Who should be SM hires for the coordinator jobs?

Submitted by blueandmaizeballs on January 25th, 2024 at 1:40 PM

Since Moore is the HC who should be his hires for the open positions?   From what is being said Newsome is going to be the OL Coach and others probably stay where they are except for some responsibilities becoming different.   Anyone have ideas about who is a good OC and DC?   Heard the Ravens LB coach is another guy in the MM and JM realm.

I might get negged for this because people still don't think Moore should be the HC but he is so let's talk about some good hires from him to bring along.

I really would love it if Jay Harbaugh wanted to stay in college coaching. Dude seems to be the most inter-changeable position coach ever - safeties were terrific this year, awesome at special teams, he just really gives a head coach some leeway in their other hires.

I wonder if he'd make a fine DC? I bet he has Minter's stuff down cold.

We're dreaming, right?

OC: Joe Brady

DC: Wink Martindale

Give all the remaining assistants a significant bump in salary to stay because Wink and Joe would be in A2 for a year or two at the most. That's worked out okay on the DC side recently.

Back of the money truck to Larry Foote to be LB/DC. (either co-DC with Clink or full and give Clink a different title/raise)

Rehire Partridge as S/Special Teams Coach.

Newsome to OL Coach.

Joe Moorehead to OC (I have no opinions on this as of now)

TE coach...I guess Nick Sheridan?

Because he sucks as an OC that is why he was fired by the Ravens.   Or they gave him the option to resign.  If you can't have an offense that is successful with Lamar Jackson then you need to go.   He isn't innovative enough and is old and hates recruiting.    Which is a major no no for any hire at Michigan.

Wow. It's true Miles.

That means he was only like 35 when he was Jim's OC at Stanford. I don't know if I should be mortified or impressed.

I'll be both!

BTW - no thank you to any Greg Roman ideas. I'm curious if Jim staffs him up somewhere on his Chargers crew tho.

They need to fight hard to retain Minter. Michigan brings back a ton of talent on the defensive side; they could easily have a top 5 defense or better again next year if they find a way to bring Minter back. You would have to get pretty creative to fight off Harbaugh and the Chargers -- he obviously wants to be a head coach sooner rather than later so you would have to convice him the staying in college will benefit him long term. I'm not conviced that Warde is the guy who can make that sale.

On the offensive side, it feels like you need to find some experience. With Harbaugh gone, there's approximately 1 year of OC/offensive play calling experience on the entire coaching staff.

I know the prevailing sentiment appears to be that retaining the "culture" is more than enough to make up for any lack of coaching experience, recruiting, NIL, etc, but I'm at little apprehensive to throw 100% our our eggs into the "culture" basket.

To be fair they all said Harbaugh was a cheater but now he is going to the NFL nobody uses that label or says a word about it anymore. Nobody writes an article about Chargers hiring such a shameful cheater and the head of the biggest football scandal ever. Strange I wonder what happened that once he put a Chargers cap on he wasnt that guy anymore? Hmm curious.

Is there something out there saying Minter  wants to be a HC in the next couple of years?

I think as of now he truly likes being a great DC and is great with the Xand Os and game planning.   But those don't always make a good HC.  Maybe Minter is a great HC in the future I have no idea but if Minter is wanting to go to the NFL then it would take a hell of a lot of money to keep him at Michigan.   Money Michigan won't pay to keep him as he can get 2-3 mill in the NFL and I can't see Michigan paying him 4 mill or more

How about getting negged for using initials. Posters who are too lazy to spell a name are a big pet peeve. And not wanting Sherrone as the head coach is enough of a reason to neg you. Wanting to throw away the culture they’ve built over the last 3-4 years is mind boggling to me.

Throw the bank at Minter. If he still leaves, Clink is up.

On offense, get a coach who can run a balanced attack that combined aspects of the existing ball-control power running offense with a bit more dynamic passing. By doing so, the offense should be able to be a bit more productive while also (in time) making the offense harder to stop since defenses won’t be able to stack the box as much.

Wonder if Brian Griese will be interested in coming back as the OC/QB coach. He is interviewing for Saints' OC, may not like recruiting.

Moore is going to have to balance out what is best for continuity with what is best for the long term success of the team.

From the defensive side of the ball, I would love for Minter to return but I believe he will go with Jim.  With that being said, it sounds like the logical thing would be to either promote Clink or Elston.  Something tells me they may promote both to Co-DC but with Clink as the main guy (go with the youth movement)

As for the OC, I honest don't think it's Hart.  The cold reality is that he has never been more than a RB coach and the move to OC is a BIG jump.  He has to get a handle on the passing game, play design, play creation, and feel for the game.  I think moving to an OC role is too big a jump especially when you have a first time HC as well.   What I see happening is that if Moore doesn't go outside to find an OC, that Campbell moves into that roll (as he was an OC before at ODU) and that Hart may get a promotion as Co-OC and continue to be the RB Coach and coordinator.

From a defensive stand point, nothing really has to change, as we have a ton of talent coming back.  They just need to find depth and have some of the guys coming of redshirts to step up.

As for the offense, my gut tells me that it's a toss up between Orji and Denegal.  I wouldn't be shocked if they split time in the Fresno State Game to see who the "starter" is and it also would NOT shock me if they deploy the 2 QB system that was popular back in the 90's and early 2000's. Denegal and Orji are so different that the offense has to change depending on who is in the game.

With Denegal, the offense can stay somewhat similar to what it is today, since he is more of a prototype drop back passer with some mobility.  As for Orji, I would love to see them watch a ton of film on the the JT Barrett offense at Ohio State and the Tim Tebow/Alex Smith Offense from Urban Meyer.  I think Orji, in that kind of offense could be devastating for opposing defenses.  Make him a 1 to 2 read QB and then take off.  However, in that offense, they are going to have to scheme guys open, which is something we haven't seen a lot of over the years BUT, we actually saw quiet a bit of in the Alabama game.

It's also important to note that Moore also gets a bit more leeway now as well with the expanded playoffs.  He doesn't have to go undefeated and frankly a 2 loss Michigan time is probably in the playoff most years.

100% behind this offensive philosophy next year.

Joe Moorhead and D’Anton Lynn would be home runs in my opinion.

Moorhead is at a dead end job right now (4-20 through two seasons at Akron and is only making $620k). So seems he might be intrigued by an OC job at Michigan making north of $1 million.

D’Anton Lynn is a Ravens guy, coached UCLAs defense last year and was just hired by USC. Probably a much tougher pull, and USC is paying him $2 million per year so getting him would be costly.

Moore deserves and will more than likely get the job, but currently it is not official.  I read on WolverineWire that it will be announced in the next 7-10 days.
