Moore Recruiting Potential as HC?

With Jim gone to LA, it’s expected Sherrone Moore takes over as HC. A negative of Harbaugh’s NFL saga that has been bemoaned often here was the repercussions that had on recruiting. If Sherrone is HC, he has a track record of being a great recruiter, I’d imagine we may see recruiting see an uptick (especially with that “new coach smell” most programs get when a new coach comes in). Obviously the staff has shown scouting and development to further than starz, but it’s nice to know Moore has been able to identify high level talent and recruit them to UM.

Notable Moore recruits are…

Dax Hill- Primary Recruiter

JJ McCarthy- Primary Recruiter

Donovan Edwards- Secondary Recruiter

Andrew Gentry- Primary Recruiter

Giovani El-Hadi- Primary Recruiter

AJ Henning- Primary Recruiter

Maxi Smith- Secondary Recruiter

Braiden McGregor- Primary Recruiter

Tyler Morris- Secondary Recruiter

Andrew Sprague- Primary Recruiter

Trevor Keegan- Primary Recruiter

Roman Wilson- Secondary Recruiter

Rayshaun Benny- Primary Recruiter

Semaj Morgan- Secondary Recruiter

Blake Frazier- Primary Recruiter

He flipped Dax Hill back from Alabama. How many recruiters have we had that flip Bama commits?

Other than that:

In total for the 2021 class, Moore is credited with eight commits — more than one-third of Michigan’s freshman class.

His hard work on the recruiting trail goes back to his days at Central Michigan. As the tight ends coach there, he evaluated and got a commitment from Tyler Conklin, who turned into a good college tight end and is now in the NFL playing for the Minnesota Vikings.

Conklin told MLive a couple of years ago he and Moore still have a solid relationship, and that, “To this day, he’s still probably the best coach I’ve ever had.”

This 247 list has him sixth best, so I stand corrected (fyi, they give partidge credit for dax). Excerpt below.

Moore has been responsible for bringing in some truly game-changing talent. Some of the players he’s brought in are J.J. McCarthy, Donovan Edwards, and Mazi Smith. In the past five classes, he has ranked in the top 50 of 247’s list three times and top 15 twice. His average Recruit Ranking is 91.4.

It's certainly possible, but it does depend in part on how you define "better job of recruiting".

Sherrone may well bring in more 5 stars.  No, he isn't going to bring in Alabama or Georgia quantitites, but it's very much possible that he brings in more.

He very well may bring in more "highly rated" players.  So that on paper, it looks like he's done a better job.

You still have to have an eye for talent and bring in the players that the recruiting sites underrate.  And then you have to develop that talent.  And after all that, you have to win the games.

If Sherrone lands the #1 recruiting class but goes 8-4, that's not better.  Truth is, winning the recruiting game on paper is meaningless, except on internet message boards. Winning games matters and there is more than one way to do that.  It's going to be hard for Sherrone to do better in ways that matter, but I do think he'll do well.

Agree...

Everyone keeps saying we need to 'recruit better'.  WTF???  Since 2021, we are 30-3, with 3 B1G Championships, 3 playoff appearances, and a National Championship!  The roster this season was the best across all of college football - by a mile!  The 2-deep (and sometimes 4-deep) would have started for the vast majority of teams throughout the nation.  We're losing 20-some players to graduation and draft.  A few of the highly rated recruits (Walker, Clemmons, ??) hit the portal BECAUSE THEY CAN'T GET ON THE FIELD!!!

Recruiting has been working quite well, thank you...

With all of the UM and Staaaeee grads and fans in the legislature this should get fixed ASAP.

With conference expansion there are some major recruiting and NIL juggernauts coming in...UM cannot afford to lose more ground..

Harbaugh was uniquely qualified to will the programme over its limitations. Can't expect SM to do the same, especially given how much the landscape has changed since Harbaugh came on board with satellite camps, signing of the stars and sleepovers.

"With all of the UM and Staaaeee grads and fans in the legislature this should get fixed ASAP. "

LOL!!  It was that band of nincompoops that passed the current law into place.  Only to be followed by places like Texas making it a crime to investigate schools for whatever they do recruiting-wise...

Face facts - Michigan will never play college football on an 'even playing field'.

Can’t help but worry that Moore isn’t the coach Harbaugh is, if only because what are the odds? But I’m confident he will be a better recruiter. He’s bound to connect better with the youths.

One difference between Harbaugh and Moore regarding recruiting will be - experience.

For over 30 years - going back to when Jim worked with Jack (his father) at Western Kentucky - he's been involved in assessing talent and recruiting.

I'm not suggesting / implying that Moore and other members of the staff don't also have a "keen eye for potential / talent" - but, Jim had been doing it for over 30 years.

Harbaugh won the only outright championship in the modern area of football at Michigan. Not even Bo could get that done. So Moore has a long road ahead of him to surpass Harbaugh. It’s going to be a long time before someone is as good as Harbaugh’s last 3 years at Michigan.

Tell me about our NIL program for recruits vs other powers that be.  If no change, then we are in the 12-20 category with Moore or without.

Unfortunately in the status quo Michigan is going to be more about developing mostly vs getting those top X%.

There's an article in the SI national championship magazine about NIL at Michigan that some people need to read. There's quotes in there from Corum and Keegan about NIL at Michigan. It tells you everything you need to know about the mindset inside that locker room in regards to it and how they believe it should work. And it's not paying recruits before they even play a snap. Will that change now?, I don't know. Is it sustainable? That will remain to be seen.

I forsee at some point the players being unionized with some sort of revenue sharing. It's the only way to stop the tampering and paying recruits to come to X school. The current model isn't sustainable and the Supreme Court isn't in the NCAAs pocket.

Speaking of recruiting, national signing day is just less then two weeks away any word on Gatlin Bair? I believe he received a 5th star in the rankings, but haven't really heard anything in a bit.

I doubt he improves recruiting. This new NIL era, has really limited how well Michigan can recruit. Jay was a great recruiter so losing him really sucks, but even then with NIL we just weren't going to pull a lot of elite kids.

Coming off a national title, even with Harbaugh leaving, there's not a lot of kids talking about Michigan it seems, so I bet it stays the same or maybe declines slightly.

Part of Michigan’s recruiting pitch is that going to UM has a lifetime bonus, it’s a 40 year plan. NIL seriously undercuts the appeal of that pitch. “OK: I’m going to be a millionaire before my sophomore year, so…I think I’m good.”

Amazinblu

January 25th, 2024 at 9:54 PM ^

And - part of that 40 year plan is - "you might be a millionaire before your sophomore year - but, if you don't plan appropriately, you could be broke before you're 30".

I like Michigan's approach - and, believe it will be five years or so before certain schools money cannons run out of ammunition.   Of course, certain schools may have a never ending cache of ammo - particularly those with oil money.

LDNfan

Like that approach too...

But now you are in a conference w Oregon, OSU, USC...not oil money but w lots of 'just win no matter what' wealthy alumni and donors.

If UM isn't going to play that game then it needs to be at the vocal forefront of demanding structural changes in fair, equitable and transparent revenue sharing w the players.

I guess we will know soon how good of a recruiter, coach, and how much he is liked and respected by players in the next 30 days with the transfer portal opening for all UM players and recruits with JH exit,

I won’t be surprised if the bust rate on highly ranked recruits (top 250) doesn’t increase. The bust rate on five stars was previously around 50%, but now almost every five star will be getting NIL in the six to seven figures. I imagine it’s a heckuva lot harder to get out of bed and go work out at 6 am when you got a half million dollars in the bank. Some guys will work just as hard, but not all. Especially 18-19 year olds.

I’m guessing in time, NIL and buying recruits will level off because the bust rate will become higher and Boosters won’t see the returns they expect for the money they are spending, but I could be completely wrong. Time will tell, but in the meantime, it hope we don’t have to strictly rely on diamonds in the rough/undervalued recruits.

If there really is a law that restricts Michigan from hiring SM for 7 days. They should just hire him now and pay the fine, if they don't get a waiver.

I'd love to see Michigan continue using NIL to keep veteran contributors and pull in proven commodities through the portal where needed.  Michigan is not going to outbid OSU, UGA, Bama, Ole Miss, etc, but if they can maintain the culture they've built and convince players who would otherwise enter the draft to stay, they'll continue to thrive where the mercenaries fail.
