What are the 3 Most Important Factors for a Michigan Win against OSU?

Submitted by WalterWhite_88 on November 22nd, 2023 at 6:59 PM

What do you think are the 3 most important factors that will determine whether Michigan wins or not vs the Buckeyes? Here's mine:

  • Stop Trevyon Henderson. If he is able to consistently get 5-8 yard chunks in a 5 or 6 man box, then that's gonna be a big problem for us, as we'll have to bring more players into the box, leaving us vulnerable to the pass.
  • Double team MHJ on every play. Make someone else beat us. I still think that Will Johnson should single cover Egbuka and use some double team combination against MHJ, because we're asking for trouble to put Will Johnson solo on MHJ.
  • How does our pass protection do against OSU's pass rush? Need to buy JJ time to make some big throws or at least give him the opportunity to escape the pocket and improvise.

1.  Effective coverage schemes against OSU receivers.

2.  Heavy and consistent pressure on McCord.

3.  A creative offensive scheme in which everything we have been saving is rolled out.  Play-action passes, especially.  J. J. must run.

Make Kyle McCord regret the day he decided to start playing football. McCord has proven himself to be serviceable, but he's one of the worst QBs in the country when facing pressure, and OSU hasn't seen a pass rush like ours. Harrison Jr. can't have a great game if McCord can't get a decent throw in his direction.

If we can do that, we'll win the game handily.

All of the cliche stuff...

1. Control the line of scrimmage.

2. Win the turnover battle.

3. Dominate special teams.

As for the game, It think offensively we have to control the clock and stay ahead of schedule.

I think OSU is going to sit back to prevent the big play. If that's the case, run right at them. If they want to die a slow death, don't stop them.

If they want to force McCarthy to beat them, I'll take that bet 10 times out of 10. JJ, at home, refocused? That sounds like 300 yards passing.

But I think they sit back and "make us earn it." Which if that's the case, no penalties, just wear them out.

...defensively, I'd start by straight doubling Harrison Jr. with Wallace and a safety and putting Will Johnson on Egbuka, straight up.

More than anything, we HAVE to get pressure on McCord and it has to be with 4. If we blitz Barrett, someone has to drop out.

Actually, no, more than anything we need to stop the run. Next would be pressure with 4. But if we stop the run and put OSU in "and long" situations...it helps the DBs and the EDGE guys.

Lets try a formation like this and let Grant in at the second fullback for a series or two...see if any of the back 7 wants to fill a gap with that coming down the tracks.

All about making the right choices in game.

- Coaches reading what OSU is giving us defensively and aggressively attacking it.  Last year proved that they can't cover everything we can do offensively.  Don't just keep running Edwards into an eight-man box or the equivalent.  Play calls can't wait until third quarter adjustments to exploit the weak links.

- RPO game. Call real reads and then JJ makes them well. If we end up with 50+ QB rushing yds, we're going to put points on the board.

- Defensively have patience and prioritize containing every single play.  Get QB pressure, since McCord isn't going to beat you with his legs, but keep everything else in front of us.

Ohio State is in a fragile place mentally. They don't know if McCord is ready for the pressure, and he already didn't look good against ND and PSU. This game is a whole other level

On defense,, theY have no reason to be confident they can stop our running game. If we rip off chunk runs in the first quarter, serious doubt will start to creep in.

I compared FFFF from 2021, 22, and 23. All I can say is, if we were able to hold that Death Star offense (they had 6 shield players and 10 total Star-up players), with only 3 star players on our defense; we should be able to do more or better this year. I know the solution that year was having two elite pass rushers, but we were also able to squelch the run aside from 2 early big runs from Henderson.

I still think the combination of Wilson, Olave, and Smith-Njigba pose a greater threat than MHJ, Egbuka, and Stover. Harrison is the best of all 6, but Wilson and Olave are clearly better than Egbuka and JSN was a menace in the slot. Also, Stroud is superior to McCord.

Will Johnson is better than Turner Green or Gray but Wallace is a clear downgrade at #2. The best scenario is that McBurrows has been showing out at practice and Mikey can be enough and can be physical with Harrison and have Moore over the top and let Will man up Egbuka.

Pass rush is crucial; which is much better this year than last.

All in all talent wise we are better than the last two years, and this is their worst team of the past 3 seasons. If we play to our ability, we will win. It won’t take anything special. We do our job and we are the better team.

Play action passes that work…stop their running game with six in the box….Harbaugh gets magically reinstated

Man if that last one can happen….I would be ecstatic.  Otherwise…I’m really, really concerned…

DO NOT TURTLE

DO NOT TURTLE

DO NOT TURTLE

Michigan won the last two years because they kept up with Ohio State on the scoreboard.  Michigan never got down more than one score in either year, and they only punted once in the second half last year, and they did not punt at all in the second half in 2021.

Michigan did not just play keep-away on offense, they paid off their drives with scores, most of them touchdowns.

Ohio State actually played pretty well on offense but Michigan kept up and kept the pressure on.  That is what it takes.

Pretty simple every single snap dominate the man in front of you. If all Michigans guys on the field do this we are brewing a recipe for success. Go Blue annihilate McCord early, and often!

1.  No turnovers / mistakes / penalties at crucial times

2.  Get a lead and force Ohio to play from behind (limit their running, keep them one-dimensional)

3.  Score on special teams and/or defense

Control the line of scrimmage.  Our DL is set up to make OSU's center the Featured Player in Ten-Man Football; if we can pay that off they'll have a long day.

If our tackles hold up against JTT and friends, their defense will have a long day as well.

If the team can shake off the lack of Harbaugh and focus on what they can do, we'll be fine.

I think we'll need two of those things to pay off, plus some luck.  Here's hoping they've remembered to empty their pockets!
