Yahoo article on AD meeting

https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-big-ten-ads-urging-commissioner-tony-p…

summary:

“However, a decision from the league is uncertain, though options have been discussed. On their calls over the last week in fact, high-level school administrators and Petitti have pored over a wide range of possibilities. There was talk, for instance, of any penalty not impacting players directly. A suspension of coach Jim Harbaugh may be the most likely and “cleanest” penalty if one were handed down, one source said.”

“The policy was at the center of discussions last week between school leaders and Petitti. According to the policy, the commissioner can take disciplinary action that is considered “standard” or “major.””

Standard action includes a fine not exceeding $10,000 and a suspension of no more than two contests. Major action is anything exceeding those penalties and is subject to approval from the Big Ten executive board of presidents.”

I am starting to believe that a likely outcome of this, for this year, is that Harbaugh will be suspended for two games.

I have been saying from the beginning that this isn't really a rules violation case, at least in the normal sense of the word. This is a PR effort to damage Michigan, to essentially "cancel" Michigan.

This has played out consistently on other issues, it hasn't really touched college sports, but the script is always the same. The target person or organization either commits some sort of what most would typically brush off as a minor transgression, but in this case well-connected people with a goal in mind drum up a media firestorm, control the narrative, and push for IMMEDIATE harsher punishments.

The mob on social media and other parties that could stand to gain by take down of the target then pile on and demand action. More news comes out every day, never really changing much but always packaged and spun in the most outrage inducing way to keep the fire hot, and the cycle repeats until whatever entity has power over the target acts.

The leaks coming out of the most recent meeting seems to indicate that the league is "considering options" but don't want to "hurt the players," so a suspension of Harbaugh has "been discussed." This is a perfect get out of jail free card for the Big Ten to act in a spineless fashion. They won't nuke Michigan and ban them from the championship, but they'll suspend Harbaugh and issue a $10k fine so they can say they "did something" to appease the mob.

Of course, this will be unlikely to appease the mob. They will then point to the suspension as "proof" that Michigan is guilty of major sins and turn their attention to the CFP. Whether they cave or not is anyone's guess.

With the avalanche of news tweets, can someone help me find one from last week?   I remember someone reported that a number of t

Big ten teams were not only stealing signs but the sharing that info.  MSU and a couple schools were unaware.

I am trying to look for the source of that story.  Seems very relevant with the Big Ten coaches all complaining to the AD.

Troll Thamel now is saying MSU AD feared we knew what they were going to do and players would get hurt. He also is now trying to say that the commish is now talking to the NCAA. Possibly to levy something against us. The propaganda and garbage being spewed by garbage journalists is just unreal.

Who’s squealing to Yahoo about this is what I want to know. It isn’t the B1G office, I’ll bet. It’s one or more of the coach’s underlings (for purposes of denying).  They don’t have the guts to put their names on this cowardly act. It is highly likely, however, that the bad actor schools will become known to Michigan through back channels and Harbaugh (and the rest of the program) will remember. We will visit a terrible wrath upon them.

It's amazing how this staff, team and program are being dragged through the mud on a daily basis, on the biggest platforms out there, and fat ass Warde is just being silent.

Allan Haller, who had information about his pervert head coach for nine months before being forced to act by a USA Today article, should really not be commenting on any forum, public or private, about Michigan’s situation.

All the reporting from this meeting seems to imply the big ten is considering leveling penalties this year and splitting the difference by just hitting Harbaugh and not the program

Tony Petiti is going to meet with Santa Ono tomorrow. I wonder if this two-game suspension is materializing.

He is also in Ann Arbor for the Big Ten Field Hockey semifinals.

If the big ten comes down on Michigan right now, and bans them suspends Harbaugh without even a notice of allegations, or Hearing Michigan defense then fuck the big ten. as another poster said….

“Michigan should absolutely leave the conference to go independent or join the SEC.  Why should we keep subsidizing the minnows of the conference by sharing tv money with them.  Screw that.”

If Michigan accepts any type of punishment without any conclusive evidence from the NCAA investigation then they deserve all the hurt and repercussions that occur !!! Like Jim saying fuck you to his spineless superiors!!!

Brian Cook said that he has good Intel that of the B1G tries to punish Michigan this year before the NCAA investigation is through, that Michigan would take legal action. The B1G would be incredibly foolish to do this. Why do they care so much what these other lower rung school ADs that suck on the teet of Michigan and OSU think? Why would they want to give into the mob mentality and ruin their chances at getting more of that $$$ from Michigan? Michigan needs to threaten to leave the B1G if this happens, even if it's a small punishment. The SEC wouldn't pull this bullshit with their fellow schools.

Thamel's piece had more info than Yahoo. Or at least additional info. Here's the situ:

  • Petitti never had any intention of doing anything.
  • The B1G coaches threw a shit fit, acting like little children.
  • The ADs came in and were much calmer, but had the same message: It's very important, young Petitti, that you do something. We are here to guide you and tell you what to do, but it's up to you! But we'll help. We support you. You're a good boy.
  • Petitti still doesn't want to do anything because he doesn't have the facts (literally this is his concern). But he is obviously feeling the pressure now.
  • He wants to talk with the NCAA more, he wants to talk with Michigan more, he wants to talk with the Presidents.

In other words, he's not ready to do anything, he's paralyzed with indecision, he doesn't want to do anything, but now he's afraid he's going to get yelled at. He's not acting quickly, which means by the time he's ready to finally cave and give the ADs what they want, Harbaugh's suspension will be just in time for the OSU game.

I’m gonna get negged, and I get the frustration, but blaming espn and any news outlet is crazy.  So much deflection and rationalization.  I think the whole thing is overblown, but it ain’t nothing. And it is embarrassing.

that being said, love this team, hope we destroy all in front of us.  It does not seem to be as bad as reported and the clutching of pearls, but it does seem bad.

Just blaming folk, is dumb, getting pre-outraged when nothing has affected us yet, is dumb.  There is no secret agenda by news folks other than getting clicks on specious reporting.  Who cares until it matters. Mad at something that does not seem accurate, doesn’t make the stuff that is accurate less embarrassing.

just don’t want the kids on the field to suffer.

if the big ten doesn’t fuck us, that’s great.  We would be ravenous piraña if this was anyone else.

I got negged to high hell for saying that we certainly bear some responsibility for a terrible vetting process which has bitten us in the ass recently on more than one occasion. However, we are being singled out, hit with innuendo by a news outlet with ample commercial motive to damage our brand, and are being tried in the press. There is supposed to be a standard of due process and we are getting very little of it. That’s why people are seriously pissed.

I think it's going to be hard for the big ten to even suspend a coach without allowing a conclusion to the investigation and a formal response from the university. Current big ten coaches have the right to be pissed if they were impacted by a close game in previous seasons but there is no chance Michigan would have lost any of the games to date even without the signs. Moreover, Penn State and Ohio State now have plenty of time to prepare so there should be no fear or excuses moving forward. So it makes little sense for the big ten to do something impulsive that impacts this season.

Being objective, the stalions stuff is bad enough (especially with the CMU sideline appearance and another appearance that might be announced shortly) that it probably does warrant a coaching suspension and possibly more if there is clear evidence Harbaugh and other coaches knew exactly what was going on. I just don't see how the big ten could suspend without a completed investigation.

A lot of people are hard on the Michigan AD for not being more supportive of Harbaugh, but none of us really know the true extent of this. Hopefully the rogue staffer theory holds, but I'm not going to lie and say there is a risk this could be really bad.

People willing to accept punishment for Michigan from the conference? What the hell is wrong with you?

Nothing has been proven yet. Hell, it hasn't hardly been *investigated* yet. And people are saying, "hey, I'm fine with a 2-game suspension"? For what? A bunch of media outrage and vendetta?

I'm with Klatt.....protocols need to be followed. You can't disregard procedure just because of loud voices and manufactured outrage. Or because you just don't like someone.

Agreed that nothing should happen until there is a conclusion. But you have to admit its a bit more than media "smoke".

Michigan had a staffer on another teams sideline taping the game with sunglasses lol. That's pretty sketch. However, we still don't have anything that establishes a direct link between stalions and harbaugh.

AlbanyBlue

November 2nd, 2023 at 11:25 PM ^

Exactly...there has to be an investigation for a punishment. I'm with Klatt.

"Well, we're punishing Michigan because the other ADs in the conference said we should punish Michigan" is so far beyond ridiculous I can hardly type it.

If Mr. Wyld Stallions was breaking the rules, fine, nuke him into the sun, but I fail to see how this relates to Harbaugh. Did he schedule the trips to other schools? Did he authorize? Did he even know? And to Stalions himself: What did he do? To what extent? How did he do it? How does this relate to NCAA rules?

That's why there has to be an investigation.

"Michigan, we're suspending your head coach because your rivals demand it, and they seem really upset" seems like a pretty easy way to fuck up your rivals. I don't think it's supposed to work that way.

Smoke? Perhaps. But you can't punish on smoke. That's not how it works.

I have an idea, Michigan should join the Pac 2, make it the Pac 3 and get this shit poppin.  Pick off Clemson , fsu, notre dame , Duke, etc

TV would come a runnin

why not at this point ?

all these ADs/coaches crying in their grape nuts because Michigan is embarrassing them and they can’t accept it.

Or, ya know, give us actual evidence. You can’t be like: Jim Harbaugh eats babies…oh yea…here’s a photo of a guy that looks like Jim and he’s NEAR a baby. Ok but do you have anything proving that? Well, look! It’s Jim alright. Ok…do you have any babies missing? Oh yea tons of ‘em. Okay any names? Nah we don’t need to get into that. Ok, so do you have any REAL proof of anything? No, you don’t because you’d be screaming at the top of your lungs if you did. Crazy world and despicable “journalism”.

I would think the BIG10 suspending coaches at this point open up a whole new level of toxicity in the conference.  I would think multiple firms would be under retainer at this point doing nothing but monitoring every program and considering how to best coordinate coverage of any and everything found - how long until videos of players at parties, coaches doing god knows what, etc make it out into the PR space.

Any money on how long it would take to dig up dirt on just about any program?

From Forde's article about the AD meeting:

"That leaves the Big Ten, which thus far has showed no sign of wanting to derail a potential playoff bid for one of the league’s flagship programs.

“That couple of million extra bucks that we make when we put two teams in the CFP is awfully nice,” an administrator at a Big Ten school says, when asked for a reason why some ADs would not want to ban Michigan from the conference championship game."

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Sign stealing is very wrong and Michigan hurt the integrity of the game and blah blah blah, but well we don't want them to be banned from the CFP because that means more money for us. Cheating is ok if it means more money for us. What a crock of shit.
