The study mentioned in this…

The study mentioned in this press release suggests that the Rooney rule doesn't work:

https://newsinfo.iu.edu/web/page/normal/17626.html#:~:text=Sportswriters%20and%20pundits%20often%20credit,had%20little%20impact%20on%20hiring.

Rather than interviewing someone just because they possess the relevant identity marker (person of color, woman, person with a disability, etc.), the press release concludes that a more effective way to promote employment would be to make efforts to get African Americans and Latinx coaches in the coaching pipeline (i.e. support recruitment in lower level or entry level positions so they have the experience they need to do well at the college and pro levels).

This is very interesting…

This is very interesting. Thanks for making this comparison between the two kickers. I recognize this may be unduly subjective, but is there a way to account for (i.e. calculate) the importance of the kick as it relates to the overall outcome?

Ruggles made a ton of kicks for OSU, but of course missed what would have been arguably the most important kick of the year against Georgia.

for UM - Moody's field goal when we played Illinois, for example, was hugely significant, much more so than the last field goal Turner kicked against Iowa (23-0 or 26-0 matters not so much).

The goal, of course, would be to understand this: when games were on the line, who was better?

just because he didn't…

just because he didn't commit crimes in the 1990s, that doesn't mean he's not an asshole for supporting those who did commit crimes.

by your logic, there is nothing apprehensible about someone who has pro nazi-sympathies now  because they didn't commit crimes in world war II, right?  Or it would be ok for someone who is a white nationalist in the states because they personally didn't own slaves?

the whole point of the work at ICTY was to hold individuals responsible, not an entire people. That said, Novak has the ability to choose what to believe and what causes to support. the fact is he is a Serbian nationalist, and supports individuals and groups that were old enough to and did in fact commit crimes in the 1990s.

You know not of what you…

You know not of what you speak. the peddler of nationalist bullshit is Novak, not me.

In a previous job I investigated war crimes for the UN (ICTY). The wars from the 1990s, the crimes, and their consequences shouldn't be discounted because some asshole can hit a tennis ball.

i'm sorry - what does…

i'm sorry - what does this mean: "but at some point, a person, especially a leader might have to conclude that it's time to move on."

a person in a leadership position who has the authority to act and can compel others to act is more not less responsible to direct others to do the right thing. If said "leader" concluded that it's time to move on, then that leader could have and should have done a much better job communicating that, and could have and should have held responsible (however the "leader" deemed appropriate) those individuals who had acted in a reprehensible way, even if others (police department, athletic department) did not.

You don't continue to allow them to play.

For Portugal, you need resources to buy property, and to pass a language test, but I think you have a number of years to learn the basics.  It's still a lot easier than most places in Europe.

the english language is rich

You can use many creative words to call a person's behavior asinine, inappropriate, offensive, etc.. People with developmental disabilities and the vast majority of people who work with people with developmental disabilities strongly believe that "the r word" is inappropriate and have made repeated requests that it no longer be used.

I find it hard to understand why some people on this board are so stubborn or proud to not honor such requests.

just because we are all miles apart, this shouldn't give you license to say offensive or completely disrespecful things for the sake of saying offensive things.  You're essentially repeating Cardale Jone's asinine behavior and ridiculous excuses.

If you are white, when you go into an all black neighborhood, do you use the N-word?  if you were in a room with persons with development disabilities and their families, would you use the r-word, knowing how disrespectful it is?

if so, and that's how you want to go through life, then you sure win the prize, congrats for being a total ass.

if you wouldn't act that way in a public setting in their community , then don't use it here.

terminology

I'm sorry - but I have to respond to this.  since it is common practice to point out poor grammar, I feel there is or should also be license to point out that terms such as "retarded" are offensive and have been recognized as such for awhile.

Here is a recentish post on when it is ok to use the word:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10/29/r-word-advocacy_n_6064196.html

for those not interested in following the link, the answer is never. Find another word.

You're right - I was not

You're right - I was not there.

That said, I worked for a prosecutor's office for 4 1/2 years.  Based on that experience I am convinced if you compared the key facts of the case with similar cases, and you redacted the names of the persons involved and looked at the outcomes (findings of guilt/innocence and sentencing) you would see that he was treated differently by the court, the police, and by potential future employers.

I'm sorry, "calling it a day" is equivalent to saying you can beat someone up if you are already or are going to be a famous athlete.

The problem with this is that he was treated differently by the court, by the police, and by the Seahawks because of who he is.  and that is not just.  and thus not fair for anyone, as Ace pointed out.

Thank you, Ace, for writing this piece, and thank you MGOBLOG for publishing it.

Just want to echo what

Just want to echo what Seattleblue says about some of the big organizations (UNICEF and Save) in Nepal.  I've been in international relief and development business 20 years, and I can say the best use of funds is to go to local /domestic groups (if you know them to be credible; there are a lot of faux NGOs out there). If you don't know what local or domestic groups are credible, then try to find someone reliable /trustworthy who does have contact with organizations on the ground.  Some of the big name organizations just use disasters as opportunities to raise funds, with little to no money actually going there.

Handicap International

So, coincidentally last year I did an independent evaluation of HI's programs in this region (India and Bangladesh; and I know some of the staff at HI Nepal) and I would actually recommend not donating to them, harsh as that sounds.

I don't want to go into details , but let me just say there are better NGOs to donate to.   I used to work for Mercy Corps - and I think a donation to Mercy Corps would go a lot further.  If you want to donate to groups working on disability, then you might want to consider some national disabled persons organizations: Nepal Disabled Women's Association (NDWA) or National Federation of the Disabled Nepal (NFDN). Both of those are reputable and doing good work.

this is fine -

put all 11 of them in at the same time - that will keep the defenses guessing.

true story -

I had a paper route (delivering the ann arbor news when it was a real paper) and he and others on the team were on my route.  I don't remember what year it was, but he had an apartment on Pauline between Stadium & S. Maple.  I remember thinking it was strange that athletes lived so far from campus...but I was only 11 or 12 at the time.

scratch that -

question why Harvard?

I did my undergrad at UM and grad school at Harvard.  My question for your daughter would be why do you want to go to Harvard?  Prestige? friends? particular field or professors?

My sense is that if she is a motivated and inquisitive student, she would do equally well at both places, and then it boils down to other issues already mentioned: cost, distance, family, etc.
