DL Coach Greg Scruggs Resigns
Greg Scruggs has resigned, effective immediately.
Bummer, but at least it didn't drag out.

He'd have been better off sticking with the passenger side of his best friend's ride.

Now this, my friends, is the hard hitting analysis I come to mgoblog for

A Scruggs is a guy who got an OWI no no
More like a Scruggs is a guy who thinks he's fine [to drive]...

His BAC was twice the legal limit. He's fortunate he didn't injure or kill somebody.

I remember when Alex Boone was so drunk he passed out behind the wheel and smashed into a parked car on campus. Sweater vest, beacon of morals, suspended him for Northern Illinois week 1. That's what I hated the most about Tressel, aside from kicking our ass, he was such a fraud.

"he was such a fraud"
All that "Senator Tressel" nonsense...
Come now, that's nothing if not perfectly on-brand for actual literal senators
The story I read almost sounds like this happened before he had a chance to get moving.

Damn shame for everyone involved. Moore made a great hire the fanbase was excited about. Young guy with pro experience and probably translate that into a great recruiter. I thought there were really good things on the horizon for this guy. Cutting ties was definitely the right way to go, but no one wins in a situation like this. Hope he gets the help he needs and finds his way back to the coaching ranks after he does.

*seemed* promising when we had incomplete information
I hope he ends up in jail for getting behind the wheel that drunk. Fuck that guy.

How was it a great hire when dude already had 2 DUIs on record? Sure he didn't get charged for the second one but fact is he was driving drunk. 2 is enough to know someone has really poor judgement and in my experience that's not something most people grow out of.

May be too “out there” but I saw that OSU hired that DL/ pass rush guru that was at MSU for a season before bolting to the Seahawks. He is not an on on-field coach for OSU so it would be an upgrade to him.
i don’t know his on-field coaching experience but he had a rep as a dynamite recruiter as many NFL types - including Rashan Gary still came in to work with him in the offseason while he was at MSU.
—Side note this new autocorrect/ autocomplete on Apple is awful. I had to edit this SIX times to catch all the changes to my typing.

Let me know when you figure out how it works... Drives me nuts!
Turn "auto correct" off in settings so that you get prompted with correctly spelled words.
Pass.
A friend of mine is loosely connected to the MSU program and from what he’s told me, the guy was regularly late to work/meetings. His strength is working 1-on-1 with guys to develop their skillsets, but struggled in the team setting, with film study, and installing the scheme. The other side of that is his strength lies entirely as a pass rush specialist. So you’re not even encompassing the whole role of a DL.
It’s third hand information so who knows, but it’s probably pretty telling that he’s in an off-field role at OSU and no longer in the NFL or a position coach elsewhere in college.
What is interesting to me is that because he’s not in a countable coaching role, he’s not actually allowed instruction time with players. So while on staff at OSU, he’s not allowed to train OSU’s DL.

Fast, decisive action and clearly the right move. Best outcome here really.
As far as Scruggs, I hope he gets the help he clearly needs.

I just looked it up and he's married with two kids. Can you imagine trying to explain to your wife exactly why you were out drinking at 3:00am and now you've lost your job? What if they sold their house in Wisconsin and were just getting settled in Ann Arbor?
Man that would be really, really tough.
You think she was just completely unaware that her husband is an alcoholic?
Not likely.
Agreed. There's no way this is a shock to her.
Other then the paychecks stopping

While it's hard to take many positives from this, Sherrone took a one-day story and made it.... a one-day story. And you all have been around long enough to know to not take that for granted at all.

Had to happen. Good on Scruggs for doing the right thing after doing the wrong thing.
March 21st, 2024 at 12:56 PM ^
You know what, I'm happy for this result. It may seem harsh (assuming this was forced), but it's the right move for Moore and the program. Moore needs to establish a "no nonsense" policy and he needs to do it early. It will reverberate throughout the program and will pay major dividends in the long run.

Scruggs might've left Michigan's football coaching staff Flat(t). Hope it won't result in a serious breakdown.
Michigan is something else.
sigh. kinda sucks losing out on someone many were excited about.
Our mistake was being excited; reminds me we dont know much about almost anyone on the coaching staff except for the former M players for whom we have 2 or more decades of observation.
every coach Moore gets makes me feel even better than the last, so I'm good
You act like an idiot you pay the price … simple
That sucks. Was really excited about that guy.
Hope he gets help. I have also struggled with alcohol at times, and it can get better.
Was this a good tenure or no?
Not a bummer. We don't need alcoholics coaching this team.
Was it Lester Flatt's moonshine?
Only move Moore could make, and it was the right call anyway. If it was a first time, maybe you could figure something out. But this is repeated behavior, and not the example you want to set with your players.
Also, considering the ultra-microscope Michigan has been under for the last 6-9 months, no need to put your program's name in the news for any off-field stuff more than it already is.
