I don’t think the text has been made public but he has admitted it exists and has apologized.

Introduce them to some bagmen....FIRED!

Call them derogatory names to other coaches assuming the other coaches would think nothing of it....SUSPENDED.

Sad Times.

How the hell is this just coming out now?

He was On His JOB talking reckless about someone's kid who they were about to trust in his care, which is his JOB.

Imagine had this been a school teacher talking like this about a student...WHENEVER. They should/would be fired immediately.

This disgusts me to no end.

Thank you to whoever revealed him.

The cancel culture of today is fucking stupid and hypocritical ... we all did or said some shit years and years ago we wish we didn’t.

No, because racism is for the simple minded.

Saying the N word or calling white people “crackers” doesn’t make you racist.

I guarantee you have a text between family or friends, an email etc. in your past that if made public, you’d get ostracized and/or fired.  We all do.  None of us are perfect.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Nowdays everyone is casting stones at everything

Your message is all over the place and fundamentally flawed. There is no excuse for his behavior. You could look through every text message or IM or comment I have ever posted and at no point have I referred to someone as the N word. At best he can hope for forgiveness.

Nevertheless, I'm gonna help you out with one point.

Anyone who thinks they are devoid of any bias or prejudice is lying to themselves. The question is is how do you respond to that reality? Do you use that as an excuse? Everyone's racist--don't worry about it?

Or do you say, while I am human and not perfect, I will nevertheless try my best to address my shortcomings and likewise hold others to that same standard.

DrJaws, I'm not gonna bag on you for being naive, that's too simple, but if you think its OK for a person in the position of authority, in a town that has a reputation for not being very sympathetic to the african american race, to use that term you are just wrong. As someone else posted, he was just using the term accidentally. His intent was to share this message with other coaches, meaning it was something they have either joked about, or used with some sense of animosity or humiliation when referring to their black athletes. That fact that it comes out 7 years later insinuates he has probably continued to think this way. He didn't wake up racist, he was groomed and lived that way. The text just brought it to light.

I would hold off to see the entire text message (and who it was sent to) before condemning a person for saying a single word 7 years ago.  Context is everything.

He might be a racist bastard with a long history of acting like it.  He could also be a good person that maybe texted something that happened to be very non-PC.  Or maybe he was racist back then but has changed his outlook since.  I'm not going to defend or denounce him - I've never even heard of this man until this thread.  I would say hear from the people who know him, have interacted with him (including POC) to gauge what kind of person he is... not just a single text from nearly a decade ago.

My god you people are idiots. You don’t even know what racism is. Calling someone a name (any name) is not racism. Telling someone we can’t hire you or you can’t live here or you can’t do something because of your race that’s racism. You idiots are the problem

Its more helpful to think of behavior/words/actions as racist. It's very easy for people to deny "being" a racist, and it often loses the point of the argument (and if we can't even agree that using the N word makes someone racist...).

Its much easier to say what he DID was racist and hold the action accountable. Calling a Black person the N word, IS racist. There, thats easy.

The truth is, no matter how many POC friends we have/who we vote for/what we believe in our hearts, all of us white people are capable of racist behavior. Its simplest to address it when it happens internally or externally and strive to be better every day.

That is whats going on with a bunch of people on this blog right now. I am honestly in shock at how bad it is on here.  I don't even know if its worth it to stick around and see if it normalizes or just peace out of here forever. I have always heard UM has a bunch of racist fans and alumni but I have never seen it before now.

I’m at a point where I hope Brian implements some kind of new policy or program within the blog where if any key words or phrases come up in either the thread or the title of the thread itself, the thread automatically gets shut down. How that would work, I have no clue, but this stuff degrades the site experience.

I admit I’m a contributor to threads like these and I shouldn’t do it, but I miss the days where OT threads were little more than GoT predictions and complaining about the dog days of summer needing to end.
