Utah DC Suspended for Racist Text Message in 2013
I don’t think the text has been made public but he has admitted it exists and has apologized.
Snappity snap!
Holy crap.
The fact that he intended to send that text to other coaches probably meant that he knew the other coaches were fine with such language. They should be at least questioned on the culture of the program.
Introduce them to some bagmen....FIRED!
Call them derogatory names to other coaches assuming the other coaches would think nothing of it....SUSPENDED.
Sad Times.
How the hell is this just coming out now?
He was On His JOB talking reckless about someone's kid who they were about to trust in his care, which is his JOB.
Imagine had this been a school teacher talking like this about a student...WHENEVER. They should/would be fired immediately.
This disgusts me to no end.
Thank you to whoever revealed him.
Former Utah cornerback Ryan Lacy confirmed that Scalley called him the N-word playing for him. He confronted him about it in 2013 as well.
There goes all the racist sympathizer’s argument of this being a one time deal.
Damn. This isn’t just a coach at practice repeating back at a player (for the record bad judgement, lack of awareness, etc), this guy is a straight up KKK member. Fuck him. He needs to be fired like yesterday.
Yikes...
#uhohspaghettio
The cancel culture of today is fucking stupid and hypocritical ... we all did or said some shit years and years ago we wish we didn’t.
Sorry does exposing people as racist bother you.
No, because racism is for the simple minded.
Saying the N word or calling white people “crackers” doesn’t make you racist.
I guarantee you have a text between family or friends, an email etc. in your past that if made public, you’d get ostracized and/or fired. We all do. None of us are perfect.
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
Nowdays everyone is casting stones at everything
It's impressive that this is the hill you're choosing to die on.
Let's recruit this black kid to Utah and then call him the N-word when he's not paying attention. That'll truly show them that we're a family here.
Bruh...
Did you honestly just try to equate calling someone a "cracker" or a random off color text to calling someone the N word?
Yeah, you're part of the problem
Your message is all over the place and fundamentally flawed. There is no excuse for his behavior. You could look through every text message or IM or comment I have ever posted and at no point have I referred to someone as the N word. At best he can hope for forgiveness.
Nevertheless, I'm gonna help you out with one point.
Anyone who thinks they are devoid of any bias or prejudice is lying to themselves. The question is is how do you respond to that reality? Do you use that as an excuse? Everyone's racist--don't worry about it?
Or do you say, while I am human and not perfect, I will nevertheless try my best to address my shortcomings and likewise hold others to that same standard.
Racism is for the simple minded???
Unfortunately that's not true. If it were just about intelligence it would be a little easier to defeat. There are way to many intelligent and powerful people who are racists.
Up your standards. I’ll stand by the record of my written and spoken word. All of it.
I've never had a conversations with work colleagues that involved a racial slur. That you think this is normal work talk says a lot about you.
I’m pretty confident Dr Jaws would treat every man he meets as an equal.
I’m also pretty confident Cube has expressed his hatred for at least half of America.
Going with the ol’ “Everyone murders” defense?
This has to be the dumbest post I've ever seen on this site, and that's saying a LOT!
A college football coach in his early 30s in 2013 was attempting to text a coaching staff about recruiting n***ers and you think this is about cancel culture?
Well, yea, his position makes it REAL bad.
But I’ll bet there are numerous African-American kids he’s coached at Utah over the years who would have sworn on their mothers he wasn’t racist.
Now a 7 year old text comes up and suddenly he’s a KKK member?
So... because he’s racist behind their backs means he’s not racist? Is that really what you’re trying to say here? You have to be overtly racist to be racist now?
He is done recruiting.
"Everybody kills people, murders people, steals from you, drops the n word at work." - drjaws
Correct
DrJaws, I'm not gonna bag on you for being naive, that's too simple, but if you think its OK for a person in the position of authority, in a town that has a reputation for not being very sympathetic to the african american race, to use that term you are just wrong. As someone else posted, he was just using the term accidentally. His intent was to share this message with other coaches, meaning it was something they have either joked about, or used with some sense of animosity or humiliation when referring to their black athletes. That fact that it comes out 7 years later insinuates he has probably continued to think this way. He didn't wake up racist, he was groomed and lived that way. The text just brought it to light.
I disagree but in particular in this instance. Dude works with young black men and talks about them this way. And this is just the time he accidently sent it to the wrong person.
Just to add on, people saying the "n-word" should not be working with white kids either
You were calling young black kids you were trying to recruit racial slurs? You probably deserve to have some consequences thrown your way as well. Maybe if there are some social consequences people will realize that it's never ok.
Edit: Double post so I guess I’ll ask again. You really think this is about cancel culture?
A single text from 7 years ago doesn’t make someone racist.
If that’s literally the only negative thing they can bring up then yea. Its cancel culture.
if he has a track record of saying/texting this, my question would be “why did it take so long to fire the POS”
A single text from 7 years ago in which he uses the n word does indeed, I’m afraid, make you a racist
I would hold off to see the entire text message (and who it was sent to) before condemning a person for saying a single word 7 years ago. Context is everything.
He might be a racist bastard with a long history of acting like it. He could also be a good person that maybe texted something that happened to be very non-PC. Or maybe he was racist back then but has changed his outlook since. I'm not going to defend or denounce him - I've never even heard of this man until this thread. I would say hear from the people who know him, have interacted with him (including POC) to gauge what kind of person he is... not just a single text from nearly a decade ago.
My god you people are idiots. You don’t even know what racism is. Calling someone a name (any name) is not racism. Telling someone we can’t hire you or you can’t live here or you can’t do something because of your race that’s racism. You idiots are the problem
Using a racial slur is racist. Calling you an idiot is not racist.
Just checked with logic and racist epithets are reflective of racism. Mind blowing for those under the age of 10.
Haha... OK, you keep believing that.
It’s a single text that was meant for the coaching staff and he sent it to a recruit. You really think he’s just going to drop that word once with coaches and then move on? Just dipped his toe in?
Do you honestly think it is likely this guy just used this slur once and it just happened to be the time he sent it to the wrong person? Come on.
Its more helpful to think of behavior/words/actions as racist. It's very easy for people to deny "being" a racist, and it often loses the point of the argument (and if we can't even agree that using the N word makes someone racist...).
Its much easier to say what he DID was racist and hold the action accountable. Calling a Black person the N word, IS racist. There, thats easy.
The truth is, no matter how many POC friends we have/who we vote for/what we believe in our hearts, all of us white people are capable of racist behavior. Its simplest to address it when it happens internally or externally and strive to be better every day.
Yes. Going down the "is he a racist person?" rabbit hole is pointless. What he did was racist. That's all that matters.
Doc, come on, man.
I would hope all of us have never used the N word.
But maybe I'm naive?
Calling someone a name that may cause them pain is wrong. Doesn’t make you a racist, just a dick. Using a word that wasn’t meant for that person to ever hear isn’t anything at all. Just a unfortunate mistake.
I feel like you are just trying to move the goalposts on what is racist so you can feel better about being a racist.
That is whats going on with a bunch of people on this blog right now. I am honestly in shock at how bad it is on here. I don't even know if its worth it to stick around and see if it normalizes or just peace out of here forever. I have always heard UM has a bunch of racist fans and alumni but I have never seen it before now.
I had the same reaction. Super sad and down about it. Of course, a few bad apples (who double down on their dipshit posts and ideas) do stand out and make it seem like the place is full of racists. If I were Brian, I would get on top of this shit real soon now, otherwise his business is going to tank.
I’m at a point where I hope Brian implements some kind of new policy or program within the blog where if any key words or phrases come up in either the thread or the title of the thread itself, the thread automatically gets shut down. How that would work, I have no clue, but this stuff degrades the site experience.
I admit I’m a contributor to threads like these and I shouldn’t do it, but I miss the days where OT threads were little more than GoT predictions and complaining about the dog days of summer needing to end.
If you utter that word just to yourself its wrong. And not just an unfortunate mistake.
