Corum Running Out of Bounds?

Submitted by WalterWhite_88 on November 20th, 2022 at 4:59 PM

I'm sure some people will say this isn't worth a new thread, but anybody have any ideas why Corum purposely ran out of bounds on the long screen pass in the 1st quarter? I'd say there was a 50/50 shot that Corum avoids that desperate dive tackle that the Illini player makes and then goes for a TD to make the game 14-0. That decision to run out of bounds could have been costly if Michigan ends up losing. Was he gassed for some reason? Trying to avoid the tackle and play it safe to avoid potential injury?

If you’re not Blake Corum, you’re in no position to have a worthwhile idea “why” Blake took a step one way or another on any play Saturday or any other game.  Blake is a fierce genius playing RB.  EVERYTHING ELSE IS WASTED COMMENTARY.  Imagine his numbers this year if he had been allowed to play full games the beginning of the season.

Actually I had the same question. Naturally the announcers totally disregarded the fact that Corum essentially gave up on that run. Which is absolutely not like him. In hindsight, it seems like a sign that something was off with him before the play when he went down.

It was weird looking but there was a coming defender off the screen. Could he have gained a good 10 more at least, if not house it if he just jumps a bit and outruns/jukes the last guy? Yes.

My guess is that he knows he's likely going to have to play beyond all abandon & health to get the win next week so he was preserving himself.

But it did look weird live. I'm not going to refute that or come up with an excuse beyond him likely wanting to win and get out healthy.

He actually did that twice -- he did something very similar on the first run of the game, on the other sideline. On neither of those plays did I think he was likely to get more than 2-3 more yards by staying inbounds -- though, yeah, there was a chance at a quick move inside on the screen -- so it wasn't an indefensible decision by a kid expecting to get the ball 30+ times on the day to save the wear and tear on his body.

Still, I noticed it too -- since he's so famous for his toughness and commitment, both moves kinda surprised me.

At the end of the day, did either have a damned thing to do with the outcome of the game? Nah, of course not. Even when they happened I just shrugged. He's a stud. Stay healthy, stay in the game.

I noticed it and wondered the same thing when it happened. All I got is this, when a  guy is getting over 30 touches a game, they are not always going to fight for every yard just like a long distance runner is not going to go 100% speed through the race.

Saw a couple weird gestures by him yesterday including this one plus the fact that he just has not appeared to be running full speed for a while now.  I think there was another run yesterday where he was tackled and immediately motioned to the sideline that he needed to go out.  As others have said, he probably is dealing with some nagging aches, pains and bruises but not necessarily an injury.  It may be possible that he has something going on with his knee and it got hit just right to cause some god-aweful pain.  The replay showed barely any contact but it did look like the knee cap got brushed against just right.  Coming from someone who has had a clunky left knee his whole life, i can tell you that knees getting hit just right can hurt almost as bad as the kidney stones I have dealt with.  I just hope Blake is ok!!

I honestly took it like Michigan thought, especially after the first drive, that they were going to pulverize them and squeeze them to death all day long. At that point in time it looked as if Michigan would just get chunk after chunk and the idea was to bleed the clock and get out without injuries. Ronnie had a return where he started to juke and head up field and then he just laid down. I don’t think anyone expected the Blake injury and fumble which at least makes it 10-0 before the half and for Illinois to make it a game. JJ didn’t start running any until it was an actual game again. It ended up being way closer than anyone expected.

Obvious explanation is that he's been playing hurt for several weeks and doesn't have the speed he did earlier in the season. I've noticed this on several of the long runs he's broken recently--he doesn't have the breakaway speed anymore. I don't think it's because it's just slower; the most likely explanation is that he's nursing a small injury and it's affecting his speed. We've seen him limping around a couple of times during the past few games.

The guy has the heart of a lion. If he has an injury, he's not going to let on.

Heck, in game 1 of this year it appeared he’s lost a step or two since last year, or more accurately, since before his injury last year.  He obviously put on some weight this year so that’s bound to have an effect.  And at the same time, he’s obviously improved this year too, especially as a short yardage back we needed. It’s a give and take I guess.

I thought it was weird at the time, and the replay confirmed it.  Speculation is just that---speculative, meaning we don't know.  He may have been gassed and did not think he could make the remaining 50 yards w/o risking getting hit (w/o eyes in the back of his head, he does not know that the last guy with a serious chance just dove at his ankles and missed).  The several comments that he is a bit banged up also have merit---after all, his load this season is higher than last year (245 attempts vs. 144).  So going OOB to avoid a hit might well be the reason.  If he had been aware that the guy right behind him (# 7) was no longer a factor, he might have stayed with it---it almost looks like he steps out before the guy completes his diving missed tackle.

It is not a trivial issue---a 14-0 lead at that point changes the game a lot, IMO.

I mentioned it at the time. I actually thought he slowed up a couple times, and I wondered if he had an injury. Then he got injured. I just wasn't sure if he ran out of energy or whether he was gimpy. Anyway, I wasn't upset at him, but I thought he might have something after a couple of unusual end of runs. IDK.

If that's the play I remember, I wondered myself why he didn't cut it back for more yardage or a TD, actually. Not normally like him to shy away from contact.

I thought the same thing wondering why he wasn't trying to get the extra yardage. Almost looked like the players had been coached to not take any chances leading up to OSU. I think the coaches realize that it will be very difficult for two B10 schools to get into the playoffs especially with the bias of those making the decisions. Thus meaning the only way to get in would be by beating OSU. In other words, if protecting your investments with a chance to beat OSU meant possibly losing to Ilinois, it was still worth it.

Honestly, it looked like he might have gotten a tad winded and also thought the Illinois guy was going to swipe at him.  I presume it was just an unconscious response by him to step out, and you see guys do that at times for various reasons.

The camera angle didn't show two players that had the angle on him and the play cut off.  But whatever,  he just didn't want to score a TD so the game would stay close..
