What's your worst memory ever going to a Michigan game?

Submitted by Toby Flenderson on December 17th, 2022 at 8:09 AM

With Christmas 8 days away, Festivus 6 days away, Hannukah 1 day away, and Kwanza 9 days away, i think we need some TOXICITY here on the board.

What is your worst experience or memory going to Michigan stadium for a football game? Mine was when I was 17 and went to the air force game. A bunch of old heads/racists around me telling Denard to cut his hair and spilling bbq sauce on my Chad Henne jersey.

My first Big House game ever was the near miss against UMass in 2010. But even worse, I was at the near miss againt awful Akron in 2013.

I have told a younger friend of mine who is about 20 years old that he doesn't truly understand how much this current run means to me since he is a little too young to remember the height of the RichRod/Hoke debacle.

Well, at least the Tigers were good back then.

2001 OSU, my first OSU game.

Team booed off the field at end of 1st half, (down 21-0 I think) with many calling for QB change to Jermaine Gonzales. Navarre was putrid.

Comeback in second half led by Navarre who pretty much did nothing but throw to Marquise Walker, who had one of the best days a UM wide receiver ever had.

Except for the drop in the endzone (legit “drop” … hit him right on the 4), no points on drive after Epstein missed a short FG, lose by 6.

BWW Bowl in Tempe vs KSU. Garbage nosebleed seats. Weak effort/embarrassing loss. Jackass Tempe cops.

Only time I’ve ever seen Michigan lose a football game in person, so easily the worst.

2018 Outback Bowl

My wife's first Michigan game. Freezing rain in Tampa. Team was dejected after the OSU loss. Key players injured. The offense played like such ass it inspired this from Brian in the game column:

Whatever

I don't know how people get mad about this shit still. I just turn off, because for the last decade Michigan football has been either a disappointment or in a brief interim period that sets you up to be disappointed. But yes many many people still get fucking furious about Michigan football for some reason.

I'm tired of talking about it. I'm tired of this cycle that always seems to be at the bottom. I'm tired of this toxic-ass fanbase screaming at stuff. I could muster some takes, I guess, but I've already said them and anyway they seem beside the point. December was nice since it lacked football. 2018, so far, is bad because it had football.

Crazy that wasn't even all that long ago. Ryan Hayes signed his letter of intent just months before.

My first game as a freshman was Sept. 1, 2007.

I also got a pretty nasty sunburn.

Later that same year, I had the privilege of freezing to death while Beanie Wells busted a long run through a vacated second level at the gap for a back-breaking Ohio State touchdown.

I twice witnessed MSU marching into Ann Arbor and dominating in a way no one had seen since the Duffy Daugherty years.

I was present for Northwestern 2008 in the freezing rain.

I saw Tate Forcier hand Ohio State the ball 5 times in a Tresselball classic that we lost 21-10.

I watched a nailbiter senior year over UMass with a group of UMass undergrads in front of me IN THE STUDENT SECTION.

My last home game as a senior was Scott Tolzien not bothering to throw a pass in the second half while GERG tickled Kenny Demens with a stuffed beaver.

This year at the CSU game. My youngest (8 yr old) wanted to sit near the end zone so he could see touchdowns better. I usually like to sit as close to the gray hairs as possible. This experience confirmed that. It was a raucous group who were over inebriated and hitting dap pens the entire time. Late arrivers even women and children were given a terrible time. People were not in the proper section and the ushers were brought in no less than three times after the people in the wrong gave expletive ladened replies to them. It was disgusting and we left before halftime.

I was at App State with my 1.5 y/o daughter. She didn't attend another M game until @ Rutgers last month.

Toledo 2008

NW 2010 and Purdue 1995 were wins but miserable weather

@ MSU 1995 @ OSU 1998

Vacationing in Michigan the end of August, driving back to New York, I checked the schedule, saw UM had a game, thought it'd be fun for the family, so we stayed over a day to see a game against a school called App State.

[On the other hand: same scenario a different year, took in a Tigers game when they were really bad, so easy to get cheap seats behind home plate for a game against the Yankees, saw Brandon Inge hit a walk-off homer.]

Trouble with snap. Went with a split group of friends half sparty half good guys.  I bet the Michigan ML too. The worst ride home

I was sitting 15 rows up on the goal line when MSU tackled Desmond in the end zone. No flag. Unbelievable.

I also remember going to a game at Indiana in 1987. 40-50 MPH winds drove torrential rains into my face for 3 straight hours. I wore glasses. 5 minutes into the game and it was impossible to dry them off and see clearly. And it was the only time we lost to IU between ‘68 and ‘19.

Too easy: 2010 Iowa. My now wife and I had just started dating and this was the first game I took her to. Tailgated at AAGOC all morning and had an awesome time. Went into the game pretty well lubricated for a 3:30 kickoff.

Probably midway through Q1 I started getting whiffs of the most awful gas I’ve ever smelled in my entire life. I’m talking burning nostrils, tears in eyes, ruining my game flatulence. This continued on for the entirety of the game. As soon as one dissipated, the next was upon me.
Michigan did just enough in the 4th Quarter to force me to sit through the entire loss, despite it never really being competitive. I left the game miserably dehydrated, hungover, tired, and absolutely certain my sinuses had sustained irrevocable damage.

Five years later my wife admitted that it was her that ruined the 2010 game.

The Trouble With The Snap Game. Never felt good the entire fourth quarter and all M had to do was get one stinking first down to seal it.

Then whomever ran special teams decided to put two gunners, while Sparty had no one back, rushed all 11, including runner over the long snapper.

In hindsight, they should have kept the offense on the field for the 4th down play to keep Sparty honest, then pooch kicked with ole Dr. Jake.

The stadium was eerily quiet for a good 15 minutes. Stunned silence. The walk back to the car with my friends was even quieter except for a line uttered we shall never forget: "I feel like I've been jail-sexed by angry woodpeckers"

There had to have been at least five fights on the way back to the car as well, drunk Michigan fans fighting drunk Sparty fans.

I suppose from a meteorological perspective, it's 1995 Purdue. We experienced all four seasons in a few hours, and of course, I dressed for the 65 degrees at tailgating, not the 35 degrees at the end....in the 45-50 MPH gusts.

I was at The Horror, and the Dennis Dixon Show. Those sucked for the mood in the place alone. Does anyone else remember the downpour for a while during the Oregon game? Felt about right.

For a feeling of utter haplessness and hopelessness, the 2008 Toledo game and probably the Northwestern game later that year, which was another sullen experience amplified by the weather.

Oh, the memories....

Purdue game was by far the worst weather game I have ever attended.  Think the final score was 5-0.  Decided early on to watch on TV instead of in person.  Only game ever that weather has chased me out of stadium of my own accord (got forced out against Utah and didn't return)

Taking my wife to her first um vs osu game. Tate forcier fumbling the ball everywhere. Weirdly we were in that game for a while. The stadium was HALF red. While thing was a fucking embarrassment.

Also, Donovan McNabb taking our will to live and putting out the blueprint to beat us for the next 25 years.

Lastly, went to Colorado state this year. It was so so hot, took forever to get in the stadium. My back was exhausted by halftime and we bailed. Couldn't find a cab and walked all the way to the hotel. I was wiped. Realized how old I've gotten. More of an "introspective" worst.

It was a "disappointing" year for UM with two early non-conference ties, losing to OSU and losing in their first non-Rose Bowl bowl. I remember snowmobiling in the dark after the Orange Bowl loss.

They seemed to take it out on their other conference home opponents: NW 69-0, Indiana 55-7, and Purdue 28-0

The permanent stamping of my personal BPONE comes from two games and a weird fandom coincidence attending them:

1. 1989 1v2 ND (to hell with them) at M.  A miserable slog of a game on a cold rainy day in Ann Arbor. Raghib Ismail has already returned the second half opening kick off for a TD. UM has lost its starting quarterback, but Elvis puts together a drive to pull us within one score. As UM kicks off, I hear a drunken voice behind me bellow out "he can't do it again", then after a pause and a weird gulping sound as the kick settles into Ismail's hands "can he?".

2. 1994 7v4 Colorado at M.  A thrilling game in which our beloved Wolverines played a spectacular third quarter to seemingly take over the game. A series of mishaps however, lead to Colorado having one final shot. Just prior to the snap of that final play, I hear a drunken voice behind me bellow out "he can't even throw it that far," a pause, as Kordell Stewart takes the snap and rolls, "can he?".

Before the damn play ended, I just knew...

Ugh.

The Horror was the only game I got to attend that season. So… that.

Or maybe the 2014 Utah game where Hoke’s Michigan really looked terrible and the game was delayed by 2.5 hours by torrential rain, then finished late at night with essential no Michigan fans (I saw the end in a hotel bar. Game was obviously over before that. Only game I ever left early).

Prior to The Horror, I had purchased tickets to the Oregon game the following week, of course thinking I’d be seeing a top 5 Michigan team facing off against a strong non-conference opponent.

What I didn’t know is that I had actually purchased the tickets from an Oregon fan, so I was surrounded by their fans. Fortunately, they were actually pretty nice and educated me on the correct way to see Oregon.

Overall it was still a miserable experience following the previous game. Little did we know at the time just what that would portend as far as the next decade plus if Michigan football.

Colorato-Michigan, 1994.  Standing on my seat behind the south goal posts after Mike Westbrook's catch, looking for a flag, or anything for that matter, that would mean the apparent outcome would be reversed.  I felt like it was a combo gut and dong punch.
