3rd and 13. Glenn goes man press zero blitz with some of the worst corners in the league and guess what happens? 30 yard completion. Why not play 2 deep and give those corners some safety help.
At Campbell's introductory press conference, I remember thinking "Oh no... What have we done???" But it didn't take me long to come around on him.
Quinn and Patricia literally removed any and all talent from this roster. The rebuild required was generational. So far, Campbell has done well in a few key areas in my opinion:
He gets buy in from his players and his players WANT to play for him.
He isn't afraid to replace assistants that he thinks are not performing and upgrade the talent there. See: Aubrey Pleasant, Anthony Lynn (Ben Johnson may be the best OC in the league right now).
He works well with Brad Holmes to select talent at all levels in the draft. Look how many young players are starting and contributing. When is the last time you could say that about the LIONS!!!
I think Goff is better than I anticipated. I think I'd spend next year's draft capital on defense as much as possible. Definitely still need some additional help at corner, and depth at linebacker. I really want Will Anderson.
If they make good selections and sign a strategic free agent or two, sky is the limit next year. I think they can win a game, maybe two in the playoffs this year, but I don't think they have a championship defense yet.
Feels so good to have legit hope for the Lions though. If they ever win the SuperBowl, the party in Detroit will be a wonder of the world.
After watching this game I do think OSU is better. It is crap about the extra game tho. If USC lost a nailbiter I could see it. But this is a ruthless beating. I’m cringing while watching it. USC is getting their ass kicked in every way an ass can be kicked.
Question: Williams is obviously hurt. Does the committee penalize them for playing an extra game and losing if their qb is hurt? Probably. But it’s an interesting thing to consider.
Observations: Kyle Wittingham is a damn good coach. Lincoln Riley can coach offense but he doesn’t have a clue what to do on the other side of the ball.
USC defense is atrocious. Can’t stop the run and can’t cover tight ends. We’d annihilate them. I saw a six man box by Utah quite a few times and USC didn’t seem interested in running against that. They fall in love with the pass like OSU does.
Let’s hope USC gets their act together in the second half.
I’m not too educated about basketball. But if you have trouble shooting and defending wouldn’t you want to really crash the glass for more opportunities? Seems like Juwan sends everyone back and ignored the glass. But even we we send everyone back we still don’t defend well.
This is a good take. I get emotional in these games and just rail against him but then - just like you say you see his heart in these interviews vs say a guy like Tucker and I’m glad to have him. But the passing offense and playcalling. Yeah. Gotta do something about it next year.
The disappointment for me is that we have the talent on paper to be title worthy. The receivers and the quarterback are just not playing to potential. Either it’s because they aren’t talented or they don’t get the coaching to improve. The play calls do not put them in position to succeed. It’s so frustrating. Other times it’s like we refuse to try to win the game. Running in 3rd and 15 and refusing to use RPOs and zone reads.
I want to believe in Harbaugh so bad. I though last year we had it going in the right direction. And I think we still can. But man - the offensive playcalling just torpedoes us so often. Smart defensive coaches have no trouble stopping us from a scheme standpoint. Mostly we out talent teams anyway. But what do we do against the top ten teams. I dunno

JJ get a couple consecutive series instead of this one play at a time stuff. And not to just hand off, but give him some meaningful passing plays. The problem with this is - should have happened in the Western and NIU games.
Let Cade run a read option 2-3 times a game - just to keep the run defense honest. Sick of watching short yardage plays where the end or linebacker crash in hard because he has no threat outside to contain. I think this specifically would help our redzone offense quite a bit, since the coaching staff really prefers to play more conservatively inside the 20's.
Throw to the middle of the field more. I think this part they are finally starting to do a little more. So that's progress I guess?
I have no expectation that we'll be prepared for tempo any better than we are now. 7 years of evidence is hard to ignore.

You are spot on. You cannot tell me that the game plan against Minnesota was so much better, then drool all over yourself in weeks 2 and 3. Someone chose to turtle the gameplan. Only question is - was it Gattis or Harbaugh putting his thumb on Gattis. I tend to believe the latter as the evidence exists over multiple Offensive coordinators.

Then I think the kids get their heads blown up to the point they thiunk they can just walk on the field and win. I remember Lou Holtyz would always say this stuff about the OPPOSING team when he was at Notre Dame and his teams always played their best when facing good teams. Maybe our approach is backwards in this respect.
