DL Coach Greg Scruggs Resigns
Greg Scruggs has resigned, effective immediately.
Bummer, but at least it didn't drag out.

Larry Johnson. Just to eff with them.
Was thinking this, too, because it would be hilarious. Then I checked and he’s over 70 years old, so he can stay right where he is.
I heard the guys at slohio are looking to get out.
Sean Spencer.... Coach Chaos.... He's at TA&M, but he and Campbell are buds, maybe we can pull him out of Tx.

Probably for the best. This guy needs help.
March 21st, 2024 at 11:43 AM ^
Hope he gets to rehab asap.
March 21st, 2024 at 11:46 AM ^
We have had some super short coaching stints over the last several years - this was close to the shortest. I hope he learns and grows from this.

Nothing will beat Dan Enos being here for 2 weeks before leaving to go to Bama
March 21st, 2024 at 11:52 AM ^
Enos at least got us Sherrone Moore, so that was a high impact 2 weeks!
March 21st, 2024 at 12:10 PM ^
Did Schemmy even last a week?
March 21st, 2024 at 12:36 PM ^
Bob Shoop?
March 21st, 2024 at 12:56 PM ^
This is a trick answer because Shoop was never here.
How long was Mo Linguist here for?
No turmoil in hiring and retaining UM football coaches and staff.
Just so quiet and boring.

Whether this was a forced choice resignation or a firing recast as a resignation, it bodes well for Sherrone's leadership and management style. Clear values and a willingness to take action in support of those values is exactly what we want. I'm confident that we will find a great new DL coach soon enough. Onward and Go Blue!

Agreed. If the reports I've been seeing are true he blew over double the legal limit so he was very drunk and behind the wheel. From the outset of this I said I'm glad Moore suspended pending the results of the arrest - a tiny bit over and cooperative I'd be ok with a suspension of some sort and reinstatement under certain conditions.
But double the limit? The man's gotta go - it sucks but I'm glad this happened fast.
March 21st, 2024 at 12:41 PM ^
Glad no one got hurt, but this guy was a mess…his departure is good for the team in the long run
and its really his third DUI, though one was plead to a non-alcohol offense and the other is outside the 7 yr window. dude has a long-standing problem.
and why he didn't get a ride, get a cab, get an uber, turn to the guy next to him at the bar and say, 'hey, i'm a former NFL guy and a new michigan coach, can you get me home?"
* thank you *
Yes, it was his third strike and Scruggs was "less than truthful" about his .16 BAC.
"According to an incident report released by the Ann Arbor Police Department, an officer observed Scruggs’ vehicle stopped at an intersection with its hazard lights on shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday. Scruggs told the officer he had two drinks at the Chop House, an Ann Arbor restaurant, before leaving at approximately 11:30 p.m. Scruggs told the officer he then stopped at the Pretzel Bell but did not have anything additional to drink. Scruggs told the officer he’d recently moved to Ann Arbor and didn’t know where State Street and Main Street were, according to the police report. Scruggs also told the officer he’d been working late and was tired. The officer administered field sobriety tests and measured Scruggs’ blood-alcohol content at 0.16 and 0.17, double the legal limit in Michigan."
Sorry. But he had to go.
Why didn't he get a ride? Alcoholics are most often losers who only think of themselves.
When was the 2nd DUI? I read (here on the Blog) about the first one 7+ years ago but when/where did you discover that there was another before this one?
He had one in college, then one in his first or second year in the NFL which was dropped to reckless driving in a plea deal
Yeah, glad the three-week vetting process and initial guidelines were so effective.

Sucks but probably the right thing to do.
March 21st, 2024 at 11:50 AM ^
Hopefully for the better. Maybe Wink can bring someone in. Does anyone know if we had other candidates rumored for the position before he was hired?
March 21st, 2024 at 11:51 AM ^
I was fine keeping him as long as he wasn’t allowed to drive ever again. Bikes and legs work well.
March 21st, 2024 at 12:45 PM ^
You can get a DUI on a bike
Soft
True though
Really?! Asking for a friend...
Not in Michigan.
A human powered bike is specifically defined as NOT a vehicle in Michigan law.
MCL 257.625 -
(1) A person, whether licensed or not, shall not operate a vehicle on a highway or other place open to the general public or generally accessible to motor vehicles, including an area designated for the parking of vehicles, within this state if the person is operating while intoxicated.
257.79 “Vehicle” defined.
"Vehicle" means every device in, upon, or by which any person or property is or may be transported or drawn upon a highway, except devices exclusively moved by human power or used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks
Didn't know this, but I do know that in Ohio you can get a DUI on a riding lawn mower...
https://archive.triblive.com/news/ohio-drunken-driving-law-includes-mowers/
Whoa whoa whoa, time out for a second- the exception is for human-powered vehicles, or a device used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks- you can operate a train while drunk?
have no fear. there is a whole 'nother group of statutes, federal and state, that make railroading while drunk a very serious matter.
March 21st, 2024 at 11:53 PM ^
That's what I figured, XM, but it did seem like a specific enough carveout that it made me raise an eyebrow.
You can't get an OWI.... But on a bike - public drunkenness, drunk & disorderly, etc. still exist.
some call that: 'friday night'
No. That would require trusting him at his word.
Can't do it! (cue Mike Singletary)

Yikes. He was the position coach hire I was most excited about.
March 21st, 2024 at 12:42 PM ^
Im sure he isn’t the last hire we change our opinion on for better or worse
March 21st, 2024 at 11:51 AM ^
That sucks. Dude seemed like a good hire but he messed it all up. Honestly great job by Sherrone to make a one day story a one hour story by immediately suspending him.
Hopefully he's got some other connections ready to go. I would expect that - like luring Wink - you're gonna be able to go to a lot of DL coaches and just show them a picture of Moore, Graham, Grant, and Stewart and you'll get a lot of interest
March 21st, 2024 at 11:52 AM ^
What a debacle. He was a very promising hire. Hope he gets the help he needs
March 21st, 2024 at 11:55 AM ^
Sherrone Moore has been doing a great job so far finding assistant coaches that (with the help of contributors to this blog and people like Sam Webb) we can get excited about. Here's betting he'll do that again with the next hire.

Dumb people everywhere. Take a taxi!!
March 21st, 2024 at 12:14 PM ^
There's no excuse with all the ride share apps these days. You get one mulligan. 3 incidents is a problem.
March 21st, 2024 at 12:21 PM ^
Not that there should be an excuse ever - but ride share apps are getting banned in a lot of cities unfortunately, and even in places they aren't banned (the vast majority of the country still) the difficulty in getting a driver is wayyyyy harder than it was pre-pandemic.
For example, I live in arguably the busiest part of Orange County near SNA, and there are exactly 3 Ubers/Lyfts within 2 miles of me (all of them circling the airport).
Oh well though, hope they find another coach to fill his position in short order. Hate that it happened during this time of year especially.
This person has an illness, and this was likely a relapse in his recovery.
That sort of thing transcends what seems like common sense to everyone else.
Yes, he does have an illness, but that isn't an excuse for drunk driving in this day and age.
