Eh, IDK, I am assuming that title for Yaklich would have to be part of Howard’s negotiations.  I am quite certain that Howard wants to be The Man.  An assistant head coach would be a little tricky for somebody in his first HC position.

I disagree.

If the Michigan job is now a port for 3-5 years to train coaches AND players for the NBA it is a sad state of affairs.

If Howard wants to coach in the NBA she should stay right now.

Harbaugh made the decision to invest long-range.  If Howard can’t do that move on to a coach that respects the Michigan job and tradition as John Beilein did every second for many years.

Disagree with that. While the overt mission of University of Michigan is to conduct research and educate individuals there exists that expectation that it prepares individuals for further career dreams in a few years. Juwan may look to this opportunity as his personal professional education if you will while working as HC and want to keep potential prospects open.

If the AD wants to protect against that (him leaving for another coaching job) then in good faith offer him a 10 year contract with appropriate compensation and buyout. But implying we want him long term while only giving a 4 year contract guarantees as little as Howard saying he wants to be here forever while signing up for 4 years.

IM glad this is a coach the players will undoubtedly like. These guys definitely committed to Michigan thinking Beilein would be their coach for the entire time and since that's not happening at least they'll have an exciting replacement coach

I am fully on board with this - I just hope this time Warde uses some type of buyout language in a contract to keep NBA teams away for say - 5 years at least.

Context is NBA with billionaire owners who wouldn't have batted an eye at Barnes' $5 million buyout. Additionally, it's really not that difficult for a coach to force the issue. Also, let's not pretend that this is symbolic of the power of the buyout as opposed to being symbolic of UCLA, which could've easily paid the money but didn't.

Terrific...make it really big then.  Because if it doesn't serve as a speed bump for potential NBA hirer, then it at least raises a bunch of millions for the Michigan AD that it can use and go pay another coach's buyout to fill the now-vacant hole.

Employment contracts are a two way negotiation.  Perhaps what the AD felt was important was something other than the buyout and was willing to trade away the buyout to get something more favorable on other terms.

Also, the leverage each party has changes the tenor of the negotiations.  A brand new head coach won't have the ability to make demands that a Saban would.

Unless we were privy to the negotiations, we have no idea how the final terms of the deal were reached.

Just for the record, found yesterday that neither Beilein's previous deal nor Harbaugh's original had buyouts either - and those were negotiated by the unimpeachable Jim Hackett.

Maybe Michigan doesn't do buyouts? I dunno. It feels like they probably should.

Will be interesting to see what Jalen Wilson thinks of this hire. He scheduled a visit to UNC and I believe KU is in the mix as well.

A week ago, I was concerned we would get Howard and not a big time already-proven head coach.

Now I'm relieved we are getting Howard.

Well played, Warde.

Warde has run a pretty strong search. Almost nothing real leaked, he reached out to all the major homerun hires, took his time and is likely getting the guy with the most upside. That's a damn good search for late May in under two weeks.

I'm excited about Juwan although the way Webb was talking about Jordan's offense and player development this morning and pairing that with Yaklich's defense really has/had me thinking.

The only time I see giant white boxes are when my browser is bugging, rather than the site. Generally I haven't encountered this problem.

However, given your OP my post appears a bit condescending and I did not mean it to be, if taken that way. If anything else it's useful for other people to see the info.
