Wisconsin chancellor supposedly negotiated the deal between M and BIG

Submitted by doubleblue2 on November 16th, 2023 at 5:55 PM

Rumor has it the  Chancelor of Wisconsin played a big role in both parties coming to terms.
Supposedly after a heated head of universities call yesterday.
She is apparently a major bad ass.  Her background is in law, evidentiary law , athletics etc.
Apparently she made quite an impression on all involved.

That’s all I know.

Michigan gets the non-existent B1G investigation to go away (unless more is found by The NCAA so nothing really goes away) and The B1G gets their 3 game suspension of Jim, which just so happens to coincide with two of the hardest games on the schedule and a Maryland team that I refuse to overlook regardless of how they played against any other school. It's not a cakewalk when it's the week before OSU and focus is always gone while looking ahead.

If we assume that they didn't provide evidence of upper-staff knowing, the threat from the commissioner to ban them from the B1GCG has to have been there. Get banned from that and now the Playoff Committee can give an actual reason for leaving you out. Etc.

So they take the deal. That's the best case scenario for UM here. The alternative is that they have something bad and UM settled. Though, I'm not sure the wording supports that and they have to know it will still be used against them if that was the case so I think they knew they'd lose the TRO and the B1G threatening bans they'd 100% get the votes for is what UM is trying to avoid.

This whole situation has me sick to my stomach. I don't know what to believe in anymore.

I know I love our team and players. I just hope we can rally the troops and win out.

UW Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin was the dean of UCLA Law when I was on the faculty for a couple of years. I can confirm that she is indeed a powerhouse.

How she convinced M to hand the Big Ten a complete victory before the hearing, I have no idea. Not what I would have advised (though of course I wasn't privy to those discussions, and I'm sure they had their reasons).

WTF did she negotiate? Unless P-Titty comes out Sunday morning and says, "Suspension over, Go Blue, FU OSU!" all she did was negotiating us to STFU while the B1G doesn't have to defend their overreach here.

We look soft…as hell right now. It’s go hard, or go home, and I like going hard.. more than going home. Unless all that’s coming from this BS is a three game Harbaugh suspension Michigan should run every bit of this through the court system like Kansas. This equals complete demolishing of UM football teams Image now about to be labeled cheaters by everyone.

By capitulating to Pettiti and settling this case and accepting the three game Harbaugh regular season suspension, Michigan has the appearance of admitting guilt by Connor Stallion's actions.

Yes, you are correct that the team could be labeled as cheaters. This is a lose/lose situation for the University as well as the football program.

What happened to this high priced law firm out of DC they hired? I thought that Michigan was going to fight this to the bitter end. So much for that.

What I want to know is what did Michigan get in return to justify what appears on the surface to be a capitulation to the unjustified, immoral, and illogical punishment levied by the Big Ten.  This result has strongly damaged Michigan's valuable reputation, both in sports, and the overall brand.  Michigan would be stupid and weak to just "let this go" without some sort of strategy to repair the damage.  Winning out would solve a lot.  In the short term.  But in the absence of that, I hope that President Ono has assembled a "War Cabinet" to solve this long term.  I'm really pissed.

The only negotiation I can see from this would be for the B1G to relent next week and let Harbaugh coach against Ohio Slappy University.

Not sure what was negotiated otherwise.

We must be told that the judge would not grant the TRO.   No TRO then no coach on sideline.   It isn’t worth spending money to fight this then.  I was hoping he could be on the sideline for the game.  We will need to be there for him.

How so? Commish already has dealt the punishment, coming back with additional suspension with no new evidence doesn't seem likely, especially if a deal was struck. Let's not get too conspiracy minded. B1g never even Saber rattled missing CCG. Reported specifically that didn't want the players to suffer.

Situation sucks all around, but this outcome seems super unlikely.

As JUB keeps saying, "nobody knows anything".  Maybe the B1G has evidence of coaches above Coor Stalllions being involved.  Maybe M cut a deal to ensure postseason eligibility.  Maybe M has a binder and maybe they don't.  The thing is that the damage has been done and no one in the general public wants to hear anything about what the other schools are doing.  The ohio/Buttgers/Purdoo-doo thing went over like a lead balloon even though it seems worse than what Cor Stallllions was doing.  Maybe M has decided to accept the B1G punishment, win the B1G and national titles, and let everyone forget about all of this crap or at least let it fade a little.  Then, they can unleash the full power of the binder, a little at a time, while continuing to replenish it with information from private investigators.

There is no binder with anything that amounts to shit.  We know this because if there was, Michigan would I have used it.

The idea that there was ever some magic catalog with rock solid evidence of all the evils in which Michigans rivals have participated is fantastical thinking.

The idea that Michigan is “replenishing the binder” behind the scenes is just conspiracy theory shit.  Bureaucrats did what they do, which is the least work possible.  Hopefully Michigan decides to bail on the Big Ten as soon as they can, but there isn’t some secret plan in place to  use the magic bullet.

What exactly were the terms, because from my vantage point B1G imposed its will, I'm trying to see an upside for M and Harbaugh and so far none is visible.  Hard to laud anyone when there is little tangible evidence of any real accomplishment, at least as far as this situation.

My sister has a bunch of diplomas from some major institutions, doesn't make her a major bad ass (or even a minor one).

How about this for wild speculation:

UM figured they were not likely to win in court tomorrow.

In the negotiations with the B1G, UM says "drop this suspension or we are going scorched earth against the 6-9 teams that also did in-person scouting." The B1G retorts "do that and we'll levy further punishments into the postseason."

To avoid additional escalation that would drag the conference further through the mud in the eyes of the college football world, the UW Chancellor steps in to get everyone to stand down. B1G agrees to back off of the psycho punishments they were considering, and UM agrees to live with what has been dealt them so far.

Still not sure I'm happy with the result, but the scenario is possible. Or not.

I don’t get that. So if osu snitched they get off Scot free, but Michigan snitches to ‘ preserve the integrity of the sport’ they get punished for that?

Wait - so maybe 🤔 We have figured out a way for Jim to be back on the sidelines for OSU. They punished Michigan because he is the head coach but after a win this weekend Moore will have been the head coach for 3 games this year - so they can bring Harbaugh back as an temporary HC while Moore takes the University’s punishment as the acting HC. And we will announce this - 5 minutes before the game…

Drop news of a massive Harbaugh extension tomorrow, and I feel completely different about this (and the headlines shift to a power move by Michigan, instead of bending over).

Amaizing Blue

This is my best-case take on the situation.  Jim made the calculation that this team can beat Maryland and Ohio State without him on the sidelines on game day.  This deal assures that if that happens, he'll be on the sidelines for the Big Ten championship game and the playoff games after that.

He has confidence in Sherrone, the staff, and the team to take care of business and get through these next 9 days and 2 games, and believes that this decision is the one that gives us the best chance to win it all.

No smoking gun, no new evidence, just a clear calculation by a great football coach not ruled by emotion or appearances.  Trust Harbaugh, trust the team, Go Blue!

Nothing will happen to them, they won. The B1G conceded they won't fuck us over anymore than they already have on this particular issue. That sounds great until you look behind and you see your reputation and ability to compete has been compromised.

OSU dodges Harbaugh during the game and we should be grateful? No.

Their word is shit. They leaked information, timed things to maximize Michigan's pain. They were shady and petty. Fuck them, they're worthless. They couldn't even walk back any of their bullshit claims about player safety or anything.

When you win, you're more likely to keep doing what you're doing. So the B1G will do this again and they will have no shame about it.

You don’t get terrorist to stop attacking by giving into there demands.

You don’t get kidnappers to stop kidnapping by paying the ransom

You don’t get bullies to stop bullying by giving them your fruit cup

This is a pretty universal rule threw all aspects of life.  The only thing the Big10 and media learned is that Michigan can be bullied and will give into whatever demands are made if it thinks it will get them out of there current predicament with zero thought towards future encounters or damage done.
