Moore Recruiting Potential as HC?
With Jim gone to LA, it’s expected Sherrone Moore takes over as HC. A negative of Harbaugh’s NFL saga that has been bemoaned often here was the repercussions that had on recruiting. If Sherrone is HC, he has a track record of being a great recruiter, I’d imagine we may see recruiting see an uptick (especially with that “new coach smell” most programs get when a new coach comes in). Obviously the staff has shown scouting and development to further than starz, but it’s nice to know Moore has been able to identify high level talent and recruit them to UM.
Notable Moore recruits are…
Dax Hill- Primary Recruiter
JJ McCarthy- Primary Recruiter
Donovan Edwards- Secondary Recruiter
Andrew Gentry- Primary Recruiter
Giovani El-Hadi- Primary Recruiter
AJ Henning- Primary Recruiter
Maxi Smith- Secondary Recruiter
Braiden McGregor- Primary Recruiter
Tyler Morris- Secondary Recruiter
Andrew Sprague- Primary Recruiter
Trevor Keegan- Primary Recruiter
Roman Wilson- Secondary Recruiter
Rayshaun Benny- Primary Recruiter
Semaj Morgan- Secondary Recruiter
Blake Frazier- Primary Recruiter

He flipped Dax Hill back from Alabama. How many recruiters have we had that flip Bama commits?
Other than that:
In total for the 2021 class, Moore is credited with eight commits — more than one-third of Michigan’s freshman class.
His hard work on the recruiting trail goes back to his days at Central Michigan. As the tight ends coach there, he evaluated and got a commitment from Tyler Conklin, who turned into a good college tight end and is now in the NFL playing for the Minnesota Vikings.
Conklin told MLive a couple of years ago he and Moore still have a solid relationship, and that, “To this day, he’s still probably the best coach I’ve ever had.”

Dax Hill? That is some nice work. That was awhile ago though. Im on board with Moore and I hope he crushes recruiting. That is the one area where he can bring us to new levels.

Legitimate question. I'm not aware of any huge fish, and I thought that he whiffed on a few big ones. He seems very likeable and a decent recruiter, but is he really an ace recruiter?
January 25th, 2024 at 10:35 PM ^
Did you not read the OP? Are Dax Hill and JJ nothing? What about the excellent 5 man OL class he brought in this year. Moore is an Ace.
January 26th, 2024 at 10:50 AM ^
This 247 list has him sixth best, so I stand corrected (fyi, they give partidge credit for dax). Excerpt below.
Moore has been responsible for bringing in some truly game-changing talent. Some of the players he’s brought in are J.J. McCarthy, Donovan Edwards, and Mazi Smith. In the past five classes, he has ranked in the top 50 of 247’s list three times and top 15 twice. His average Recruit Ranking is 91.4.

I’m not sure the “new coach” effect exists in the current NIL landscape. We shall see
January 25th, 2024 at 7:10 PM ^
That’s fair, in the past I know coaches can sell “if you thought we were good before, wait till I really take over, come and join and kickstart this”. I’d imagine even in NIL (and potentially backing from boosters as landscape shifts further) we may elevate some of our recruiting.
January 26th, 2024 at 10:48 AM ^
Idk even MSU's new coach has been able to bring a fair amount of guys in. Are a lot of them MAC players? Absolutely, but they had some momentum lol

Fire up the money cannon and the recruiting will be much easier

What if SM actually ends up doing a better job of recruiting than JH?
And let's hope the new contract that JH didn't sign has new NIL framework that SM can use.
January 25th, 2024 at 8:17 PM ^
It's certainly possible, but it does depend in part on how you define "better job of recruiting".
Sherrone may well bring in more 5 stars. No, he isn't going to bring in Alabama or Georgia quantitites, but it's very much possible that he brings in more.
He very well may bring in more "highly rated" players. So that on paper, it looks like he's done a better job.
You still have to have an eye for talent and bring in the players that the recruiting sites underrate. And then you have to develop that talent. And after all that, you have to win the games.
If Sherrone lands the #1 recruiting class but goes 8-4, that's not better. Truth is, winning the recruiting game on paper is meaningless, except on internet message boards. Winning games matters and there is more than one way to do that. It's going to be hard for Sherrone to do better in ways that matter, but I do think he'll do well.

Agree...
Everyone keeps saying we need to 'recruit better'. WTF??? Since 2021, we are 30-3, with 3 B1G Championships, 3 playoff appearances, and a National Championship! The roster this season was the best across all of college football - by a mile! The 2-deep (and sometimes 4-deep) would have started for the vast majority of teams throughout the nation. We're losing 20-some players to graduation and draft. A few of the highly rated recruits (Walker, Clemmons, ??) hit the portal BECAUSE THEY CAN'T GET ON THE FIELD!!!
Recruiting has been working quite well, thank you...
January 25th, 2024 at 7:49 PM ^
First thing he needs to recruit is the current roster over the next 30 days. Man that is a long time for the portal to be open.
January 25th, 2024 at 8:19 PM ^
On the plus side, classes have started everywhere, making this a lousy time to hit the portal. There will be some guys that leave during the next window, but I don't think it's likely many will go in the next 30 days.
January 26th, 2024 at 10:49 AM ^
I hope Sherrone heavily involves the key defensive guys in the DC hiring. Need to anything and everything to keep Johnson, Graham, Grant, Moore, etc. happy
January 25th, 2024 at 7:51 PM ^
That’s an impressive list for an OC.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:17 PM ^
yes but it's kind of like HS highlight film--just shows the hits (which are certainly impressive).
but for a more complete picture of recruiting, I would be interested to see the misses he was primary on.
January 25th, 2024 at 10:37 PM ^
That is a pretty dumb take IMO. Almost every recruiter has more misses than hits. It is the name of the game.
January 26th, 2024 at 8:05 AM ^
This is why you recruit hundreds of players to only bring in 20-some! Dumb take, indeed...
January 25th, 2024 at 7:58 PM ^
NIL has a lot of work to do. We’ve made some progress and we have to keep raising money. Not all for new recruits, but for retaining the roster and the Portal.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:01 PM ^
I've heard that it's up to state law and Michigan has one of the more restrictive ones so even if the University wanted to do more the state has kind of put their hands behind their backs.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:36 PM ^
so you have different rules for when and how much you can pay players, and you have different rules for who can be admitted to different schools… that doesn’t sound like a very even playing field
January 26th, 2024 at 2:08 AM ^
With all of the UM and Staaaeee grads and fans in the legislature this should get fixed ASAP.
With conference expansion there are some major recruiting and NIL juggernauts coming in...UM cannot afford to lose more ground..
Harbaugh was uniquely qualified to will the programme over its limitations. Can't expect SM to do the same, especially given how much the landscape has changed since Harbaugh came on board with satellite camps, signing of the stars and sleepovers.
January 26th, 2024 at 8:08 AM ^
"With all of the UM and Staaaeee grads and fans in the legislature this should get fixed ASAP. "
LOL!! It was that band of nincompoops that passed the current law into place. Only to be followed by places like Texas making it a crime to investigate schools for whatever they do recruiting-wise...
Face facts - Michigan will never play college football on an 'even playing field'.
January 26th, 2024 at 10:50 AM ^
I mean MSU seems to have their NIL figured out better than us
January 25th, 2024 at 7:59 PM ^
Can’t help but worry that Moore isn’t the coach Harbaugh is, if only because what are the odds? But I’m confident he will be a better recruiter. He’s bound to connect better with the youths.
January 25th, 2024 at 8:38 PM ^
Player evaluation (and development) has led to much of our success.
I am hoping that was not all Harbaugh. I would not expect it was.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:50 PM ^
One difference between Harbaugh and Moore regarding recruiting will be - experience.
For over 30 years - going back to when Jim worked with Jack (his father) at Western Kentucky - he's been involved in assessing talent and recruiting.
I'm not suggesting / implying that Moore and other members of the staff don't also have a "keen eye for potential / talent" - but, Jim had been doing it for over 30 years.
January 25th, 2024 at 10:01 PM ^
Harbaugh won the only outright championship in the modern area of football at Michigan. Not even Bo could get that done. So Moore has a long road ahead of him to surpass Harbaugh. It’s going to be a long time before someone is as good as Harbaugh’s last 3 years at Michigan.
January 25th, 2024 at 8:07 PM ^
Who's Maxi for $100, Alex???
January 25th, 2024 at 9:34 PM ^
How’s his pad level?
January 25th, 2024 at 8:18 PM ^
Tell me about our NIL program for recruits vs other powers that be. If no change, then we are in the 12-20 category with Moore or without.
Unfortunately in the status quo Michigan is going to be more about developing mostly vs getting those top X%.
January 25th, 2024 at 8:23 PM ^
We're probably in that range no matter what, unless the University relocates to the south or California. We can pop into the top ten here and there, but the running average is going to be somewhere in the 12-18 range.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:53 PM ^
Loser’s mentality. If OSU, ND and Penn State can recruit in the top 10, we sure as hell can.
January 25th, 2024 at 8:39 PM ^
There's an article in the SI national championship magazine about NIL at Michigan that some people need to read. There's quotes in there from Corum and Keegan about NIL at Michigan. It tells you everything you need to know about the mindset inside that locker room in regards to it and how they believe it should work. And it's not paying recruits before they even play a snap. Will that change now?, I don't know. Is it sustainable? That will remain to be seen.
I forsee at some point the players being unionized with some sort of revenue sharing. It's the only way to stop the tampering and paying recruits to come to X school. The current model isn't sustainable and the Supreme Court isn't in the NCAAs pocket.
Speaking of recruiting, national signing day is just less then two weeks away any word on Gatlin Bair? I believe he received a 5th star in the rankings, but haven't really heard anything in a bit.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:29 PM ^
I doubt he improves recruiting. This new NIL era, has really limited how well Michigan can recruit. Jay was a great recruiter so losing him really sucks, but even then with NIL we just weren't going to pull a lot of elite kids.
Coming off a national title, even with Harbaugh leaving, there's not a lot of kids talking about Michigan it seems, so I bet it stays the same or maybe declines slightly.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:35 PM ^
Part of Michigan’s recruiting pitch is that going to UM has a lifetime bonus, it’s a 40 year plan. NIL seriously undercuts the appeal of that pitch. “OK: I’m going to be a millionaire before my sophomore year, so…I think I’m good.”
January 25th, 2024 at 9:54 PM ^
And - part of that 40 year plan is - "you might be a millionaire before your sophomore year - but, if you don't plan appropriately, you could be broke before you're 30".
I like Michigan's approach - and, believe it will be five years or so before certain schools money cannons run out of ammunition. Of course, certain schools may have a never ending cache of ammo - particularly those with oil money.
January 26th, 2024 at 2:18 AM ^
Like that approach too...
But now you are in a conference w Oregon, OSU, USC...not oil money but w lots of 'just win no matter what' wealthy alumni and donors.
If UM isn't going to play that game then it needs to be at the vocal forefront of demanding structural changes in fair, equitable and transparent revenue sharing w the players.
January 25th, 2024 at 10:38 PM ^
I guess we will know soon how good of a recruiter, coach, and how much he is liked and respected by players in the next 30 days with the transfer portal opening for all UM players and recruits with JH exit,
January 25th, 2024 at 11:31 PM ^
I won’t be surprised if the bust rate on highly ranked recruits (top 250) doesn’t increase. The bust rate on five stars was previously around 50%, but now almost every five star will be getting NIL in the six to seven figures. I imagine it’s a heckuva lot harder to get out of bed and go work out at 6 am when you got a half million dollars in the bank. Some guys will work just as hard, but not all. Especially 18-19 year olds.
I’m guessing in time, NIL and buying recruits will level off because the bust rate will become higher and Boosters won’t see the returns they expect for the money they are spending, but I could be completely wrong. Time will tell, but in the meantime, it hope we don’t have to strictly rely on diamonds in the rough/undervalued recruits.
January 26th, 2024 at 2:22 AM ^
Not only a disincentive to make that 6a workout but then to sit through a lecture given by a guy who makes a fraction of what you are making...at 18-19 years old. All that money with few if any strings attached would have blown my head up like nobody's business at that age...
January 26th, 2024 at 9:22 AM ^
If there really is a law that restricts Michigan from hiring SM for 7 days. They should just hire him now and pay the fine, if they don't get a waiver.
January 26th, 2024 at 9:57 AM ^
Well, we all know that Coach knows how to setup Peacock. That'll be a win amongst the recruits.
January 26th, 2024 at 10:46 AM ^
At least there will be no worries of coach Moore going to the NFL for the next decade, so that could help recruiting.
January 26th, 2024 at 10:58 AM ^
I'd love to see Michigan continue using NIL to keep veteran contributors and pull in proven commodities through the portal where needed. Michigan is not going to outbid OSU, UGA, Bama, Ole Miss, etc, but if they can maintain the culture they've built and convince players who would otherwise enter the draft to stay, they'll continue to thrive where the mercenaries fail.
