They mentioned this is the 5th championship game matchup between the Big East and Big Ten.  That comment immediately made me think of the other four.  Three of those involved Michigan with one fantastic memory, one extremely bitter memory and one tip of the cap, getting beat by a better team memory.

What a great post!  Can’t argue with Gary Grant/Jalen Rose/Trey Burke/Chris Webber/Juwan Howard/Rudy T at any of their respective positions but, the first five that come to mind for my starting five are PG Rickey Green, SG Cazzie Russell, SF Glen Rice (Rice and Russell are the only non-negotiables IMO), PF I guess Chris Webber, and C Roy Tarpley (people forget or are too young to realize how dominant he was).  Either Rose, Webber or Howard needs to be included.  I think Jalen is probably most deserving but I have a hard time leaving Rickey Green out.

In addition to many of the memories already mentioned, Pistons-Celtics 1987 game 5.  Went from winning the game on Rodman’s defensive play (and likely the series with game 6 in Detroit) to losing the game (and essentially the series) on Isiah’s inbounding mistake within a matter of seconds.

Reading this while sitting in the Minneapolis airport waiting for my flight home to Indy.  Indy is a very easy  airport to get in and out of, which is the most important thing to me.

OT response, but if you graduated from Harrison in ‘85, I assume you know the Turnquist family.  I was good friends (kind of dated) with Sandy, who graduated in ‘85 but also knew her older brothers who both played football there.

I was working at a school in Colorado at the height of the Wings-Ava rivalry (I always called them the Nordiques, which did not win friends and influence people).  Anyway, I was asked by the mom of a 4th grader if I would be willing to use her two tickets and take him to Red Wings-Avs game on a Saturday afternoon when she had to work (flight attendant, and a single mom of a good kid who struggled fitting in, but loved hockey - especially the Ava).  I was actually honored and took him to the game.  That turned out to be the game where Hasek skated down the ice and slid before getting to Roy.  Anyway, I’m not proud of this but I was only like 29 or 30, and I could not keep my fandom in check.  I ended up yelling back and forth with a fourth grader who was in desperate need of a male role model.  Anyway, I was not the best role model that day, but we both had a good time and we actually bonded over that experience.  Sometimes, good can come from hate (if the hate is only sports-related)

I realize I’m getting old in…

I realize I’m getting old in various situations.  Sometimes I recognize I need to change.  Sometimes I recognize I don’t want to change and I don’t mind getting older.  Every once in a while, like now, I recognize how completely disregarded I am by something I have been loyal to for years.  The NFL is more interested in making money short term than keeping longtime loyal fans.  It sucks.  I personally think there’s more to life than generating revenue.  I also know my experience and my feelings mean nothing.  I probably won’t watch the streaming games and I’ll generally watch less NFL as a result.  Oh well.

So….The ACC regular season champion is decided by the Pitt-Miami game and espn has college game day live from Chapel Hill, with their prime time game being for 4th through 7th place positioning in the same conference.  How are we supposed to believe they have any kind of realistic view of college basketball?

I have lived in the Indy…

I have lived in the Indy area for 11 years and I think this post is spot on and super useful.  My only minor local quibble is that, while Wee Mac is Sun King’s best beer, I believe Sun King has a few other very good beers.  We went to the game last year and hung out outside under heat lamps at the Taxman downtown.  If you like Belgian style beers, they are the best in the area.  The food is decent too and it’s walkable to Lucas Oil, but just tucked away enough to likely not be overcrowded.  Also, duckpin bowling in Fountain Square is a great way to spend some time Saturday during the day.

I would say Hutchinson but, if it didn’t have to be limited to the Harbaugh era, could you imagine adding Charles Woodson to this team?

Nothing like commenting on a 7-year old post, but I’m making this recipe today, just like I have every fall since this post.  The recipe is amazing!  Using KY Bourbon Barrel Ale today for the first time.  I’ve always used Abita Brown before.  Thank you for this recipe and the detailed pics.

Basketball:  Michigan, MSU, Purdue, Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern

Unrelated, but currently on a road trip through this weekend that will get me within one stadium of seeing all of the MLB ballparks.  It feels good to be closing in on a lifelong goal even if it’s not quite on par with curing cancer or saving the planet.

Awesome coach and awesome person!  Don’t post much but have to post this - my late brother (UM Med) was the Sports Medicine Director for his career at UCONN.  He, unfortunately, can’t speak on this now but I know for a fact that Coach Penders is legit in his eyes - which makes him legit in mine (if you knew my brother, you would know that his judgment in these things is worth listening to.

Fenway is worth it -…

Fenway is worth it - definitely encourage you to do it.  As for old Tiger Stadium, it is my very biased favorite.  The best baseball game experience I’ve had to this point in my life is watching Frank Tanana shut out the Blue Jays while Larry Herndon hit a solo home run and the Tigers won the division on the last day of the 1987 season 1-0.  As an aside, I also watched Michigan blowout Wisconsin the day before.  Great great sports weekend!

I’ve lost my parents, one…

I’ve lost my parents, one sibling, and both parents-in-law over the past few years and it’s sped up my timeline for a few things as well.  My wife and I are taking an 8-day trip to Houston, Dallas (Arlington), and Phoenix during early August to see baseball games.  After that, the Twins will be the only MLB stadium I haven’t seen a game in.  I’m hoping to get there late this summer or early fall.

It’s getting harder and…

It’s getting harder and harder to care about college athletics.  I guess that’s a good thing since I have more important priorities in my life, but it’s still a little sad every time I’m reminded college athletics are meaningless even to those who participate these days.

Barry Sanders was great to watch and put up amazing numbers.  His career stats are great as is but could have been the best in Detroit sports history if he had played 4-5 more seasons.

In my opinion, this is the greatest non-Gordie Howe career statistical achievement in Detroit professional sports history.

My wife and I sat next to…

My wife and I sat next to his dad, Verge, at a bar at Notre Dame during the first weekend of the NCAA baseball tournament in June.  It was also the first weekend of campus recruiting visits, which is why he was there.  He was very personable and also not shy about sharing his views.  He has two sons who are big-time recruits.  He also works in the LSU AD, although if you google him you can see that many question why LSU continues to employ him.  He repeatedly stated that he was only visiting Notre Dame because Marcus Freeman is a good friend and that OSU recruits the right way, like the SEC does.  Hope this is a big weekend with so many big recruits on campus though.

Should have read your comment before posting mine.  That Invaders game was so much fun.  I was there too.  It was something like 65,000 in attendance and, without googling, the score was something like 63-19 or 63-20.

The most electric atmosphere…

The most electric atmosphere I experienced at the Silverdome was watching the Panthers destroy the Oakland Invaders to advance to the USFL championship game.  I still can’t get the cheesy Panthers’ song out of my head (to the tune of “This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land” included the lyrics ...”from Bobby Hebert to Anthony Carter”).  Anyway, I loved the first 2 years of the Panthers in the USFL.

Not all are welcome.  Sports content is limited due to pandemic and other circumstances.  This was (and hopefully will be again) a great site for busy people to take a break from stressful reality by reading mostly unimportant entertainment-based sports content.   IN the words of Kramer, when speaking about Roy the dentist, I ave a wife, a job, and lots of other stuff.  Reading a sports blog will either bring me joyful distraction or I won’t read it.

Great pick by the Lions!  Be elite at something.  The OL is already pretty good and it’s young. This is the one unit the Lions have that can become elite soon.  An elite young OL is a nice thing to build around - and it’s the position group with the best chance for a long career together.

My wife and I are about to close on a cash out refinance (cash out to pay off mortgage on a second home) and we are replacing one mortgage with 28 years left on it at 4.5% and our principal residence mortgage with 12 years left at 3.875% with one 15-year mortgage at 2.75%.  We haven’t always made the best possible decisions in our lives but this one is definitely the right one.

How about Stafford to the…

How about Stafford to the Cowboys, Dak to the Texans, and Watson to the Lions as a base trade?  Throw in draft picks, players, and/or cash to balance the deal.

Makes sense.   Stafford will…

Makes sense.   Stafford will still cost less overall to obtain than Watson or Rodgers (if he becomes available).  For teams that really are Super Bowl contenders now, but for a quality quarterback, it makes sense to give up draft picks for a 4-5 year window with Stafford.  The 49ers would have won the Super Bowl last year if Stafford was QB.  The Rams may have beaten the Packers this year with Stafford.  Heck, the Saints would have beaten the Bucs with Stafford.  He’s not a Pro Bowl QB, but he may be just the right QB at the right time for more than a few teams.

Worst by far - 2008…

Worst by far - 2008 Northwestern; Best - too many to choose from for the game itself, but my best weekend experience was the 1987 Wisconsin game.  It was played at the same time as the 2nd game of a season-ending Tigers-Blue Jays series that determined the AL East representative in the ALCS (and, as I bitterly remind homer-hanky waving, indoor baseball-loving Twins fans, the best record, and therefore team, in baseball).  Michigan dominated Wisconsin, but the buzz around the stadium as updates of the Tigers game filtered through lent an underlying excitement.  As I left the stadium with my brother, how was a. UM medical student at the time, the Tigers won, which set up a one-game winner take all scenario on Sunday.  We stopped at his apartment fo a few minutes and headed straight to Tiger Stadium to get in line for bleacher seats on Sunday.  It was worth it.  Tigers 1-Blue Jays0.

When I was in junior high…

When I was in junior high our church hosted this thing for our entire denomination in Michigan called “Let it Growl”.  It was basically a lock-in in which we had no food for 24 hours.  It was intended to build empathy for world hunger.  All it initially did for me is build resentment towards my dad, who made me go even though he would certainly not miss the game.  We had a surprise bowling outing that Saturday afternoon and one of our church youth leaders let me stand in the back of the bar and watch the entire 2nd half of Michigan’s 9-3 victory as long as I promised not to break our pledge to not eat for 24 hours.  That’s how a youth leader connects with a junior high kid!

Like most, I’m off the…

Like most, I’m off the Harbaugh train and it’s due mostly to his dispassionate approach sine November 2016.  If he wants to remain and he wants to rally support from the UM base, this is his chance.  If he chooses to not defend the honor of his team and his university now, he has truly capitulated.

I make the Mgobbq bacon jam recipe every fall - best I’ve found (with minor personal-taste tweaks).

Probably not accurate, but a positive thought;  Maybe a shortened season will mitigate lack of depth concerns in the secondary and, in my opinion, still on the defensive line?  Save the snark about COVID concerns that exaggerate depth issues.  Those concerns apply to everyone.  I don’t know what to think about/hope for this season.

Logged in just to give…

Logged in just to give genuine condolences.  I lost my dad almost 15 years ago now.  More recently, I lost my mom and, very unexpectedly, my brother (who was a Dr. Anderson with close connections to UM athletics but not “that” Dr. Anderson).  There is no one-size-fits-all answer for how to cope, but watching Michigan football, basketball, and hockey always keeps them close in my memory and in my heart.  I look forward to the day when that is possible again and I’ll keep you in my thoughts tonight.  There’s no easy way to lose a loved one.

Not all Irish people fight.  I’m offended by Notre Dame and their leprechaun mascot.  If they don’t change their name I think all recruits should cancel them from their list.

Love these posts BTW (drinking Patron, club soda and lime for National Tequila Day).  If, during spring training, someone said the Tigers would be one game out of first place on July 24th, I would have been ecstatic!  So, I choose to be ecstatic tonight.

Miracle.  I just remember so…

Miracle.  I just remember so much about that night.  Mostly, I remember my mom, dad, brother, and grandparents were all together for my belated 12th birthday celebration at the house I grew up in.  I’m the only one still alive from that party.  We were all so nervous the entire third period.  I had heard a radio announcer earlier give a score of 4-3 but we didn’t know who won or even if that was a final.  When the USA went ahead 4-3, we all couldn’t believe it but still weren’t sure.  That was one of the top ten nights in my life and the memories are so vivid.  Also, Big Fish.

Yes.  I’ve had a cough and…

Yes.  I’ve had a cough and congestion for three weeks now.  It’s normal for me to get this every year or two, so it’s not alarming.  This time the big difference is a fatigue/malaise that I just can’t shake so it’s frustrating.  I’ve not had a fever and I’m generally healthy so I’m not concerned about COVID-19.  However, I’m really thinking a lot more about interacting with family.  I’ve never been one to worry or overreact to things, but I find myself thinking a lot more now and being concerned about a lingering cold.  I don’t want to worry needlessly, but I guess I’m just more cautious now.  I enjoy this blog a great deal. Stay healthy all!

I’m putting all my eggs in…

I’m putting all my eggs in the “Tiger is healthy” basket, which is a long shot.  If he is, I can still really enjoy The Masters and a few other golf tournaments even if there aren’t large galleries.  It’s really the one sport where it will be almost as fun to watch without fans.

Not complicated - if you lose by 20+ at the free throw line it’s nearly impossible to overcome -hate the “blame the refs”excuse but this game was 2016 OSU football-esque.  Michigan would have won if not for the officiating.
