So we are happy to be getting one of the players from a vacated era of Michigan basketball?  Might as well, the football team was taking money a few years ago.

Are we still going to shit on everyone else's coaches and call them dirty when our athletes are taking cash and we hire a bball coach whose teams were so corrupt that they erased the entire four years from the record books?

I guess I just want to know how high and mighty when discussing this stuff.

Juwan Howard never took cash.  It was never even suggested he took cash.  He has been one of the most dignified representatives of Michigan Athletics both as a student and an Alumni.

Go fuck a rolling doughnut.

Sure, Ed Martin handed everyone cash except Juwan Howard.  That's conveniently naive.

Look, if this were Notre Dame, Penn State, MSU, or Ohio State, in the exact same situation, we would all be here calling them out for it and you know it.

Michigan needs to distance itself from anyone in that era or expect to be called hypocrites for the way the fan base treats everyone with their holier than thou attitude.

Honest question-why would our athletic department give a single fuck if other fan bases call them hypocrites? Unless you are talking about us fans who need to distance ourself from that era or be called hypocrites, then, my question is the exact same. You think an MSU fan can criticize any Michigan fan while their athletes are raping people and being named in an FBI investigation? Unless, to use your reasoning, you think Miles Bridges really only had one dinner bought for him and that’s it

Look up Howard's history and find that he did not have to vacate his 1993-94 All-American status or his regional's Most Outstanding Player. Why? Because he didn't do a damn thing wrong.

Jalen also did not have to vacate his 93-94 All-American status for the same reason.

Stop lumping Juwan, Jalen, Jimmy, and Ray in with the players who actually hurt the program. Those are Webber, Maurice Taylor, Robert Traylor, Louis Bullock, and Albert White.

Don’t forget Mateen

Jalen is really the amazing case.  He was a Detroit kid with not a wealthy background growing up right in the middle of it all.  Credit goes to him.

Juwan was from Chicago (nowhere near Ed Martin) and fell in love with the University.   He was the catalyst behind the Fab Five.

As long as Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, et al draw breath, I've given up on high and mighty.

Does no good.

Pay the players.

If you don't want to pay them, then look the other way while somebody else does.

As a Michigan Alum you can ALWAYS act high and mighty. (Partial /s)

As noted elsewhere - afaik only 1 player in the fab five has ever been accused of taking (serious) money and it is NOT JH.

Michigan COULD have stonewalled the investigation and would have likely gotten off with a wrist slap and maybe a show-cause on an assistant coach.  Instead they did the honorable (/stupid) thing and the rest is history.

FYI - citing that story about some M FB players getting $ from agents without the schools knowledge - (when undoubtedly this happens at most/many schools) - is no way on par with the “Rashawn Gary offered $100k by Clemson boosters” or “AZ MBB coach plays star player $10k per month”.

Rest Easy and feel superior.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he’s 1 of 3 unsigned 2019 composite top 100. Of those other two one guy just reclassified from 2020 and the other is Jalen Wilson. His brother had UW offer and decided to go play for Fisher obviously Juwan’s former college coach. I think these things are telling.

Get this done sooner than later. Since Wilson obviously didn't commit to Michigan, he can stay gone. We need a coach that can add some players asap.

I'm excited if it turns out to be Howard.  But, I'm not in the "It's Happening!" place that I would be with a current tier one coach; not that I was expecting that.

Hope it works out great.  I'll be optimistic.

I'm content with this choice considering how it's played out.  Given Jalen and C-Webb's influence in the media, the risk of a different choice would have been astronomical just from an appearances stand point.  Juwan's character, coaching reputation and school ties made it a no brainer given the mediocre alternatives.

Kids at lima ohio last week were supposedly told by Z's father that Howard will be the coach... was posted here somewhere.

I AM excited by this (if true)  JB is one of the best coaches in college bball so we were never going to "replace" him.  Our other choices are B- coaches or (hopefully) a rising star in Juwan.  He brings with him credibility and excitement that none of the other coaches do.  Let's do this and keep our fingers crossed.

Make no mistake this is a significant step backward for the program.

Why?  I am not going to say that there is no chance that hiring Juwan won't produce the results that Michigan has come to expect from its BB program.  But, I think you're not taking into account the intangibles that Juwan brings by being who he is -- a member of one of the most iconic college basketball teams of all time and a (fairly recent) NBA Champion and NBA coach.

Juwan is going to bring a boat load of cachet to the program that only someone with his playing background could bring.  JB was great, as are a lot of these other coaches, but (if Warde actually choose Juwan) this is going to be a little different.  Risky, perhaps.  But, also with the potential to take Michigan higher than before because Juwan makes Michigan significantly sexier than JB ever could.  Remember,  these decisions are based, in large part, upon how a recruit feels about the coach he's going to play for.  If they perceived JB as a Goody-Two-Shoes Boy Scout (who won't pay them) they're going somewhere else.  Do you think they're going to perceive Juwan Howard that way?

Beilein had this program competing for the Big 10 every year.  He went to 2 NCAA finals in 5 years.  He developed players and recruited well.  Now we have a guy who has never coached at the any level. A guy who has never recruited or managed any kind of program.  His only credential is that he played at Michigan and played in the NBA.  I think people think that because of this the top 20 recruits will somehow now be interested in Michigan.  Unless we are willing to pay $$$, something Beilein refused to do, I don't see how this advances the program. Just my 2 cents.

I think Howard could land more players in the 25-75 range every cycle than Beilein did. Beilein's stringent structure followed him into recruiting. Beilein was a much better x's and o's coach than he was a recruiter. My hope is that Howard is good at x's and o's but really good at recruiting.

Some misguided fools on here.

1.  Howard will grow into this role - and that’s ok. He will need time, similar to the players, as they learn and adjust.  Give him the time.

2. Howard will attract quality recruits. Don’t be fooled into thinking otherwise. It will happen.

3. Players are excited. Many alumni are excited. Recruits will be excited. This will translate onto the court. Watch.
