What was your first Michigan Football game?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on April 27th, 2020 at 12:16 PM

9-18-2004 vs San Diego State, a 24-21 win. Tight game and a week after our offense shat the bed against an ND team that turned out to be bad. Started off so promising with a TD bomb to Braylon the first play. Nothing much the rest of the way, SDSU even led at one point. This was the coming out game for 3 star freshman Mike Hart who had his first 100-yard game.

Season ended in a B1G Championship and Rose Bowl appearance.

I was 9 years old (bottom right) What about you?

1964. Michigan defeated Navy and defending Heisman winner Roger Staubach. They went on to win the Big Ten Championship and the Rose Bowl. A great beginning to my almost 60 years of being a fan.

1999 vs Northwestern at 5 years old. I fell asleep during the second half.

I was also at SDSU in 2004, definitely a snoozer after a bad loss to Tyrone Willingham the week before. He beat us and was still fired.

October 3, 1970 vs. Texas A&M. I was less than a year old. My mom recalls I slept soundly throughout the entire 2nd half. I sang The Victors after the 14-10 triumph with an enthusiasm previously unknown to mankind (not). Cue Reese Witherspoon quote directed to my mother: "You brought a baby.."

1997 #3 Michigan vs #5 Texas A&M.

Curtis Dickey (3x NCAA 60-yd. dash winner), George Woodard (~300 lb FB) and Tony Franklin (barefoot kicker) were stars for A&M.

Ricky Leach, Russell Davis and Harlan Huckleby led the offense for Meeeechigan.

First time in a big time college stadium. Walking into the stadium filled with 104,000 screaming fans was the moment I became a Michigan Football fan.

Final Score: M 41 - A&M 3

First game - SEpt 24, 2005 at Wisconsin ( should of blown Wisconsi n out instead lost a close 23-20 game with all they did was 3 yards a run and 3 yards pass , it was so predictable to the tght end or the running back to the right )

First Home Game - Central Michigan 2006- first game interrupted by weather ever at Michigan Stadium

Favorite Game - Under the Lights I vs ND and 2019 game vs ND in the Rain

Worst game - any game I've been to at Camp randall I hate Wisconsin almost as much as OSU and ND and MSU)  or the MSU game of 2010

Favorite road Game - Indiana

WORST B1G STADIUM - RYAN FIELD ( what a dump )

1969 Bo’s first loss to Missouri. My brother was a freshman and it was “Parent’s Day”, so my dad and I went. All I remember is going to the 50 yd. line after the game to listen to the band and then having the best pizza ever afterwards(Lamplighter?).

2010 against Illinois at home. Michigan is undefeated at home when I'm in attendance. Harbaugh is 2-0 against top 10 teams when I'm in attendance. So he only wins the big games when I'm watching in person.

I was a big Michigan fan as a kid but my parents were not much into college football. One time my Uncle was going to take me to the Navy game in '72, I would have been 9 years old at the time but his gf changed her mind and decided to go with him. I was going to go when I was in high school but I had a part time job on the weekends, so I could not go until I was a freshman at Michigan in the fall of '81.

I wish I knew for sure. I believe it was 2001 vs Minnesota. But it may have been 2004 vs Minnesota. Or maybe it wasn’t Minnesota at all! I do know I sat by an old lady who had tickets for decades, and gave me peanut M&Ms that she brought in a plastic baggie.

September 24, 1994.
9 year old me went with my Dad, my uncle and my cousin to watch Michigan take on Colorado.

I don't remember who had the idea to leave early "to beat traffic" but we did.
My uncle drove, they had a conversion van back then with a little built-in TV. Small, black and white.

We listened to (watched? I remember watching, but its possible that is a false memory) the last play sitting in traffic not too far from the Big House.

Sept. 11, 1982 - Michigan v Wisconsin, season opener of my freshman year. I have absolutely no recollection of the game itself, but when the MMB came out on the field and then proceeded to march towards Section 33 playing the intro to The Victors, well, that was when this guy from a family of Spartys was reborn as a Wolverine.

1964. 24-7 win over Air Force. The win over Staubach's Navy, which others have mentioned, was my second.

I was an exchange student from Ireland, come for my master's degree. Though I had played rugby before, this was the first game of American football I had ever watched, and I was fortunate to be introduced to it during such a successful year. There were some memorable plays on the field, but it was the experience of being seated among the other student supporters that has had the greatest long-term impact for me.

October 22, 1960. Michigan vs. Minnesota. Michigan lost 10-0. I was a Boy Scout doing usher duty (yes, they used to do that back then) at the top of the North end of the stadium. It was also the day I became a life-long Michigan fan and the first of many stadium ushering assignments I volunteered for during the next two years. The feeling was similar to that first time I walked into Tiger Stadium and was overwhelmed by the bright lights, grass greener than I ever knew existed, and the sight of my favorite player shagging flies in right field.

Dave Glinka was the QB, Bill Freehan was playing TE, and a diminutive local named Dennis Fitzgerald, along with the team's leading rusher, Bennie McRae, played HBs. Fumbles were abundant (5) and a couple interceptions were also tossed, so Michigan's offense was in neutral all day. I believe there was a pile of pulled-out hair at Bump Elliott's feet by the end of the game.

Apparently I am old now.

9/29/2001.  Michigan hammered the best Illinois team of the decade.  Kurt Kittner led the Illini to a 10-2 record and number 12 ranking.  Post 9/11 had skinny crowds.  The most room I've ever had at the Big House.  Nose bleed seats (5 rows from the top) in the SW corner.  First anniversary gift from the love of my life.  Walking in from the concourse was amazing.

No joke, this was my first game too.

App State 2007 was my second. If I recall correctly, Comcast didn't carry BTN at the time, so my dad and I figured we would go and watch for a change. Welp...

I don’t recall but my parents as students went to every game and brought me as a baby with them. I was passed around by the coeds. I was a lucky young man.

1995 ohio.

Near midfield about 20 rows back. After the awesome 313 yard rushing performance and destruction of their perfect season, we entered the field with player families.

Walked up the tunnel arm and arm with Will Carr's Grandma lol.

What a day :)

1984 at the shoe. I had just moved to godforsaken Ohio and was 8.  Lost Something like 20-6.  That was the season Harbaugh got hurt and Zurbrug took over.  Then lost to BYU in the Holiday Bowl.
I’m 1-3 in person at “The Game.”  The only win I was there for was the silly ‘11 game.  Wonder how many people on this site are 0-12 in person?  I think the only thing more depressing than Covid is how we get owned every November twenty-something.  God I hate Ohio.

1994 vs Purdue when I was 14. Don’t remember too much except:

I was freezing cold and it snowed like a mofo.  I remember sitting next to the students and saw lots of frozen marshmallows being thrown.

My next game was The Horror I believe.  Now I attend at least one game per year regularly..starting 5 years ago.

October 11, 1969 9th ranked- 3-0 Purdue led by All American QB candidate Mike Phipps at unranked 2-1 Michigan. Bo played an extra defensive back most of the game, confused Phipps into a bunch of interceptions and the good guys pull a 31-20 upset.

1985 vs Notre Dame. 20-12 victory.

The 1985 team was a hell of a team. 10-1-1. Finished #2 in the polls.

I started as a freshman with the #2 football team and ended with the basketball team winning March Madness. Pretty good ride.

September 24, 1988 against Wake Forest.  I was a sophomore in HS with goals of going to Michigan (I got accepted to engineering school in 1990).  My brother was a freshman at Michigan.  I vividly remember that day.  We sat in the corner end zone on the opposite end of the field as the student section.  I remember thinking how the student section was so much louder than the rest of the crowd when Michigan made a TD or big play.  Awesome experience.

September 8 1979  Northwestern came to Ann Arbor and got a beating. That was my first game and most memorable season. They went 8/4 but it was the year of the Bo / Corso classic. Great memories.
