Former MBB Jon Horford to run for State Representative

Submitted by UMfan21 on January 4th, 2022 at 11:31 AM

You may remember Horford as a center on Beilein's earlier teams.  Younger brother of AL Horford, he was always rather stoic and introspective through our NCAA run.

He is now running for state representative.  Hopefully he wins his election and makes a positive difference for all Michiganders.

Interesting.  I went to high school with a state rep that I believe currently resides in this new district.  It will be interesting to see if he suddenly develops a desire to move further north.

I remember hearing Horford on a podcast a couple years ago and being somewhat disappointed (he mocked Beilein for being religious and was incredibly cynical about, well, everything), but I certainly wish him well as a representative of the university and now potentially state. I enjoy seeing athletes step up like this.

I personally choose not to belittle anyone’s beliefs regardless of my opinion on the veracity of them. Nobody, in my opinion, should be so strongly bound to their worldviews that they go as far as to mock those who have different ones. Extremism of any kind obviously notwithstanding. I’m an atheist Gen Z’er myself (Well, ‘98 so right on the border), but I don’t think the decency it takes to be understanding of different people, cultures, and ideas are tied to any kind of generational thing. And even if it was, I thought that the stereotype is supposed to be that us youngins are more open minded about differences lol.

I just listened to it, and this is not a fair characterization at all of what he said. He criticized that they had team meetings with a pastor and he was called out as not being a team player by Donovan because he wasn't religious, and he had to meet a pastor twice a week to get reinstated to the team (because he talked to another player on the bench during a game).

He actually mocked Donovan at Florida for the religious stuff. He wasn't happy with Beilein over McGary playing in front of him when Horford felt McGary wasn't ready and wasn't held to the same standards as everyone else on the team - and then felt slighted when Beilein never addressed the issue with him. But the religious stuff he talked about with Stu on the podcast was Donovan/UF.

His older brother, Al Horford, has been playing in the NBA since 2007. His father, Tito Horford, also played professionally between 1988 and 1994. His younger brother, Josh, is a standout on the Grand Ledge High School team.

That's quite an age range - Al is 35 and Josh is in high school.

It's always sad when a former UM starter's life falls apart and they sink to incredible lows, like drug addiction or crime or elective office...

IIRC, he was rather thin-skinned when it came to criticism during his time at UofM. Not a great trait for a politician...or maybe it is these days...who knows anymore.
