Oh my gosh that's awful! Is there any word on what happened to him?

Gacha!

Gacha!

Probably a good career move…

Probably a good career move for him, I feel like he probably needs to spend some time analyzing offenses.

You're not too far off,…

You're not too far off, actually- He's joining the PAT program- Performing Arts Technology. Stuff like sound engineering and prodiction - setting up a studio for a recording session, operating a mixing board, editing a recording together and finalizing the mix, video production, lighting, etc- it's all stuff that I'd imagine he's very experienced in.

When someone ducks out of…

When someone ducks out of the room to use the restroom during the final- "she's gone, she's gone, she's gone away"

It's even worse than that,…

It's even worse than that, though! All he had to do was keep it in his pants for, like, five more minutes until he hung up the phone, and then just shut up and keep his fantasies to himself.

Here's an interesting…

Here's an interesting thought experiment- if his coach had managed to put 11 guys on the goal line and pulled off the win vs Ohio State, would Hartman's draft stock have been a little higher?

I've heard that it's similar…

I've heard that it's similar to, but also totally different from Wenslydale.

Lemme ask you this- if the…

Lemme ask you this- if the moon was made of spareribs, would you eat it?

Oh man, Scanner, that's so…

Oh man, Scanner, that's so cool! Soak it up.

Oh, maybe we'll make the…

Oh, maybe we'll make the trip! I was kinda thinking that we'd try to get tickets to see the Philadelphia Orchestra at Hill that night (side note- their tuba player, Carol Jantsch, is a UMich grad), so that would make for a pretty lovely Ann Arbor day.

I'm not a royal watcher, but…

I'm not a royal watcher, but fuck cancer is always a message I can get behind.

That's what I figured, XM,…

That's what I figured, XM, but it did seem like a specific enough carveout that it made me raise an eyebrow.

Whoa whoa whoa, time out for…

Whoa whoa whoa, time out for a second- the exception is for human-powered vehicles, or a device used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks- you can operate a train while drunk?

Wow, I've never noticed that…

Wow, I've never noticed that about JJ's arms before. I think he should get that looked at, it could be serious.

I like the alternate grey…

I like the alternate grey one that's got the concrete blocks. I've always kinda thought their whole concrete thing was kinda silly, but it is unique at least.

Early to bed, early to rise,…

Early to bed, early to rise, as the man once said

Yeah, he's kinda coded as…

Yeah, he's kinda coded as bisexual in the books, although I can't remember if it's stated outright, or just left it as an implication. Either way, it feels like an aspect of his character that's tied in with his hedonism and cruelty, which is... certainly a problematic association to make. David Lynch just took that idea and turned it up to, I dunno, 13 or so.

My wife and I are going…

My wife and I are going tonight, super excited about it.

It looks like it's closed to…

It looks like it's closed to the public right now- I think it has been for a while.

Good, the Higginbothams of…

Good, the Higginbothams of the world need more visibility.

Right? Someone needs to open…

Right? Someone needs to open up a new restaurant in town somewhere that serves Angelo's hollandaise and French toast in the morning, and then original Cottage Inn the rest of the day.

Edit: to clarify, I don't want the hollandaise on the French toast. They should both be available, but as separate items.

There's one about him being …

There's one about him being 'a big eater' in the room a couple posts down too. You hit the nail on the head- there is absolutely room to criticize Warde's handling of all sorts of situations over the last couple years, but resorting to taking cheap shots at the man's weight is cruel and embarrassing, and it takes away from actual legitimate discussions of his performance.

Edit: added the link for clarity. It's also a tame post, in the grand scheme of body shaming against Warde, but I too am past the point of being sick of it.

That's really a shame, I've…

That's really a shame, I've got some fond memories of going there for date nights when I was younger.

My wife and I both don't…

My wife and I both don't take valentine's day super seriously, but it is an excuse to make a nice dinner and have a bit of a date night. For today, though, we both are in rehearsal with the Flint Symphony, so we're not gonna get home until 11pm (and we're driving there from two different teaching gigs, so we can't even carpool), so we're going to have said fun dinner and date night tomorrow night instead. Since we're both freelance musicians with crazy schedules, and we often work on weekends and holidays, we're not all that precious about celebrating holidays on the actual date.

For tomorrow, I got some cool cheeses at Whole Foods, and we're going to set up a cheese board as an appetizer, and then for dinner, I'm going to make steamed mussels over a white wine (or maybe dry cider?) broth with fennel, celery, shallots, and garlic, with some crusty bread for dipping.

I think the subtext of this…

I think the subtext of this tweet is that Iowa fan (as of November 26th, 2023) Jim Jordan was upset that his new favorite team didn't manage to score a few/any points on us.

I remember that traffic…

I remember that traffic around Ann Arbor was worse for that spring game than it had been for most of the home games over the previous season.

Wow, that's like, some Brian…

Wow, that's like, some Brian Kelly-ass throwing your guys under the bus. That really sucks.

To be honest, I was ready to see him go after the altercation between him and the staffer at Wisconsin. At that point, I'm not sure I felt like he needed to be fired, but it was more like- if he got fired for that, it would have been understandable, but a bummer. Now, though, seeing his teams fall further and further apart, it's more than apparent that this isn't salvageable.

Oh man, make sure you've got…

Oh man, make sure you've got some meat on that bone.

It says so much about him that he was more than happy to make himself look ridiculous in that cameo- it was so goddamn funny.

That's what I'd love to see…

That's what I'd love to see too- put him in as a slot reciever and see what happens. I'd kinda love to know if Denard Robinson has any ideas along those lines- I'll be honest, I don't know ball well enough to say if the two guys have particularly similar skill sets, but they do have similar speed at least, and I wonder if Robinson being able to take a larger role in things would be beneficial to Edwards.

Works for me- other than the…

Works for me- other than the goal line series where they were insisting on running Edwards up the middle to get him his touchdown, I thought the offense hummed along pretty well in that game. That said, that one blemish from that game kinda speaks to my main concern about the offense for this coming season- they need to figure out how to use Donovan Edwards more creatively and effectively. We've got a huge opportunity with him coming back, and he needs to be a featured part of the offense. I can't imagine that the staff doesn't understand that though, so I'm hopeful about it.

I'll probably end up…

I'll probably end up watching it with my dad and my wife, since it is a nice excuse to get together and make some fun food, but I'm not really all that interested in the game, after the way the Lions lost the other night. That said, San Francisco is kind of the other NFL team I root for- I've got a lot of fondness for the city itself, since it was the first big city I went to as a kid. My dad lived out there for quite a while, starting when I was in undergrad, so I went out to visit a quite a bit. I was actually in San Fran when the Niners beat Green Bay in the playoffs in 2022 and saw the Capitol building all lit up for it, it was pretty neat.

Ha! When I wasin high school…

Ha! When I wasin high school, one of the football team captains played saxophone in the top band. As for first chair or bust- man, I dunno. I've played principal trombone a few times (there are a handful of orchestras in Michigan that I've sat in all three trombone chairs for, qt one time or another) and it's a nice chance of pace, but I still feel way out of my element doing it. Between the two, I'd rather play 2nd trombone- less stress, and a lot of times, the most interesting note in the harmonies show up in the second part, and I find that navigating the intonation challenges that come along with that to be awfully satisfying.

Oh man, yeah- thanks! I've…

Oh man, yeah- thanks! I've definitely heard of and listened to a lot of Trombone Shorty, I'm sure most trombone players have by now. He's pretty incredible! I've got a lot of admiration for anyone who can improvise that fluidly, that's always been something I've struggled with. I'm primarily a classical/orchestral player myself- I can read big band/jazz charts all day, but I'm not much of an improviser.

Well- I'm preparing for two…

Well- I'm preparing for two auditions coming up here pretty soon- 2nd Trombone with the Detroit Opera Orchestra, and then Bass Trombone with the Nashville Symphony later on in March. We'll see- 2nd Trombone isn't really my wheelhouse, but the repertoire list is pretty interesting- it's a chance to work on some wacky opera excerpts that I've never touched before. If neither of them works out, there are at least three pretty substantial bass trombone auditions on the horizon, and my philosophy with these things is that preparation is additive.

Besides that, I've got two really fun Flint Symphony performances on the way- Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony on February 17th, and then the week after that, we're playing the full score to the 1989 Batman film, as a live accompaniment to a screening of the actual movie. It's getting pretty common for orchestras to do that sort of thing, but I've never gotten to play one yet, and I'm really excited about it.

Ahh. So this is what it…

Little known fact- Lone Pine Elementary used to be Twin Pines Elementary, until some pesky kid ran over one of the pine trees in a time travel experiment.

Thanks for the info, Seth! I might have to look into that this year.

I've really been liking the…

I've really been liking the all-Blue uniforms, and it definitely helps that it's a huge part of thr look of some of the biggest, most cathartic wins over the last few seasons. It's a really simple change, and I don't feel like it fundamentally changes the design of the uniform, since the helmet is left alone, and it doesn't add any sort of extra design details (looking at you, weird Adidas shoulder stripes). You can look at a black and white photo of the all-Blues and still know right away that it's Michigan football.

On top of that, I think the Uniform decisions they made for the end of this season were spot-on. The throwback Rose Bowl jerseys with the big M shoulder patches and rose details, with the Maize pants were just perfect, and u wouldn't have wanted us in anything else for the Rose Bowl. Then, since the CFP championship game is a relatively new tradition, I thought it was a great idea to go with the all-Blues for that. It felt like we went with a classic classic look for the Rose Bowl, and then a look that's becoming a modern classic for the finals.

Lol so we just had- a commercial break, then a 3rd down play, a field goal kick, commercial, kickoff, commercial.

Definitely sad, but good for…

Definitely sad, but good for him. He's an incredible player and an incredible person, and I hope he's going to be legendary at the next level, because he is certainly a legend here already, as is everybody who played this year and the last two.

With all of the players declaring for the draft these last couple days, this has the feeling of the end of Return of the King to me, with the Fellowship finally coming to an end, and Frodo sailing off on the last ship. (yes, please go ahead and make fun of my nerdiness, but then also remember that all of the preview podcasts for this season had hobbit-related titles). These players went and accomplished the biggest goal that was out there in front of them, though incredible adversity, and now they've come home and it's time for them to go their separate ways. What we've just witness this season- and really, over the last three seasons, since they clearly should be remembered as a whole- is amazing. Probably the greatest achievement in modern Michigan athletics, but to see this era come to a close (no matter what Harbaugh's decision is, with the playoff format changing and the Big10 becoming something totally different, this is absolutely the end of an era) is always going to be colored with some amount of sadness. Following this team will be a stretch of time in my Mighigan fandom that I will always cherish.

I tried to get seats for my dad, my wife, and a high school buddy, but I could get to checkout fast enough to secure them before someone else had picked one of those seats and finished the sale faster. By the third try, they were sold out. Oh well- werestill gonna go to the parade, and then we'll have a fun dinner afterwards.

Brian, I'm so glad to hear from you again after you shut down Genuinely Sarcastic. Even though that blog was more often than not documenting rough times, it was still a great read. I think it may have actually been the first michigan blog I found, and then I found my way here from there. Since things have turned around over the last couple seasons, I've found myself thinking now and then about what your reaction might be, and I've been hoping that you were hanging in there.
