Look How Easy It Is: ChatGPT writes article, with made up quotes, about Michigan winning the CFP
Prompt: Please make an article that says repeatedly that Michigan will win. Use made-up quotes from anonymous coaches sprinkled throughout to support the conclusion.
Reply: "As the College Football Playoff National Championship draws near, a growing consensus among anonymous coaches from across the country is that Michigan stands a strong chance of clinching the title against Washington. These insights, gathered from various sources within the college football community, highlight the key strengths that make Michigan a favorite for the national championship.
One anonymous coach from the Big Ten highlighted Michigan's defensive tenacity as a decisive factor. "Michigan's defense has been a fortress all season. They've got the ability to shut down even the most dynamic offenses. I wouldn't bet against them," the coach said, emphasizing Michigan's prowess in stifling opponents.
Another coach, who has faced Michigan in the past, pointed to their offensive strategy as a significant edge. "Their ground game is just relentless, and when you combine that with their efficient passing attack, it's a recipe for success. They're well-balanced and tough to beat," he stated.
A coach from the Pac-12, who wished to remain unnamed, spoke about the psychological advantage Michigan holds. "There's a certain grit and determination in the Michigan squad this year. They've got the momentum and the mindset of champions. It's going to take a lot to stop them," he mentioned.
Echoing these sentiments, an ACC coach added, "Michigan's coaching staff has done a phenomenal job this year. They've prepared the team for every scenario. In games of this magnitude, preparation is key, and Michigan seems to have that in spades."
Furthermore, a coach from the SEC, known for its competitive football environment, praised Michigan's adaptability. "I've seen them adjust their game plan effectively against different teams. They are not just about raw strength; there's a lot of strategic thinking in their play. Washington will have to be at their absolute best to outwit Michigan," he said.
In addition to these strategic advantages, many coaches mentioned the intangibles that Michigan brings to the table. "There's a winning culture that you can clearly see in this Michigan team. They believe they can win, and that belief is infectious and translates into their performance on the field," a coach from the Big 12 observed.
Finally, a coach from the Mountain West Conference summed up the sentiment: "Michigan has shown time and again that they are ready for the big stage. They have the talent, the coaching, and the drive. It's hard to see them not lifting the trophy this year."
In conclusion, while Washington certainly presents a formidable challenge, the collective insights from anonymous coaches around the country seem to tilt the scales in favor of Michigan in the upcoming CFP National Championship game. Their balanced attack, formidable defense, strategic adaptability, and winning mindset are all factors that these coaches believe will lead Michigan to victory."

I'm not reading all that. Can someone give me a TLDR?

TLDR: Articles like Feldmans with "anonymous quotes" are readily generated by modern AI

Might be an improvement, really. As long as it's made up, at least the "I" in "AI" stands for "intelligence".

We Win!!!!!

Perfect response for this post. Add in some fart noises.

You can dislike Feldman's preview articles if you want, but if you're insinuating that he's fabricating the quotes, that's a Message Board Geniuses-level take
January 4th, 2024 at 12:57 PM ^
tbh, it's not that he's fabricating. It's more that he is taking what coaches say -- off the record, anonymously -- and treating it as if that is definitely what they really think. As opposed to, say, thinking of these people as often having an axe to grind, etc. This is naive at best.

Look, you have to admit that all those anonymous coaches have a lot of free time on their hands right now to take a good look at things.

I've been under the impression I'm the only commenter on this board that is not a bot for quite some time.
January 4th, 2024 at 12:55 PM ^
That is exactly what a bot would say.

Let me save you bots both the hassle and just continue how the actual discussion will go until it ends.
First commenter: "I've been under the impression I'm the only commenter on this board that is not a bot for quite some time."
Second Commenter: "That is exactly what a bot would say."
First commenter: "No, I'm definitely a real person. Why do you think I seem like a bot?"
Second Commenter: "I was mostly joking, but you do seem to post a lot and at odd hours. Makes me wonder if you ever sleep!"
First Commenter: "Ha, well I may keep strange hours but I assure you I'm human. I post whenever I have down time between my classes and part-time job. The internet never sleeps, so why should I?"
Second Commenter: "Okay, fair enough! I guess we night owls seem a bit bot-ish with our constant posting. My bad for the accusation. It's nice to meet another real person on here - feels like it's 90% spam lately."
First Commenter: "Tell me about it! Here's to proving we're part of the 10%." raises coffee mug

I wish this was around when I was in school. Those essays that always gave me anxiety would be a breeze.

I was on an airport shuttle and overheard a couple college professors talking about how every paper submitted has to be run through an AI check. It has to be huge software business by both sides trying to stay ahead of one another.
Apparently, the software does give false positives, and honest students get accused.
Does anyone know the status of this at M? I'm out of the academic circles.

While finishing my Master’s degree last year at a directional university here in Michigan, I also worked as a GA to help offset some tuition costs and work alongside some faculty members I respect.
During that time, I taught and graded two different undergrad classes of about 35-40 students. At the beginning of each semester, Fall ‘22 and Spring ‘23, most students seemed to submit original works that needed multiple revisions with average grammar and punctuation along with little data reinforcing their arguments. Whatever.
Magically, by the end of the semester, it seemed that Mark Twain combined with Sir Isaac Newton had written most of the student submissions through ChatGPT. While it was tough to confirm and I gave many students the benefit of the doubt, some were taking blanket topics or theories verbatim from that source and were referred to the university’s code of conduct office for blatant plagiarism.
In other words, buck up and write your own shit.

Oral examinations ftw

Or just tell ChatGPT to add in some punctuation and grammatical errors!

Personally, I think AI checks are in a losing battle trying to catch AI use because prompts can progressively train the AI to produce content that avoids detection.
January 4th, 2024 at 2:04 PM ^
Eventually, there'll be laws requiring AI software to have a separate backdoor where professors can log in and verify directly if this was used or not for essay writing. It'll also be a money maker for these AI software companies. Pay Universities to get access to their personal AI check verification system.

Or maybe higher education will have to evolve beyond giving out degrees for writing book reports.
January 4th, 2024 at 3:14 PM ^
Learning to think critically and put these thoughts on paper is a vital life lesson and an important part of working in white collar jobs. As someone who hires, if you have a crappy cover letter, your application will quickly fall into the trash bin. This is because writing reports and completing compliance related messages are an important part of the job. Everyone should practice writing and college is a great place to do so.

Yes, ChatGPT can write articles. Also students' term papers (shhh!). Shocking, I know!
Next, be amazed when I tell you that anyone can edit Wikipedia!

I find most chatGTO stuff stilted and lacking in personality. Given that it's written by a software program, I guess this isn't surprising.

This is hilarious.
