Yahoo: Partridge Tried Getting Rid of Evidence and Booster Partially Funded Stalions

The NCAA presented the University of Michigan with new evidence this week, including that a Michigan booster may have at least partially funded Connor Stalions’ advanced scouting operation and an assistant coach allegedly participated in the destruction of evidence on a computer after the scandal broke, industry sources tell Yahoo Sports.

The worst part of it is that it's a bad strategy for the future. You can't appease your enemies in life. It's just seen as weakness and they'll go after you even harder the next time. And there's always a next time.

It's weak to stand on "everybody does it". It's even weaker to capitulate every time. You have to stand up for yourself and let your enemies know that you won't be an easy target.

That doesn't mean I approve of what Stalions did. Or what Partridge did if he tried to cover it up. But I also don't approve of all these voluntary suspensions and firings. Now we're down a game-day coach and a key positions coach for the only game that matters.

And worse, we're more-or-less officially a bigger villain than everyone but SMU before the death penalty. Michigan versus everybody is kind of fun once or twice, but it's going to get old fast.

Boosters can't be tied to schools anymore the NCAA has shown time and time again.  Boosters can't get the schools in trouble anymore.   At least that is why I get from the NCAA now a days.   The Miami booster who stole money from investors and paid Miami recruits to come to Miami has not amounted to anything.   We are talking about Millions of dollars with this guy not 10000 thousand dollars.

Yeah, the new information that's coming out now is extremely bad and no amount of sticking heads in the sand or whataboutism changes that. Remember, when Jim Tressel got fired it wasn't because of the stupid gold pants - it was because he lied and tried to cover it up after he was initially informed and during the subsequent investigation.

It has, literally, never worked that way. OSU fired Tressel and they still got a postseason ban and probation. Michigan could fire the entire coaching staff this afternoon and the NCAA would still punish the program once the investigation concludes. There's a reason we have the phrase "lack of institutional control".

Yahoo Sports is actually extremely well respected, and have a history of breaking new stories that turn out to be factual.  I honestly have no idea what else Yahoo does, or if they're relevant in any other way; but for sports news, they're legitimately top-notch.

Well.....now we know why Michigan called the dogs off.

Not a great situation, but at the same time, all the pressure is now on OSU to win next week. Harbaugh won't be there, the LB coach and one of the ace recruiters just got fired. If after all of that they STILL lose.....Day could legitimately be dropped off at the MI/OH state line and told his services are no longer required.

The board is losing it's mind...

Partridge can have no connection to the sign stealing operation, while also trying to cover up evidence once the investigation proceeded. Both can be true.

My gut tells me there will end up being more things in plain sight and people say "huh...yeah...that was kind of weird we didn't notice that" regarding stallions. Sounds like from other sources Partridge may have seen or known of things occurring but was not involved in the scheme and then tried to cover it up.

This might matter in terms of evaluating the sign-stealing allegations narrowly.  Right now, I think the far bigger danger is Lack of Institutional Control.  You've got an analyst (not a numbered member of staff) who is is allowed to stand right next to the OC and DC on gameday, and the Head Coach doesn't ask any questions?  The analyst refuses to cooperate with either Michigan or the NCAA's respective investigations, which is in and of itself a serious violation for the NCAA, but also could be used as evidence of LOIC.  Now you've got an actual assistant destroying evidence.  And of course the Covid recruiting issue that Michigan suspended Harbaugh for at the beginning of the year is still open, so that would also conceivably count towards a LOIC argument.  I honestly don't know if this amounts to LOIC or not, but that's definitely what I'd be worried about if I was Michigan.  And if this isn't enough in and of itself, how many other things need to emerge that Harbaugh wasn't aware of, before the NCAA says, "There was just too much going on in your program that you didn't know about, you clearly weren't doing your job at making sure everyone was following the rules?"

Ok ok ok, how much more of this fucked up shit can our good guys endure before The Team implodes? I mean, these guys are tough. They’re fighting on that field every-fucking-game.  But how much of this “adult” grade bullshit can these kids handle before the confusion translates to the field. Shit makes me wanna scream. The bad thing is, we don’t know how much farther this shit is going to go.  Harbaugh is suspended and hasn’t announced it in respect of these kids, and the university. But you know he’s leaving this time.

The downside is that this is bad.

The upside is that this actually doesn't take things much further than where they already were, just that we have a name for the person (who *could* be a relative of Stalions for all we know, and remember that he is well-funded and was a big Michigan fan as a teen when he briefly posted here) ponying up the cash that clearly didn't come from the athletic department. And we have one guy trying to hide it... who didn't know of the original plan... while everyone else didn't know.

That's not great, but it could be worse if that's where it winds up. Maybe another assistant is involved. But if we keep it to the original issue, I'd be happy to get that out of the way.

Relatively speaking.

Yea, it’s never good for a position coach to be fired and it’s doubly not good for him to be fired in connection with the CS investigation.

But if a coach gets canned for something related to CS, it’s much better for Michigan for it to be related to something that happened after the news broke than something that happened before the news broke.

Don't care about illegal scouting. NIL has proven the excessive use of $ to get and keep players. Michigan most probably is bending the rules they used to ardently abide by. Who cares?? Ohio, Alabama, Georgia, among others, are losing a big chunk of the pie with the reemergance of Michigan as a top 5 program and it's time to stand up to the bully.

This is just me, of course, so feel free to ignore as one should, but I suppose that if I were Michigan and I had found this out ahead of a court date, even a hearing that I might win but one which could precipitate other proceedings, this news would make me less enthusiastic about such proceedings potentially.

I hope the morons suggesting to protest at Santa's house can now stfu.  I feel bad for him.  He was 100% supporting the team and turns out he was lied to by a member on the coaching staff.

I disagree. Michigan didn't dig deep enough in their own investigation before publicly pounding their chest last week. Has the NCAA been using enhanced interrogation techniques to get this information? No. Who has the best access to comb for evidence and wrongdoing in the university's IT environment? People within Michigan either intentionally stopped pulling on the Stalions thread or knew this extended beyond him and were naively hoping the NCAA wouldn't figure it out.

monkeybiz

Is that true? Seems odd that an institution can't investigate itself, but this is the NCAA we're dealing with. Anyway, the allegations have been out for weeks and I find it hard to believe Michigan didn't at least ask a few questions internally. I don't know when the "official" NCAA investigation began. Perhaps they were leaning so heavily on the "grey area", "due process" and "everyone does it" arguments that they didn't feel the need to probe and were satisfield with Stalions' suspension and Harbaugh's denial. I would say that's a bit risky.

I agree with this sentiment and have for awhile now.  And not going deep enough (whether out of ineptitude or just not wanting to know what was going on beneath the surface) seems par for the course these days, whether it be poorly (or not at all) vetted hires, or even just the sheer stupidity of all of this.

Every day I get on here, I read posts from people talking about what is actually allowable versus what is not, what everyone else is doing, how "[insert latest negative news dump] may actually be a good thing"...  I'm just so sick of it.  The only things dumber than what was done has been the university's handling of all of this over the last month and how deep many of us have buried our heads in the sand.

I'm going to keep pulling for this team, keep cheering them as they win, but I have nothing but certainty in the belief that sooner or later, whether for a good reason or not, the NCAA is going to take their pound of flesh to try and look relevant in the NIL era and come hard for this team.

imdwalrus

November 17th, 2023 at 1:51 PM ^

Yep. This honestly is making me question exactly how Michigan handled all of this internally.  They should have known about this, especially since we already know Stalions basically didn't cover his tracks at ALL. And either alternative - that Michigan did know and didn't do anything, or that they didn't know because of some mixture of incompetence, willful ignorance, or something else - is very bad for the program.

To paraphrase Office Space; "You know what I can't figure out? How is it that these stupid, Neanderthal OSU goons can be so good at crime and smart guys like us can suck so badly at it??

Experience, I guess...

This month has been a sick hit-job perpetrated by spineless hypocrites incapable of winning the game on the field, but they got us.  I hope to hell we do have a mountain of dirt to dump when the time is right, but I don't think Michigan is as good at mudslinging.

We have a hell of a team full of the best young men and coaches in the country.  Unlike our adversaries, our boys will prove their worth on the field...  Go Blue!

If Stalions' videos were on computers available to Partridge how many other staffers had access to them and knew about them? Waiting for more shoes to drop.

This entire “scandal” is stupefying. If you’re gonna break rules, however stupid they are, how can you be so brazenly idiotic?! At least two CFB coaching/staff careers ended because you do things like not have a burner phone or have your name on a Venmo or go to a freaking game in person. Also, if Partridge was covering for Stallions that’s just a serious lack of integrity.

I don’t know if UM and Harbaugh shouldn’t just move on soon. The program is in a good spot culturally. If Sherrone excels in this position, then maybe just make him the guy.

I don’t want to say it, because I know I’m getting negged to Bolivia, but I think we could use more institutional control than we have. Like right now, it seems in short supply. Some might even say that there’s a distinct…dearth…of it…a shortage, perhaps a drought?

One salient thing people here aren't realizing is that Partridge just rejoined the coaching staff this year. He couldn't have been "involved" for very long, even if he was. And there's no evidence he knew about anything until Stalions was outed.

Qseverus

November 17th, 2023 at 2:18 PM ^

At this point, it seems rather silly defending Partridge. He apparently knew about the videos, or some other incriminating information, and where it was located. And had computer access rights to delete it. And there was apparently enough evidence to convince Michigan to fire him.

You have to believe Harbaugh is being truthful about not knowing this whole thing is going on. The rest of the staff better have been being truthful too. If they weren't, then this program is coached by the dumbest group of people on earth.

These are minor violations, there would be no reason to die on the "I didn't know" hill unless you were being 100% honest. If Harbaugh and the coordinators or other assistants knew, they should have just said that from the start and been like "yeah, Connor was the sign stealing guy, we found out he was having people tape games but didn't realize it was against the rule, it looks like a gray area to us but maybe we're wrong, but the rule is old and outdated and not a huge deal so yes, just give us our slap on the wrist and be done with it."

That's all they should have done if they knew about all this. If they chose to die on this hill, sued the Big Ten, saber rattled for 3 weeks, and they knew about the scheme all along, they turned a stupid minor violation into a big one and don't deserve to coach a Big Ten football team.

I have to imagine they're telling the truth, they can't be that dumb.

Who has been investigating with access to and the ability to know if CP 'attempted to destroy evidence'?   I can see an internal investigation getting there, but who would have access to identify that?
