The guy can coach linemen. Look at his record at USD, Stanford, SF, and USC (and with Braden this year). And as for play calling, remember that it's been a group effort.

Just like I said last night on the diary giving Harbaugh a "B+" grade for his work at UM thus far, people who aren't happy to see more of Drevno at UM are simply people who cannot be reasoned with.  We had exactly one elite player on O this year, Jake Butt.  Everyone else was somewhere between good & serviceable.  Despite that, we were #1 in the conference and #11 in the nation in scoring offense.  If you're not happy to see 5 more years of a key member of the coaching team that made that happen, I can't help you.

I think this is a great move because JJH says so, because of Drevno's track record, and because he has made chicken salad, if not prime rib, out of chicken scat in the first two years here.

For those panning this decision, come out and state your preferred candidate or alternate course of action.

I get the feeling I've got more negs coming my way, but I'm not sure how I feel about this. Against the good teams there was a lot of "Peppers up the middle for... 1 yard. Peppers to the left for... 1 yard. Peppers to the right for... 1 yard."  "Peppers can throw the ball, we've seen it in practice!" And then followed quickly by "Peppers up the middle for... 1 yard." And now we possibly don't have Peppers. If McDoom was in the game the entire world and their grandmother knew after 4 games that it was going to be a jet sweep. Scoring in the first half and then the tank started to run on empty in the 2nd half seemed to be the theme in the big games. Lack of trick plays (unless you count the fake field goal in the Rutgers game when we were already up by 50.) I know, I know. Mr. Negativity.

There is some truth to this. And I was just as frustrated with the staff's use of Peppers on offense as everyone else the last few games in particular, but all we have heard from opposing coaches is how difficult it is to prepare for Harbaugh's offensive schemes. I don't know what exactly happened at the tail end of the season, but I have a hard time believing Harbaugh and Drevno lost their grasp of a complex offensive system.

people will really look back at this 2016 team and realize it had lots of limitations that the offensive staff had to work around.  Starting with a rickety oline, an avg QB, WR's that could not run past the defense and if they did a QB who couldn't hit them often enough, a group of RB's that just weren't game breakers and need good blocking to get yards which they rarely got.

I think Michigan's offensive staff worked wonders with what they had available, they've made at least 3 or 4 guys viable NFL players who without their coaching probably would not make that level.

I thought he mixed up the playing calling very well throughout the season. Once we get more athletes on offense ( Najee, DPJ ) watch how quickly people will love drevno. It's not X's and O's it's the jimmies at the joes that win games.

I like this move. I think Drevno is good at what he does and will be better when he has a better QB running his offense. This also shuts people up about harbaugh leaving anytime soon.

That loser and his loser OCs should have been fired by 1975, when his record against OSU was 2-4-1 with two pathetic Rose Bowl losses, so five of his first seasons were outright failures. Obviously couldn't win the big one-all sizzle and no steak.

Cause I think he has done an amazing job with what he had. Turning Braden into a legit guard, and a passable LT is pretty impressive seeing how far he came. For the first 75% of the season Kalis was actually good! Getting Newsome and Bredeson up and running so early is a good thing.

I know we didn't have a great OL. But you cannot say it wasn't the best it could be with who we had. That's coaching.

he just needs to keep locking down dudes that are TRUE 6'6" / 330lbs and athletic. Coach Drevino will teach them technique and scheme plus a college strength program on a huge frame. Our issue this year on OL is our guys were under-sized against the teams with elite NTs / DTs / SDEs. Need more true big guys in Drevino's fold and the OL will become elite. We need guys like Chuck Filiaga.

I remember reading that Drevno didn't do that much of the recruiting.  How does he connect with recruits and parents?

Our OL whiffs these past 2 cycles stand out more than other positions.  We did pull in Bredeson and Ruiz (and Owenu, but he was in-state).  It seems that as signing day approaches, we add more high 3*s fallbacks, than elite prospects.

Your opinions?

2016 recruiting, especially along the OL, cannot be attributed to Drevno. Recruiting isn't a 1 year thing. Takes time to develop relationships, etc.

Chuck Filiaga is being recruited by Drevno alone.

Isaiah Wilson was primarily recruited by Wheatley, who has been in NY for a long time before returning to Michigan. He also had a strong desire to play in the SEC.

Aaron Banks seemed like a program decision to not pursue.

Alex Leatherwood has been an Alabama commit for 7 months. Just getting him to think about flipping speaks volumes of Drevno.

The best remaining guys on the board are from Washington (made the playoff this year), a guy from AZ (Austin Jackson) that "kind of-likely" will come up for an OV in January, a OG who wants to play DT and is being offered that spot at another school (Slaton), and a near lock in Filiaga.

[edit]: He also ranks 9th in the country among coordinators (offensive and defensive) in recruiting rankings. Ahead of Don Brown. Coordinators are usually busy with other things, so I'd think they don't recruit as much as a position coach would.
