I’ve seen him on film in a couple situations of teams I’ve coached against playing him. There is no doubt that Dexter is good, but they would not be a real threat for the loaded Division 1 state title without Cabana. He is a difference maker and vastly underrated by the services.
October 24th, 2022 at 9:49 PM ^
Dexter plays in Division 2
October 24th, 2022 at 9:53 PM ^
That’s how good he is
October 24th, 2022 at 10:01 PM ^
Okay I'm not going to pretend to understand how divisions and conferences work in MHSAA. But Dexter plays in the Southeast Conference Red which includes Huron, Pioneer and Saline which are all division 1 teams. So he's a division 2 player who racks up crazy stats mostly against division 1 teams?
October 24th, 2022 at 10:04 PM ^
They take all the teams with winning records essentially and then rank those teams by enrollment. So you can be different divisions for the playoffs depending on the year.
October 24th, 2022 at 10:09 PM ^
Correct, and unlike previous years, division placement is determined before the season starts
October 25th, 2022 at 1:21 AM ^
This was the method before the 2020 season, but it has changed. As XM said, (8) divisions are established before the season based on enrollment. The top 32 teams from each division advance to the playoffs based on a formula that includes a team's wins, opponents' sizes and opponents' wins.
Details are here: https://my.mhsaa.com/portals/0/documents/FB/Adjusted%20SOS%20Table.pdf
A winning record does not guarantee you a playoff spot and a losing record does not preclude you from the playoffs.
This year there are (7) 6-3 teams that did not qualify while (17) 4-5 teams and (4) teams with only 3 wins did qualify.

+1 confusing!
I remember this system from back in the day when I went to a crapload of high school games with my dad (who was an avid fan of HS sports and would travel all over the state to watch the best football and bball games each year). He knew the point system like the back of his hand. I just accepted it. LOL!!
October 25th, 2022 at 8:16 AM ^
They should just remove 1 week from the regular season and put all teams in the playoffs. Is this the only sport in MHSAA that doesn't allow all schools to play in the post season?
October 25th, 2022 at 12:09 PM ^
You'd need to add more than one week to let everyone in.
You'd also have to consider just how long you want the playoffs to be. A tournament that let everyone in would last about as long as the regular season.
October 25th, 2022 at 11:36 PM ^
No.
There were 491 teams that played 11-man football this season. 256 made the post season. One more week would include every team.
Now…the 75-0 first round blowouts match be another matter entirely. During the Covid season everyone was allowed in, and some of the 1st round scores were downright absurd.
October 25th, 2022 at 10:52 AM ^
We are one of the 4-5 teams to make it into the playoffs. But 5 of our losses were to Rochester Adams (6th overall in D1), West Bloomfield (3rd), Clarkston (5th), Saline (16th) and Utica Eisenhower (18th).
We have a rematch with Adams this weekend
October 25th, 2022 at 11:08 AM ^
Go Dragons!!!
OAA Red has to be one of the toughest divisions in the state.
4 D1 championships and 3 runners-up in the last 8 years, including the EPIC 3-2 victory by Clarkston over W. Bloomfield in 2017.
October 25th, 2022 at 1:10 PM ^
short answer. conferences can have both Div 1 and Div 2 teams in it.
October 26th, 2022 at 8:20 PM ^
I think the original question was concerning conferences and the regular season. Everyone just jumped immediately to the playoff system because it's complicated and changed recently.
October 25th, 2022 at 8:21 AM ^
My bad on that one. It's even worse because my team is Division 2 and could face Dexter in the semifinals.
October 25th, 2022 at 11:26 AM ^
Same. You're probably in our bracket!
October 24th, 2022 at 9:39 PM ^
Will he be a RB or slot at the next level?
October 24th, 2022 at 9:53 PM ^
Considering that he’s Hart’s guy, I’d imagine they primarily see him as a RB. But much like Donovan, they probably see a weapon that can split out and be a receiving threat as well.
October 25th, 2022 at 8:18 AM ^
I think he's a slot due to size.
He's basically Sam McGuffie minus 15-20 pounds.
October 25th, 2022 at 8:55 AM ^
McGuffie was listed at 6-1, 188
Cabana is listed at 5-11 to 6-0 and 180
Essentially the same size
October 25th, 2022 at 1:52 PM ^
McGuffie was 5'10", listed at 188 when recruited, and was 200lbs at the NFL combine
I'm 6', 160lbs... and I've stood within a few feet of Cabana. He's built a lot like me.
He's a legit 6' - and I'd guess about 170, and looks like he'll never get above maybe the low 180's.
October 25th, 2022 at 2:34 PM ^
So sort of like everyone here who "stood next to" Mike Hart, and swore up and down he DEFINITELY wasn't 5'9"? And then he went to the combine and measured in just over 5'9"?
October 25th, 2022 at 10:24 AM ^
McGuffie without the hurdling and flipping over fools. I think Fred Jackson would call him a McGuffie/Breaston combo except faster.
October 25th, 2022 at 8:26 AM ^
He’s going to be a RB. Before the season he was up to 185-190 and he’ll put on more weight once he gets to college
October 25th, 2022 at 9:38 AM ^
That frame isn't putting on much more weight.
I would be shocked if he ever touches 200lbs.
October 25th, 2022 at 10:37 AM ^
Not saying he's ever going to be Corum sized, but Cabana at 195-200 is more than serviceable
October 25th, 2022 at 1:53 PM ^
"Before the season he was up to 185-190"
That weight number is a bigger lie than basketball roster heights. He's about 170.
October 24th, 2022 at 9:46 PM ^
UM got a steal here. Great scouting by us.
October 25th, 2022 at 8:24 AM ^
October 25th, 2022 at 8:37 AM ^
CJ Carr agrees.
October 24th, 2022 at 10:09 PM ^
I learned my lesson with Kevin Grady, Derrick Green, and Sam McGuffie. Cabana looks to me more like a Drew Dileo type of player to me.
October 24th, 2022 at 10:33 PM ^
Not sure I follow - Grady and Green were large moosebacks IIRC, McGuffie was an electric, spin button maven. The first two were 5*s, can't remember on Sam. But Cole is underrated if anything, and a way different player than any of the three.
Cabana is more in the mold of Edwards, and that's a much better comp/realistic expectation.
October 24th, 2022 at 10:44 PM ^
Edwards is NOT a realistic expectation or comparison.
October 25th, 2022 at 12:15 AM ^
Because Edwards was a 5*? Speedster running back first with explosive burst and receiving chops/3rd down back but not realistic comparison or expectation? Stylistically or talent level? No snark, just asking your perspective
October 25th, 2022 at 7:08 AM ^
Because white guys can only be compared with other white guys, duh.
Personally I see a lot of Mike Alstott in him. And Wes Welker. Maybe Larry Bird.
October 25th, 2022 at 8:16 AM ^
Mike Alstott? LMAO!!! Even with snark that's a not a name I'd associate with Cabana!
October 25th, 2022 at 8:45 AM ^
But Larry Bird on the other hand, totally.
October 25th, 2022 at 9:00 AM ^
Hey Sheldon, your sarcasm meter is broken again.
October 25th, 2022 at 12:14 PM ^
That woosh you just heard is the sound of the joke going over your head
October 25th, 2022 at 10:16 AM ^
Plays with a lot of grit too
October 25th, 2022 at 8:20 AM ^
Because Donovan Edwards was 5-11", 190lbs with a frame to add weight and Cabana is 6' and about 170lbs and looks unlikely to add significant weight.
October 25th, 2022 at 8:27 AM ^
Cabana said he was 185 before the season started and unlikely to add weight based on what?
October 25th, 2022 at 1:56 PM ^
1) He's lying (see: basketball roster heights, pro day 40 times)
2) I've been within a few feet of the dude - he's THIN, and built just like me.
Maybe I'm wrong - but I suspect he tops out around 180-185 at 6' tall.
October 25th, 2022 at 9:32 AM ^
Because edwards was college ready his freshman season. Cole is playing in division 2 and needs to add significant weight. I highly doubt he is 185. And if that is 185 he needs to get to 200 because he is thin.
October 25th, 2022 at 1:57 PM ^
I think the biggest issue - watching half the highlights which are probably 30% of his yards for the year - it’s all speed mismatches where he’s not touched at all. Yes speed is good. But how does he cut? Can’t tell if he’s got power to break tackles.
could be good, but highlights aren’t showing making cuts that make people miss
October 24th, 2022 at 10:57 PM ^
Sam was 6*
October 25th, 2022 at 12:17 AM ^
I recall one particular hurdle that I made a bunch of buddies watch while I imagined Heisman(s). It was when I first started following recruiting so in my mind, it's was at least a 6*!
