'd kinda love to know if Denard Robinson has any ideas along those lines- I'll be honest, I don't know ball well enough to say if the two guys have particularly similar skill sets, but they do have similar speed at least, and I wonder if Robinson being able to take a larger role in things would be beneficial to Edwards.
February 2nd, 2024 at 2:29 PM ^
Yeah, it feels like they could use motion with him a lot to mess with defenses. Motion him out of the backfield to the slot and vice versa, across the formation to threaten jet sweeps. There are probably other things you could do as well, but I’m pretty limited in my knowledge of ball.
February 2nd, 2024 at 1:37 PM ^
Maybe the staff has tried Edwards at other places and he just doesn't have the hands? I know he had a couple drops during the season, maybe it was uncharacteristic. I hope this isn't the case, but maybe the simple option isn't an option for a reason?
February 2nd, 2024 at 2:32 PM ^
Edwards sees himself as a running back and probably wasn’t too enthralled with the idea of moving positions, nor was it really a need.
I don’t think it does Edwards justice to call him a running back or a WR either. To be frank, I don’t think he’s good enough at RB or WR to be just one or the other. But I think he’s good enough at both that he’s borderline elite as an offensive weapon.
By that I mean I don’t think he’s a guy you can line up and run 20 times a game with. Sometimes the final stat line will look good, but the down to down success isn’t there. I know someone will bring up 2022 OSU as the counterpoint, but realize he had two huge runs and went 56 yards on his other 20 carries. You burn a lot of downs waiting for him to bust one.
I also don’t think he’s someone you just line up out wide. Matched up on a safety or corner and I think he’s a below average receiver. But if you move him all over the field you can create mismatches and get him on a linebacker. That requires using him in the run game and the pass game.
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:33 PM ^
I'm curious if he retains QB responsibility as well, or if they hire some to replace him there. My guess is he'll keep the QBs since Moore was both OC and OL.
