Big Sean catching strays.
[After THE JUMP: JJ items]
Mysterious JJ injury rumors confirmed. The hit he took against Penn State that saw him get up limping was indeed the culprit:
JJ McCarthy says his lower-leg injury is "almost perfectly healed." Said it was "a rough couple weeks there" since he endured the injury at Penn State.
— Zach Shaw (@_ZachShaw) November 27, 2023
This goes some way towards explaining why Michigan didn't call any runs for him against Ohio State, but does not explain why he got a live read against Maryland. Also, if McCarthy was able to move well enough to pick up those scramble yards it seems like they could have had him keep it a couple times, if only to keep OSU honest.
The wild explanation for the wild throw. OSU freshman safety Malik Hartford was on the field for exactly one snap. It was this one:
McCarthy on this throw: "I was just doing film study all week on No. 25, and whenever he turns his head, he doesn't look at the quarterback, so once I saw him put eyes on Roman, I knew he was only covering the width of his shoulders and I just let it rip." https://t.co/Qt073NUHCH
— Brock Heilig (@brockheilig) November 27, 2023
I guess he must be referring to the quick glance Hartford took towards Wilson at the beginning of the play, because Hartford doesn't actually turn and run until McCarthy is in the middle of his throwing motion. FWIW, Hartford had about 100 snaps in OSU's previous three games so he was on the field enough to get a read on his play.
Partridge releases a statement. He waited until after OSU to do so so as to not provide the proverbial distraction. Upshot: he denies any knowledge of Stalions's activities and denies destroying evidence. He says he was terminated "because of a failure 'to abide by the University directive not to discuss an ongoing NCAA investigation with anyone associated with the Michigan Football Program.'" IE, he likely discussed with a player how he should approach an interview with the NCAA.
If that's true it should mean Partridge's dismissal won't add onto the notice of allegations that's coming down the pike at some point.
Iowa: not projected to score a zilly. Vegas and SP+ both expect Iowa to score about six points, and here's a doozy of a prop:

Marcus Hall on the epic double birds. Adam Rittenberg catches up with Hall and asks about one of the more, uh, colorful recent moments in the rivalry:
"I didn't hear anybody in the crowd, I didn't hear anything," Hall said. "All I was thinking was, 'It's my senior year. I've looked forward to my senior year playing Michigan for so long.' The energy and preparation that goes into that game, you're so invested in that game. For it to end before halftime, I just blew up."
As ABC cameras followed him, Hall threw his helmet down on the Ohio State sideline, kicked a bench and then pumped his fist in anger. Then, as he turned into the stadium tunnel, he raised both of his middle fingers toward the Big House crowd.
"I compare it to, when you're fed up on the job and it's time to go, just let 'em fly," Hall said.
They're going to put you in the sports gulag, Jim. Harbaugh made another argument for paying the players at his press conference after being there while Zak Zinter had surgery. Apologies to Alejandro Zuniga for not directly embedding this but it'll get cut off:
After watching Zak Zinter's injury on TV, Jim Harbaugh made another push for paying the players:
"Who could be against the players being compensated for what they do? At least even minimum wage. I mean, who could argue against that — when there’s injury or not. I mean, the emotional buildup watching it on TV: There wasn't a commercial that went by, a sporting event that was played all week that you didn't see those two teams and the buildup and the hype and the talk about players’ legacies and everything that could possibly be rolled into one game on the line. And then you see the amount of people that are benefiting financially from those players’ efforts out there. I wonder who could be against that? I ask other coaches to get on board, to use their platform and their voice for the student-athletes — not just football players, all student-athletes — to be sharing in this ever-increasing revenue. That was another thought that I had, and I just don't know who could be against that."
He said he'd be happy to take a paycut to get this done. The NCAA is going to send him to Bolivia now.
The football Gods continue to tell Nebraska to run triple option. Ye gods:
Here are the "unluckiest" teams. Apparently, you can take the Scott Frost out of Nebraska but you can't take the Nebraska out of the Scott Frost. Or something.

They have not forgiven Nebraska for hiring Bill Callahan, and will not until the Cornhusker QB runs for 1000 yards.
Interesting guys in the portal. A couple of names to keep an eye on:
- THOR GRIFFITH, an all-Ivy DT at Harvard who told Bruce Feldman he'd like to transfer to M or OSU. Griffith was #8 on Feldman's freaks list this year. PFF also loved him, issuing him an 89. I would hop on this ASAP; Michigan will lose Jenkins and Goode after this season and Griffith would slot right in as Yet Another Co-Starter At DT.
- Donaven McCulley, who led Indiana in receiving yards this year. 75 PFF grade, 6'5". I'm intrigued.
Etc.: Minter talks evolving third down strategy. Ross Dellenger on the possibility of a "great split" with football powers breaking away from the NCAA. Rittenger on five reasons Michigan can win the national championship. Most of the money bet on M-OSU was on OSU. Nice shirt.

I live in Cleveland, that exchange was hilarious on 92.3. For some context, Anthony Lima is an OSU grad, and has enjoyed his passive aggressive comments about us cheating immensely the past month. Keith Britton works at the station, and is a Michigan season ticket holder. They let Keith call in to fuck with Lima, which is why Ken Carman is laughing so hard.
Later that day Dustin Fox (former buckeye DB) has a show in the afternoon. To his credit, and I'm paraphrasing, he said:
I don't think the sign thing had to do with any of it, I think Michigan has kicked our ass the last 3 years. I think people using it to say Michigan really didn't win have a loser mentality. When asked to respond to Roman Wilson's remarks, he essentially said- sorry but it's true.

Further context:
The question that Keith called with that got him so worked up, and again I'm paraphrasing:
He asked Lima his thoughts using his own logic that Michigan cheated, and the previous two wins do not count.....Then why is he now using those games in his case against Ryan Day by saying he is 1-3 against Michigan? If those games didn't count, then he's only 1-1, you can't have it both ways.
November 29th, 2023 at 5:20 AM ^
.Yes, we can have it both ways.

It just completely blows my mind that they have latched on to "cheating" as the reason for their losses. OHIO STATE fans, complaining about cheating. Are you fucking serious? Can you imagine if there was an investigation into that program that found all of the receipts (so to speak) from the last 20 years? I know that everyone has some dirt on paying players, but talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
FWIW, not a single OSU fan (and there were several, as I was in the South endzone) around me on Saturday even mentioned Signgate it with any level of seriousness. Even over at 11W it seems to have moved more to the lunatic fringe.

Pdgo....
I watched the game in Amherst amougst about 150 buckeye fans at the VFW hall my OSU buddy rents for a watch party. He goes to EVERY OSU home game, bowl game and road game except one (ours) because he just KNOWS OSU fans are treated the same as Michigan fans are in Columbus (even though he's never been there).
Anyways so I'm sitting in this sea of red with my Michigan hoodie on when at halftime they do a 50-50 raffle with the prize being $500 for the winner. And I won that on Saturday putting the proverbial cherry on my Saturday sundae of fun. Needless the buckeye faithful were not happy about that or the game......it was glorious!
November 28th, 2023 at 2:51 PM ^
Fantastic.
My kids are pretty young so I watched the game at home. When I get too nervous I go out to watch the game on my deck and pace around outside. There were two houses on my street having watch parties. Anytime there was a positive play for OSU I could hear clear as day both parties yelling/cheering, it was annoying.
When Rod picked off that last pass I let out a yell that could only be rivaled by a mud covered Dutch holding up a burning torch and letting the Predator know that it was indeed on.
Then I pounded two nails into my wood siding and hung a michigan banner on the front of my house so everyone who left from those house parties had to drive by and see it on the way out.

Since MSU isn't listed as one of the top 25 unluckiest teams, I guess that confirms that they're just.....bad?
November 28th, 2023 at 1:14 PM ^
Well MSU should have been stuck with Mel Turner for another 4-5 years and instead got to hire an excellent coach from Oregon State because of a bizarre love triangle. So their luck factors is orders of magnitude greater than what this chart measures, it would seem.

They were lucky as hell to win 2 of their games, if anything. The rutgers game is the only one they could reasonably argue that they should have won.
November 28th, 2023 at 1:45 PM ^

For Nebraska, what really is the argument against returning to option football? Seems like a no-brainer to me.
November 28th, 2023 at 1:48 PM ^
Tbf their nobody QB from rural Nebraska was their leading rusher this year. I'm guessing they were banking on Jeff Sims not being the total disaster he was, which would have further helped.
More generally, it is definitely time for some teams to readopt the Denard/JT Barrett qb-run-first offenses. It's been long enough since they were in vogue that I think they could be effective again for the Nebraskas of the world.
November 28th, 2023 at 6:26 PM ^
Nah, run the full 1980's triple option that only passes to the TE twice a game.
November 28th, 2023 at 1:56 PM ^
Rhule should pay RichRod $200k more than his Jacksonville State contract and bring him in as his OC. You might get close to a 1,000 yard rusher at QB with his offensive philosophy but not go the full service academy route for your offensive philosophy. It actually would be a good compromise between Nebraska’s legacy and modern football.

Because Nebraska still imagines itself as a national contender with the right coaching hire, and nobody has been a national contender running an option offense since... well, Nebraska 30 years ago.
November 28th, 2023 at 4:56 PM ^
30 years ago is 1993....oh I see what you did there
November 28th, 2023 at 5:16 PM ^
They would need a qb who can run the option? Idk, even army recruits a 3* who can do it. Not just like any garbage QB can run the option.
November 28th, 2023 at 7:28 PM ^
Nebraska never had trouble finding option QBs. Frazier, Crouch, Frost…
That’s frankly a big reason why they should run it. Nebraska isn’t going to sign the next CJ Stroud or JJ McCarthy. But they can find an option QB.
November 28th, 2023 at 9:11 PM ^
Yeah, if they can't get Raiola's kid to show interest.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:17 AM ^
There are tons of competent passing QBs out there, though. If TCU, SMU, Texas Tech, Kansas, and Iowa State can find great QBs (and all have in recent years), there isn't any reason why Nebraska can't. I actually think it's more difficult to find a decent option QB, because any kid with a lick of passing talent is going to want to go to a school where he can throw the ball a little. Georgia Tech really struggled to recruit decent QBs when Paul Johnson was there because of this reason.
November 29th, 2023 at 9:52 AM ^
They hate QB's being able to walk later in life.
