Ed Cooley staying at Providence
now confirmed by cooley himself:

Providence College President Reverend Brian J. Shanley, O.P. and Vice President/Athletics Director Bob Driscoll announced today that Ed Cooleyhas agreed to a multi-year contract extension to remain head coach of the men's basketball program. As a result, Cooley has withdrawn his name from consideration in the job search at the University of Michigan.
"While it's very flattering to be considered for other head coaching jobs, after talking with my family I have decided to remain in my hometown of Providence," Cooley said.
Shocking. Not that Cooley is staying, Providence is a great school and the beers at Bradley Cafe are always ice cold. However, more concerning was PC releasing the name of the President. A New England Catholic college having a President with the last name Shanley? WOW!
Cue the "Warde couldn't even pull a guy away from Providence!" outrage... even though hardly anyone here wanted said guy anyway.
Juwan Howard or bust? Or is LaVall Jordan a serious candidate?
Reading between the lines here... it's entirely possible Michigan told Cooley he's out because they have someone else locked in. (Please be Juwan)
Like Frank Martin?
Well considering Warde flew to Miami after interviewing Cooley, it does sound like that's the case. Also, now Warde can tell Juan, "you had me at hello," and cue the Brian post.
Duplicate. Yay
Cooley played it perfectly either way, he knew he wouldn't be a popular choice at Michigan, so he met with his buddy Warde and worked it for an extension and a raise at Providence. He should pay that student reporter a nice commission.
They should call that move the "Mike Brey".
Don't jinx it!
I'm just sayin', we can retire the muppets and trot out Cabbage Patchin' Juwan.
Looks like he got that contract extension. Funny how that works. Great news and this should be wrapped up tonight.
Wrap it up Warde! Take JH to a nice Cuban dinner, offer the man the gig...with Yak and Saddi attached to it
"How to Get a Raise 101" - Professor Ed Cooley
Leaking the $6 million/year contract to a student reporter who doesn't know any better is from Get a Raise 201 give the man some credit.
It's the whole "if you found it out they wanted you to" thing that the kid, bless his heart, didn't realize.
Dude, that was a master class in realizing your self worth.
but what does the student play by play guy say? how about counter strike guy?
I’m sure he’s a happy pawn bc his coach gets to stay at Providence
Cooley played the kid like a fiddle.
The kid should ask for a student manager position at $100K per year. He earned it.
Boom goes the dynamite.
It makes the barstool guy that stole the kid’s scoop then deny it look like an even bigger tool.
Praise the gods
That can't be right, I was just told he was going to be hired in part of a massive conspiracy headed by our bumbling and incompetent athletic director??
Looks like AD Warde has been a member of the blog since 6/8/18.

POSBANG
We gon shock the world!!!
Maizen to the thread please. Paging Maizen.
Warde got his buddy Ed Cooley a raise by abusing his position at Michigan. All the Warde apologists need to see themselves out. Get lost
Okay
What exactly is your point?
The point is Maizen is creating many many different accounts to annoy all of us to hell...
I don't think this is Maizen.
Good lord you're insufferable.
He interviewed someone. It probably wasn't a "real" interview in the sense an offer was going out yesterday, but I'm also certain that if Howard and Yak bombed he'd be in the running. If you think that rises to an abuse of position, you're just being needlessly obtuse because it robs you of the ability to bitch about Warde and his weight/intelligence.
It probably wasn't a "real" interview in the sense an offer was going out yesterday,
Then why is he wasting his time? We are losing recruits, our assistant coaches are interviewing elsewhere, and our AD is fake interviewing guys?
His candidate list is already embarrassing in its lack of proven candidates and he decides to waste an entire day on a guy just to help him get a raise with his current employer? Or for any other reason?
That's an incredibly stupid waste of time.
I'm also certain that if Howard and Yak bombed he'd be in the running.
But he very much should not be. Cooley is perfect for where he is. He is an exceedingly mediocre coach that has no business even dreaming of becoming the UM coach. He would get ass blasted by Izzo and Painter and the rest of the B1G. He can't win the Big East - why in the world would anyone want him here.
And this all falls at the feet of Warde, as the AD. He was not prepared for the real possibility that JB was going to leave, even though he had a year heads up. Then he left for vacation when JB told him he was interviewing again.
Warde has failed the program and the team. He is a dogshit AD.
Wow. Dog shit AD? He's not headed for the AD HoF, but he certainly hasn't failed the program yet by any measure. However, the fact that the Cooley got an interview as a finalist is very surprising and does make me wonder how in the heck he got that far aside his connections to the search firm.
My opinion of him stems from the fact that he knew JB was interviewing for a new job over a year ago and he did nothing to prepare.
Then when JB interviewed again, Warde went on vacation.
IMO, these are not the behaviors of a competent boss that is at the top of the profession and is worth $700k salary.
You are talking out of your ass. I know for a fact that Warde was so relieved to see JB coming back last year and stating that he plans to finish his career here. You think Warde was looking forward to all the headache that he has had to suffer because of this? I mentioned it in another post that I emailed Warde and wished him luck in hiring the next BB coach (I worked with him at UConn). He basically replied that JB did not give him even the chance to ask him to stay at least one more year so the timing would be better. JB wanted to leave, period.
You think Warde was looking forward to all the headache that he has had to suffer because of this?
No and I never made that claim that he was looking forward to JB leaving
You are talking out of your ass.
Yah, no shit Sherlock. I am just reading the tea leaves and the little bits of what we know and making my assumptions and sharing them on a fan site message board where 99.99% of us share our opinions. We are all talking out of our ass.
I mentioned it in another post that I emailed Warde and wished him luck in hiring the next BB coach (I worked with him at UConn).
Even if that is true - cool. Good for you.
He basically replied that JB did not give him even the chance to ask him to stay at least one more year so the timing would be better.
I don't believe this for a single second.
JB wanted to leave, period.
Yah - exactly dude. That was my entire point. People who interview for new jobs, while currently employed, typically want to leave their current job. JB made it publicly obvious he would be leaving sooner or later and Warde sat on his ass and didn't prepare. Even if JB came back last year and said "Thanks for the extension. I will be here forever," a halfway intelligent boss would still quietly prepare for the very real possibility of his employee to change his mind and leave.
Searching for and interviewing candidates is not a waste of time. Beilein left 8 days ago. This is not an exceptionally long time by any standard, and given the challenges in finding good candidates in this time, rushing into something would be a mistake.
You don't know what you're talking about and you're looking for reasons to be angry.
Not being snarky at all here
Help me understand how (if as the OP stated) that Cooley wasn't a "real" candidate anyway and the interview wasn't "real."
If we are going to agree on that point - that it wasn't real - how is that not a waste of Warde's time?
We know that 1 recruit already left and our D Coordinator is interviewing elsewhere already. It would seem that Warde should only be interviewing real candidates - especially if Juwan is "the guy" then why wasn't he interviewed before Cooley?
I never said he wasn't a "real" candidate, only that the interview wasn't likely to lead to an offer with Howard and possibly Yaklich still coming up. That's called due diligence. My guess is Howard is at the top and then it's Yak and Cooley. If Howard bombs, then Cooley was still in the running.
It's been 8 fucking days since Beilein left, and while I know you like to keep bringing up how Warde should have had a massive list of candidates and force people at other jobs to interview with him for UM and switch, he was put in a terrible spot by Beilein's departure when he did. I think he's doing a pretty decent job all things considered; he's got a decent HC, a hot commodity in the NBA with close ties to the University, and a top-notch assistant coach on the docket. Those are decent options.
I never said he wasn't a "real" candidate, only that the interview wasn't likely to lead to an offer
Okay, that makes sense. I still stand by the fact that you don't interview someone that has a crappy resume and isn't a viable option for the opening. You wouldn't hire a sociologist for an engineering role. IMO Cooley wasn't a viable candidate and shouldn't have been interviewed.
I know you like to keep bringing up how Warde should have had a massive list of candidates and force people at other jobs to interview with him for UM
I am just going by what JB did and said a year ago and what Warde did and said in the time since. It seems to me that he could have been 3 or 4 steps ahead 8 days ago, had he taken JB more seriously a year ago. Yes, he gave him a contract extension, but JB still was interviewing. What we know publicly, Warde appeared unprepared.
As far as forcing people to interview, that's disingenuous to my points. Does he have an approved max he can offer a coach? Is it #1/Top 3/Top 5 paid coach money? If so, did he call up all the "home run" guys and discuss the salary and gauge interest? I haven't heard he did.
From my perception, it appears he settled almost immediately for these 3rd and 4th tier guys.
he was put in a terrible spot by Beilein's departure when he did.
I agree 100%. JB really screwed over the program he seemingly loved and built with his own 2 hands. Kind of a shitty thing to do.
think he's doing a pretty decent job all things considered; he's got a decent HC, a hot commodity in the NBA with close ties to the University, and a top-notch assistant coach on the docket. Those are decent options.
I don't agree with Cooley being a decent HC candidate but can definitely agree with the other 2. That interview list still feels far too small for the program that UM has become in the last decade.
It was a real interview. It is generally a practice of businesses and sports franchises to interview multiple candidates for positions. Not every interview is going to result in a job, but they do matter--if they didn't, people wouldn't have interviews.
As Bronx explains, the fact that it didn't result in an offer doesn't make it "fake." An offer before you've interviewed your candidates is silly. If Howard and/or Yak are legit candidates you don't extend an offer during the interview.
