Wake Coach Salty at ND Love for Transfer QB Hartman

I thought this was interesting in light of the affect the transfer portal has had on college football, as well as the fact coaches usually don't make such openly salty comments about transfers. Plus, it's funny as hell.

For those who don't know, Notre Dame's QB Sam Hartman is finishing up his first and only year at Notre Dame after transferring from Wake Forest after 5 years. Last week, during Wake's 45-7 loss to ND in South Bend, ND played a tribute video to Hartman. Wake's coach, Dave Clawson didn't find ND's sentiments genuine to say the least...

"We saw it last week [at Notre Dame]," Clawson said during his midweek press conference. "Here's a guy [Hartman] we recruited and we developed, and they are putting on a video of him, saying 'We will always love you.' I'm like, you only dated him for a couple of months. It can't be love. We are the ones who love him. We had five years with him. You rented him for a season. They bought him and rented him for a year, and now they love him. When that video played, it's just like, holy cow, this is where college football is."

Somewhere, Mike Leach is smiling.

The shit is going to hit the fan, now that the precedent has been set that all the "gentleman's agreements" about ignoring teams' gamesmanship is null and void.

Get some dirt on your opponent and package it up nicely for the lazy and incompetent NCAA.  They will hammer your opponent for you if you make it easy.

Portal tampering and NIL inducements, among others, are very target rich environments for this.

I'm sure that Ohio State's glass house is quite sturdy here . . .

I honestly don't blame him.  ND creating this loving tribute to a guy who went 9-3 is sorta weird, and Clawson probably could have used him at Wake to help him not have as bad a season.

I am fine with transfers in CFB but I do think it can lead to some weird situations like this.

Idk if it's "salt" or not, but I see no lies here.

He's absolutely correct. College football has no moral code and fans don't want it to. College football is a mirror. Stare a while.

He's not wrong. But Hartman wasn't wrong to transfer either. Notre Dame is categorically a better opportunity for him to make NIL money or have a chance at getting drafted into the NFL.

Colin Cowherd talked about this in one of his sign gate segments. THIS is the scandal in CFB that no one's talking about. The pecking order of only getting more stratified and locked in place. "Social mobility" in CFB tiers is being degraded rapidly as the haves consolidate their power at the expense of the have nots.

It's a problem for the sport at the macro level that is challenging to address because it's beneficial to the players (and richer programs) at the micro level. The only people getting screwed are the Wake Forests and Indianas of the world, and no one cares about them.

This is why I think we will eventually see a new tier in college football made up of 32 or even 16 teams that have all the resources and they will compete against each other for a separate championship. I liken it to high school sports having separate public and private school playoffs.

The current situation entirely sucks for all the lower tier teams and all the teams without big NIL money. They hit on a lower level recruit...and then he's gone for money and instant playing time. WMU has basically become Minnesota's recuit vetting system, with anyone who does well being stolen away by Fleck.

I don't enjoy it and I don't believe it's in the best academic interest of the students.

Michigan's been doing it.  Danna came from CMU, right?  Henderson and Nugent came from Stanford.  Wallace is from UMass.  Tuttle and Barner are from Indiana.  Olu was from Virginia.  Hausmann is from Nebraska.

It sucks for the schools that aren't the elite teams.  You essentially have the elite teams and then a minor league hierarchy.  The Power 5 teams that aren't elite are AAA, the Group of 5 teams are AA and then you've got the the D2/D3 that are A.

I dunno, man. I get where Clawson is coming from. It's always bugged me in college sports when a player grad transfers that the school a player was at for undergrad is just basically forgotten about. Clawson developed Hartman for 5 years and now he'll forever be remembered as a Notre Dame QB even though ND basically bought him as a rental. Russell Wilson was great at NC State, but he will always be remembered as a Badger. Jayden Daniels was great at ASU, but will always be remembered for being at LSU. It's gotta be frustrating as a smaller school when your star players transfer up and all of the sudden all the development work you did on that player is forgotten

The transfer portal sucks (mostly).  I feel bad for all these non P5 teams who are nothing but a farm system.  I feel bad for the coaches at these teams and the "bottom 40%" of P5s as well many of who are working their damn ass off and their benefit is the guys they develop walk to the highest bidder ---- as all they are doing are churning out players for the top 20%.

If the coach you committed to leaves / is fired etc you should have a free transfer with no eligibility issues.  For any other reason you should sit a year.  It's just free agency at this point.
