Run defense was great. Pass defense felt pretty bad. At one point Haarberg was I think 9/11 at 10 ypa
September 30th, 2023 at 6:58 PM ^
Mostly dink passes, but yeah, pass defense has to tighten up. Two more explosive plays in the air.
September 30th, 2023 at 6:59 PM ^
Tighten up? We effectively shut out our first two BIG opponents. Minter is afire.
September 30th, 2023 at 7:03 PM ^
Pass defense has given up three explosive pass plays to teams that do not great receivers. That needs to be fixed.
September 30th, 2023 at 7:08 PM ^
Salvatore, at least someone else sees it. Our secondary is our weakness. A team like Washington would carve us up unless we get pressure
September 30th, 2023 at 7:28 PM ^
What also needs to be cleaned up is the DE drop back into coverage, needs to drift to center of field. The cb covering the guy has the outside and the opponent almost always goes inside , and we got burned twice.
October 1st, 2023 at 7:34 AM ^
It is definitely moderately alarming. I saw at least 2 times where Will Johnson had mediocre to poor coverage in man, which was surprising. And a fair bit of grass-covering by guys in zones
Hopefully we'll settle in and improve as the season wears on. We'll need the defense firing on all cylinders against PSU/Maryland/OSU to finish the regular season

I think all the big plays (and a few close incompletions that could’ve been big plays) were on slants. Linebacker/end drops weren’t very effective. Sainristil, Johnson and others were out of position trailing, and safeties were out of position or just whiffed on tackle attempts. Hopefully just shaking the rust off. Most of those players were very effective against those routes the last ~2 years

Michigan 2nd String Defense 🤝 Garbage Time Touchdowns
Top Team Problems.
September 30th, 2023 at 6:49 PM ^
Third string, really.
September 30th, 2023 at 6:52 PM ^
That was at least 4th string.
September 30th, 2023 at 7:20 PM ^
Front 7 yes. But Moore and Q. Johnson were still on there; the latter with a full whiff on that TD run
October 1st, 2023 at 10:26 AM ^
First world problems.
First team defense is allowing 2.6 points per game.
October 1st, 2023 at 11:29 AM ^
that .6 sticks in my craw.
October 1st, 2023 at 4:23 PM ^
Yeah, but their only playing about 2/3 of the game. Projecting over a full 60 minutes, that balloons to 4 ppg.
September 30th, 2023 at 6:48 PM ^
Starting D has given up 13 points in five games. Maybe 16? Results, baby.
September 30th, 2023 at 6:49 PM ^
They're good.
September 30th, 2023 at 6:54 PM ^
I think we might be good.
September 30th, 2023 at 6:55 PM ^
Almost perfect, another garbage TD late in the game but I'll take it. We got another INT and then scored a TD on that drive.
The starters get an A+ but overall an A. This unit is on fire. Hotter than the 95 degree heat in Lincoln.
September 30th, 2023 at 6:56 PM ^
Excellent. Nebraska has not been shutout at home since 1968. One big run against 3rd string with 4 minutes 30 seconds left. Great job men.
September 30th, 2023 at 6:58 PM ^
Other than 3 bad plays, it was total domination.
September 30th, 2023 at 6:58 PM ^
Secondary is the only concern. We don't want another TCU game
September 30th, 2023 at 7:33 PM ^
NEB is still a B1G team. They are going to have some completions. Equating those catches to TCU game just seems to be too much of an extrapolation. NEB QB is an unknown. He might turn out to be OK. Give him some props. Here is the good news. This offense can compensate for any long TDs this defense gives.
September 30th, 2023 at 9:36 PM ^
Haarberg was not throwing into tight windows. When Wimsett moved the ball through the air last week (first TD aside) it was because he was hitting tiny windows with insane catches. This...was not that.
October 1st, 2023 at 12:01 PM ^
Almost like the strategy was to key on runs and live w/ it if they managed to pick up a couple first downs through the air.
September 30th, 2023 at 6:58 PM ^
Over half of the Cornshuckers' yardage, including 3/4 of their rushing yardage was on 3 plays. The first string pass D had just two bad plays, but gave up no points. Great job.
September 30th, 2023 at 7:10 PM ^
Any gripes about the pass D should take into account the man games lost to injury so far. It’s been the hardest hit group by far. Once they get those reps and build chemistry it will be fine.
September 30th, 2023 at 7:05 PM ^
Was really hoping for the shutout.
Fire everyone!
September 30th, 2023 at 7:09 PM ^
Tighten up the crossing routes a little and it’s lights out for other offenses
September 30th, 2023 at 7:13 PM ^
Men against Boys.
Awesome for the good guys, embarassing for the Cornholes.
Love seeing McGregor develop into a stud. Been a long time coming after his injury in high school, great to see his hard work paying off.
Go Blue!!!
September 30th, 2023 at 7:29 PM ^
I love McGregor!!! He is going to be a force.
October 1st, 2023 at 7:18 AM ^
I would say he is a force now. He just needs to be on the field more.
September 30th, 2023 at 7:13 PM ^
ASS KICKING!!
September 30th, 2023 at 7:14 PM ^
I was getting a beer when Nebraska ripped off that TD. I'll tighten up my rotations by the time we play PSU. That's on me, team.
September 30th, 2023 at 10:09 PM ^
What type of beer? your answer will determine how many laps you’ll need to run at practice
September 30th, 2023 at 7:21 PM ^
The pass D appeared soft because they played more zone to keep the qb from running. Zone allows eyes in the backfield. I'm sure the D coaches will be able to coach it better as we go.
October 1st, 2023 at 8:45 AM ^
Exactly, they were trying to defend the option on short notice along with a running QB.
Extra eyeballs make sense.
September 30th, 2023 at 7:24 PM ^
YOWZA!
September 30th, 2023 at 7:40 PM ^
This team is relentless. They got speed in the D. They got too many new players and players who haven't played much. Good that we have a few more games to rep. We are good at stopping short yardages. That will be key in big games. Slants are not being defended that will. I saw at least two plays where they could have gotten lose. Hopefully, they figure out the issues before the break.
Glad there is time for them to get more reps and I think they will be a killer D by November. But today, they made NEB's life miserable and made key stops when they needed without their starting DT. Looking forward to October games.
September 30th, 2023 at 7:41 PM ^
Feels like a vibes based defense that bends but doesn’t break. It’s a bit difference in appearance but trust them to get a stop every time out. They give up yardage at times but they buckle down and get you to 4th down. They sure make you play football every down.
September 30th, 2023 at 8:05 PM ^
Holy Moly, can Kris Jenkins stuff the run. He's pretty good!
October 1st, 2023 at 1:11 PM ^
He's a'ight.
September 30th, 2023 at 8:20 PM ^
Clean up the crossers stuff, and this unit is elite
September 30th, 2023 at 8:20 PM ^
Is anyone slightly worried about Rod Moore? He seemed like he may have been at fault in that garbage time TD. But will wait for the UFR
September 30th, 2023 at 9:34 PM ^
Rod Moore is not himself compared to last year.
September 30th, 2023 at 8:28 PM ^
Clean up the crossers stuff, and this unit is elite
September 30th, 2023 at 8:36 PM ^
Lights out. Total destruction. QB got some completions, but it seems it's by design, dictated by off coverage, either to make the weaker opponent drive the field or to rep for more skilled teams -- most likely both honestly.
No one's running on this team.
A grade overall. Yeah, they scored......annoying, especially considering Moore and Q-Jo were back there. Also, the dropped slant was probably a TD, couldn't tell with the tight shot, but I think so. Plenty of games left to tighten some things before PSU, though. I think we'll be fine.
Well done....and an INT for the big fella.
September 30th, 2023 at 8:52 PM ^
Maybe I’m traumatized from TCU but the passing defense unnerves me. Defensive line looks good but the secondary is still iffy.
