Thank You Chaundee

My favorite player during the entire tournament. Consistently hit a shot when we needed it in every game. I wish he had got a chance with one of those last shots. I hope he comes back, but nonetheless, I am happy we had him for the season.

Over the years, I've learned that even high-end talent takes a while to acclimate to the college game and develop. And even if they develop steadily in year 1, they tend to hit a wall (commonly referred to as the "freshman wall") late in the season when teams have more data and more detailed scouting reports on tendencies and weaknesses.

Regardless of ranking, players like Hunter Dickinson (high 4 star) and Trey Burke (3 star) are rare because they showed star ability from day 1. Most do not. It takes at least a full season and sometimes 2 to truly play at a high level. (Just look at Mo Wagner, Teske, Simpson, MAAR, Davis, DJ Wilson, etc.)

Take it from me...

Even putting the 5 stars aside, I have VERY high hopes for Kobe Bufkin, Isaiah Barnes, and (to a lesser extent) Frankie Collins. IMO, Bufkin and Barnes have a strong chance to be future NBA players. But I don't expect them to be all-conference level until their sophomore seasons. Having Eli Brooks, Chaundee Brown, and Austin Davis there will make the transition from freshman to sophomore season much easier while keeping Michigan at a level to contend for a national championship. Continuity matters. And playing behind experienced vets who can teach them the tricks of the trade will do wonders for them. Going against them everyday in practice will sharpen them.

Some context: I'm very bullish on the 2021 class just as I was on the 2012 class because I had seen Nik/GR3/McGary play at various stages pre-Michigan. Ex: Before he stepped on campus, I predicted that Stauskas would be a 2,000 point scorer if he stayed at Michigan for 4 years. I had seen Stauskas play in HS and knew he was special. But Nik developed at a pace exceeding even my high hopes. He finished with 1,060 points in 2 years. I say that not to toot my own horn but to establish some credibility. I'm proud of my track record w/r/t scouting and evaluating. I'm reasonably confident that in 5 years we'll look back and marvel at the incoming 2021 class just as we fondly remember the 2012 class. I just hope it translates into a National Championship or 2. We Michigan fans have waited so damn long for that elusive 2nd National Championship.

He should have touched the ball way more, he was the only one who could do anything outside the paint tonight. I have no idea why Juwan didn't lean on him more.

I love coach Howard but I feel that we sometimes got into throw it to Hunter mode a bit too much.

As a former NBA coach I would have loved to have seen him draw up some plays to spring Chaundee, recognizing the hot hand like the pros do. Especially while so many of our guys were struggling tonight.

I agree.

We over-relied on post play to score points.

But Hunter was also determined to carry us. He had the opportunity to pass out of the post on a number of occasions and decided not to. (I remember one instance vividly late in the 2nd half where Johns was calling for the ball at the top of the key.) Perhaps that was Hunter sensing that the team was cold and he felt he had to impose himself for the good of the team.

Interestingly, our guys turned down some looks from 3 that they would normally take. Eli in particular had one instance where he would've let it fly but perhaps he knew that his shot wasn't there (like it was against LSU).

All in all, I'm very disappointed but I'm sure our guys are waaaaay more disappointed. If they can stomach watching the game, they'll be disgusted at the number of looks they missed at point blank or near the post. And oh yeah...the FTs. The damn FTs.

IIRC, we were the best 3 point shooting team and FT shooting team in the Big Ten. But both failed in the same game. Just awful.

Dude was my favorite player. Always came in with an instant impact. Didn’t agree with him being taking out at the 4 min mark after hitting and 3 and grabbing loose all rebound.

Yeah, he was under-utilized today. Could have saved us from the ill-advised hero ball.

Please come back, C-man. You are wanted, you are needed. But even if you leave, you will be a true wolverine for life.

Logged in just to say, God Damnit I loved watching Chaundee Brown suit up for Michigan this season. Holding out faint hope he’s back next season. But if not, thanks for everything Chaundee.

Imagine being a 3 year starter in the ACC, 1000 point scorer, coming here and accepting his role and loving it as much as he does. A Michigan man no doubt!

Check out this hustle in a 20 point game... sheer magnificence, a true baller

Whether he was having the rare off night, or was red hot, you knew what you were getting when Chaundee came off the bench - a high energy player that was going to leave all of his effort on the floor.

That effort was benched by the coaches last night, in place of a seeming lack of effort from some of the starters.  My take is that the first half featured playground basketball, and the second half featured fearful basketball, playing not to lose.  The entire second half looked like 4 guys standing around until they found an entry pass to Dickenson.  And then they stood around waiting for whatever he was going to do.  Brown didn't play that game - he worked his way into a couple of good shots and a rebound.

What?  Can't have that tonight - bench him!

I hope he comes back, but I believe he'll find a semi-permanent home in the NBA.

Michigan had a terrible execution game but I don't think you can criticize the efforts of any player.  Effort was there on D, on offense and on rebounding.  We just didn't play or shoot well offensively and guys were taking shots (or not taking shots) they don't usually (and maybe UCLA gets some credit for that).  The flow was off but the effort was there.

total joy to watch.... love his energy, passion.... and the big smile on his face after he drains a three.  His feet are squared up and set, when he takes the pass, he's ready to fire!

That had to be a very frustrating game for him.  Many possessions he was alone in the corner waving for the ball only to watch it reversed to the other side or a bad shot go up.  But, he seems like a helluva team player who didn't put about it.

Good luck to the young man whatever his future plans may be.

I was stunned when juwan subbed out brown for Wagner right after he made that 3 late, after Wagner had proven he was a liability all night long on defense and offense.
