Will You Root For the Chargers? and Will Jim Win A Super Bowl With the Chargers?
I want to start this off by saying I love Jim Harbaugh. I’m very thankful for what we accomplished here and I will absolutely root for him to succeed in the NFL again. As far as winning a Super Bowl, I’m not so sure he’ll be able to win one. I think he’ll make the AFC Championship Game twice in 5 years. I can’t see him making it past Mahomes, Burrow and Josh Allen right now.
January 25th, 2024 at 7:15 AM ^
Yes I’ll root for Jim and no the chargers won’t ever win a Super Bowl. I wish Jim the best but he made a mistake going back to the nfl. Especially to a team that’s as big a mess as LA. I’m not sold on Herbert and their salary cap issue screws them for a few years. Plus the nfl in general sucks! If Detroit wasn’t on the verge of making history, and if there was anything else to do this time of year I could give a shit about it.
January 25th, 2024 at 8:04 AM ^
I'm hoping they pull a Brad Holmes and trade Herbert and draft JJ. Then Blake in the third.
Then I'd probably root for them.
January 25th, 2024 at 8:11 AM ^
And AJ Barner. He needs some TEs!
January 25th, 2024 at 9:09 AM ^
NFL definitively doesn't suck - and that is not just my Lions recency bias talking. The NFL is the undisputed champ of all North American sports leagues and is sitting at the big boy table globally with the top European Football leagues.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:46 AM ^
It may make money but the NFL most certainly sucks.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:15 PM ^
It’s a non-profit organization.
January 25th, 2024 at 2:53 PM ^
So is Blue Cross Blue Shield...
January 25th, 2024 at 2:39 PM ^
That may be true, but the clown show that college football has turned into certainly isn’t any better.
January 25th, 2024 at 10:09 AM ^
So your entire argument is based on revenue figures?
January 25th, 2024 at 2:16 PM ^
I will not root for him or against, I am indifferent. I am not a JH hero worshiper, I have never been a huge fan. I think his actions prove he has an extremely narcissistic personality and like most of those types, his motive is only Jim Harbaugh and he believes he is entitled to that behavior. That's not to deny, his is one of the greatest coaches in the sport. Just my take, nothing fantastic.
I live in socal, the Rams have a fantastic young head coach and equally as fantastic front office in McVay and Snead. The Chargers job to me is the exact reason he left the 49rs and NFL, poor leadership from the top. The 49rs owners were able to realize it and removed the snot nosed kid from everything other than a title holder. Bringing in John Lynch (by his mom) was genius.
Here's the problem, the Spanos family is NOT the DeBartalo family in regards to the leadership of their team, they have kept the team squandering for decades and I dont think that changes with Harbaugh, in fact I think it worsens. This wont last more than 3-4 years before Jim implodes and at 65 he will just retire to the SoCal beaches with his lovely wife and fam.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:17 AM ^
So trade Herbert for a unproven rookie QB? Yes Jim can win a Superbowl with the Chargers. Herbert, Allen and Ekler are a great 3some. The NFL is known for quick turn arounds. They need to cut defensive cap space and draft defense.
The NFL doesn't suck, the ratings prove that. The past 3 years off playoff games have been outstanding.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:24 AM ^
Ekeler was great, but I'm not sure you can count on that going forward. He's 28, and ran for just over 600 yards and 5 TDs this year. Allen will be 32 next year, and will be be in the final year of a deal that includes a $34M+ cap hit ($5M roster bonus). He's also been injury prone throughout his career.
He'll have major holes to fill.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:51 PM ^
Ekeler is a free agent and the Chargers are $55M over the cap. He's gone and they'll have to cut some of their other best/highest paid guys this year as well.
To answer the original post's questions. No, I won't root for the Chargers. Been a Pats fan since the mid-90s. And he won't win a Super Bowl with a second rate franchise.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:20 AM ^
I couldn't care less about the Chargers. I wish Jim the best but the fact they took Harbaugh makes me dislike them actually. I doubt they win a Super Bowl. I agree that Jim made a mistake. He was on the precipice of building a juggernaut at Michigan but he walked away and Michigan let him walk. Yes I'm being petty but we spent two decades wandering through the wilderness and if we aren't careful could end up right back there again.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:08 PM ^
Agree. Fuck the Chargers forever for taking our coach.
January 25th, 2024 at 1:01 PM ^
Even if the odds are against him winning a Super Bowl, I don’t think he made a mistake. Yeah, it’s crazy to think that he’s walking away from an undefeated season and championship team, but it’s not like odds are in favor of a repeat with how much we lose on offense or the direction of college football. Yes, culture is good and morale is high, and defensive scheme is good with many returning, but the total BS JH and Michigan has had to go through leaves a bad taste in the mouth and writing on the wall. I think the target on his back is even bigger. Despite all the hurdles, he took the team to the promised land. It’s not hard to think that this may be the last time all the stars align, especially knowing that the B1G and NCAA and media will turn a blind eye to some of the worst offenders yet come down hard on us, and given our unwillingness (justified as it may be) to play the dirty game of NIL-to-play. As much as I love Michigan, I can totally understand why he would want to get back into the NFL once he achieved his goals at his alma mater. And I don’t think a Super Bowl victory is needed to validate this decision.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:22 AM ^
I root for players/coaches in the NFL from Michigan in a general way, but don't care much about it. NFL<<<<< college football for me.
So no, won't be spending any energy on the Chargers.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:53 AM ^
Yes and yes.
Jim Harbaugh spent nearly a decade rebuilding his alma mater to greatness. I will root for him to win a Super Bowl.
Harbaugh has won everywhere he has been, even situations much worse that the Chargers. He can win there.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:10 PM ^
Yes and yes also.
Reading through the comments it looks like we are in the minority that Jim can win the superbowl. He’s made it everywhere, and so he’ll make it there, …
A lot of yes, nos and many no nos too.
January 25th, 2024 at 12:28 PM ^
I don't know how you could call what someone else did a "mistake".....without knowing their thought process. He's going to make more money for less work (no recruiting, no NIL, no portal....) in better weather. All of those are pretty big pluses to start off with. It's safe to assume he'd like to win a Super Bowl and he can't do that in college. I'm shocked by how shocked people are over his decision (and that doesn't even factor in any of the NCAA stuff).
January 25th, 2024 at 7:15 AM ^
Yes and I hope so.
Although I will root for the Lions when they play the LA Chargers.
January 25th, 2024 at 7:15 AM ^
Not while the Lions win all of them.
January 25th, 2024 at 7:17 AM ^
Nope and nope. Chargers aren’t winning a Super Bowl with JH and why should I root for a team that can barely get people in LA to root for them?
January 25th, 2024 at 8:05 AM ^
Agreed. I think Harbaugh will eventually regret leaving.
January 25th, 2024 at 8:20 AM ^
A sad statement.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:25 AM ^
It's like Beilein, except people in Cleveland actually care a little tiny bit about the Cavs.
January 25th, 2024 at 8:30 AM ^
As conniving as the NFL is, Jim won’t miss dealing with vindictive organizations like the B1G and NCAA with only an incapable University of Michigan bureaucracy to back him up. The cost him the ability to coach 6 games with the best team of his career. Think he’ll miss that?
January 25th, 2024 at 9:09 AM ^
not to mention relentlessly recruiting, recruiting your own roster, the transfer portal....I'm not saying he left because of those things but you have to imagine that's a relief to a head coach to be able to put players under contract, draft and trade players instead.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:14 AM ^
I can’t imagine having to constantly kiss the asses of teenagers is much fun.
January 25th, 2024 at 8:37 AM ^
Jim Harbaugh isn't the type of guy who regrets his career decisions. He'll be just fine. He succeeds in some form wherever he goes and this will be no different.
January 25th, 2024 at 8:46 AM ^
He may not ever have it as good as he did at Michigan, but I don't think he'll regret it. College football is a mess right now with recruiting, NIL and the transfer portal. Most all coaches that have the opportunity to get the NFL are going to take it until the College Football business model is fixed.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:02 AM ^
My view as well. One of the hardest things to do is what comes next after you achieve your goals. He did that at Michigan, but after that comes a void that needs to be filled. He chose the easy route to fill that void.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:20 AM ^
Will he regret leaving on top? I doubt it, he will have generational wealth, and he is taking one last swing at the last tiny gap in his resume. He has a chance to be one of 4 (I think) with a college and Super Bowl Championship. I think what he did is smart...even though I would have prefeered he stayed.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:58 AM ^
Agree. I will root for Rams. Nobody in LA likes the San Diego Chargers. They have the worst ownership in the NFL, and are not LA. I hope Harbaugh wins that elusive Super Bowl as a Coach, but will not root for Chargers.
January 25th, 2024 at 7:17 AM ^
Man’s been a winner everywhere. Herbert has all the talent in the world. Chargers just need to manage the cap and upgrade the defense. Jim will give them the attitude the franchise has lacked since Schottenheimer.
Personally thought Falcons or Eagles (if they fired Sirianni) were better situations but Chargers have the QB, everything else can work out.
Still a surreal experience to be here after winning a national fucking title.
January 25th, 2024 at 7:35 AM ^
…after winning a national fucking title
Is this really a thing? Sign me up!
January 25th, 2024 at 8:01 AM ^
A tournament like this would certainly bring new meaning to the phrase "one and done."
January 25th, 2024 at 8:10 AM ^
With Orjis in the end zone, we’re the favorite to win it.
January 25th, 2024 at 8:53 AM ^
is a thing. in football. this year, heck, just 17 short days ago. let me tell you about it. first, we played a team called the washington huskies. they are from....

I mean there are awards…
Fun fact: my wife and I started our honeymoon in Vegas and were in town the same time as both the adult video awards and the CES electronics show.
We’ve never laughed so hard as we did just sitting in the lobby of the Bellagio and watching the two groups converge. Positively exquisite people watching conditions.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:42 AM ^
Which group did you find more stimulating?
January 25th, 2024 at 9:58 AM ^
Welp- it was my honeymoon so I didn’t require that much extra stimulation at the time
January 25th, 2024 at 3:17 PM ^
Attaboy!
January 25th, 2024 at 5:34 PM ^
*at the time
January 25th, 2024 at 9:13 AM ^
He is in a tough division. So, they may not make the playoff for the first couple of years. I wonder if Jim and the owners will have the patience. Sometimes, the second time may not be the charm. See Chip Kelly.
I’ll be cheering for him.
January 25th, 2024 at 10:24 AM ^
I suspect the Harbaugh's wouldn't mind being back in California either. Jim spent a ton of his professional career out there and since he's probably not going back to SF again, he might've been hoping for the Chargers or Rams jobs for a while
January 25th, 2024 at 7:18 AM ^
I will enthusiastically root for Jim to win in the NFL and will even go as far as to add one of those sweet powder blue shirts to my collection. My enthusiasm for Jim to succeed will only be matched by my desire to see Warde Manuel thrown out on his fat keister.
January 25th, 2024 at 7:18 AM ^
Of course I will root for Jim (except when they play the Lions). We will always have 2023.
Will he win? I don’t know, but he’s a great coach. Wouldn’t surprise me.
January 25th, 2024 at 10:21 AM ^
Same idea here. Rooting for Jim will slot in behind the other NFL teams I have a preference for already. I bear no ill will and hope he has succedes, but this isn't changing who my favorite team is
January 25th, 2024 at 7:18 AM ^
Yes they will be improved but they may never win a Superbowl. It doesn't matter. Getting to move on from NCAA bs and play against big bro is life goals.
