Former MBB Jon Horford to run for State Representative
You may remember Horford as a center on Beilein's earlier teams. Younger brother of AL Horford, he was always rather stoic and introspective through our NCAA run.
He is now running for state representative. Hopefully he wins his election and makes a positive difference for all Michiganders.

Interesting. I went to high school with a state rep that I believe currently resides in this new district. It will be interesting to see if he suddenly develops a desire to move further north.

Just noticed your avatar. My boss is from London and a huge fan so I’ve been casually following a few years. Go Fulham!
January 4th, 2022 at 2:30 PM ^
Fulham? Step out from under the bosses thumb and root for a real west London team. And I ain't talking AFC Richmond.
Though I do love me some:

Wow, six months of top flight time after 75 years away and Brentford fans get sporty....

And you, my friend, are stuck with Shad Kahn.

I remember hearing Horford on a podcast a couple years ago and being somewhat disappointed (he mocked Beilein for being religious and was incredibly cynical about, well, everything), but I certainly wish him well as a representative of the university and now potentially state. I enjoy seeing athletes step up like this.

Looks like he is being chosen to be a politician by the higher ups in the party, I would imagine he one day runs for US house or Senate.
January 4th, 2022 at 11:50 AM ^
He was so disappointing on the Not Mainstream podcast with Stu. Kinda made me feel bad this was the lens he views life with.
January 4th, 2022 at 12:00 PM ^
That's sad to hear. I never heard those interviews, and always had a positive view of Horford.
January 4th, 2022 at 2:37 PM ^
a millennial/gen z criticizing religion and being cynical? Oh my... *clutches pearls*
/s
Frankly, as a fellow millennial, I can relate to both of those characteristics. Better than believing in fairytales and thinking the world is all roses. Just IMO of course.

I personally choose not to belittle anyone’s beliefs regardless of my opinion on the veracity of them. Nobody, in my opinion, should be so strongly bound to their worldviews that they go as far as to mock those who have different ones. Extremism of any kind obviously notwithstanding. I’m an atheist Gen Z’er myself (Well, ‘98 so right on the border), but I don’t think the decency it takes to be understanding of different people, cultures, and ideas are tied to any kind of generational thing. And even if it was, I thought that the stereotype is supposed to be that us youngins are more open minded about differences lol.

I just listened to it, and this is not a fair characterization at all of what he said. He criticized that they had team meetings with a pastor and he was called out as not being a team player by Donovan because he wasn't religious, and he had to meet a pastor twice a week to get reinstated to the team (because he talked to another player on the bench during a game).

He actually mocked Donovan at Florida for the religious stuff. He wasn't happy with Beilein over McGary playing in front of him when Horford felt McGary wasn't ready and wasn't held to the same standards as everyone else on the team - and then felt slighted when Beilein never addressed the issue with him. But the religious stuff he talked about with Stu on the podcast was Donovan/UF.

I found that old thread and listened to snippets of the episode for the first time. Couldn’t take more than 10min it was so bad. Both him and Stu sound like they are less mature than high schoolers. Hope they’ve grown since then, especially if Jon is going into government…
January 4th, 2022 at 4:28 PM ^
The funny part is they make fun of other teammates (from their pro teams in particular) for being immature.
January 4th, 2022 at 3:39 PM ^
I don’t think the Douglass one is the one I’m thinking of. I believe it was with a beat writer (I thought Nick Baumgardner or BQ). I’m trying to find it now, but coming up short. You may be correct that I’m splitting one thing into two.

This is what I listened to:

Around the 15:00 mark. It goes for like 4 minutes.

It sounds like he's running as another worthless Democrat.

Thanks for your opinion.

Stay clear of that MGoBoard "no politics" rule please.

Aww, look at the little snowflake who just can’t help himself. You’re fucking pathetic

Imagine unironically calling people “snowflake” in 2022, grow the fuck up

You have no idea whether my post was ironic or not, but nice try champ. Imagine making your username ‘overtaking ass’ in 2022. Try harder and grow the fuck up

Let me now tell you all my political beliefs...
January 4th, 2022 at 2:00 PM ^
Seems like you could be doing a better job of indicating yours than the OP does in his. You have to go to the link to even get a hint of Horford's politics. And a former M athlete running for office is totally fit subject matter for this forum.
January 4th, 2022 at 9:53 PM ^
I'll assume since your ellipsis leads to nothing that you believe in nothing. Nihilist! Fuck me. I mean, say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, but at least it's an ethos.

Will Mitch McGary be his political consultant?

Only if he is looking for more Marijuana legalization legislature.

His older brother, Al Horford, has been playing in the NBA since 2007. His father, Tito Horford, also played professionally between 1988 and 1994. His younger brother, Josh, is a standout on the Grand Ledge High School team.
That's quite an age range - Al is 35 and Josh is in high school.
January 4th, 2022 at 1:13 PM ^
Josh is his middle name. His actual first name is "SURPRISE!!!!!"
January 4th, 2022 at 1:29 PM ^
Seems like Al has been in the NBA since like 1998

Tito is A MAN!

It's always sad when a former UM starter's life falls apart and they sink to incredible lows, like drug addiction or crime or elective office...
January 4th, 2022 at 12:36 PM ^
Ha! I know you are maybe being sarcastic, but I was thinking the same thing. I tell my wife, I will be a disappointed father if any of my children become politicians.
January 4th, 2022 at 12:20 PM ^
IIRC, he was rather thin-skinned when it came to criticism during his time at UofM. Not a great trait for a politician...or maybe it is these days...who knows anymore.
January 4th, 2022 at 1:58 PM ^
Not sure if he was or wasn’t, but he was also like 20 years old
January 4th, 2022 at 12:23 PM ^
He’d be a major upgrade over our current representatives, but then again, so would Forrest Gump.
January 4th, 2022 at 1:24 PM ^
My girlfriend introduced the word "kakistocracy" to me today. Her screenshot said "What word means government by hamsters?" I feel like I could be persuaded to that form of government.
January 4th, 2022 at 2:37 PM ^
You already have it:
kakistocracy...government by the least suitable or competent citizens of a state.
