Talking Cars Tuesday Says Its Time For You to Pick a New Car

Submitted by XM - Mt 1822 on April 23rd, 2024 at 7:51 AM

Mates,

With apologies for being a bossy boiler (Thomas the Tank Engine reference), you have been given sufficient budget to be used solely to purchase a new car or truck.  Any vehicle you want.  Today.  And it will be delivered today, kind of like you strolled onto the car lot and 'bingo', there is that exact vehicle you want and they hand you the keys on the spot.

Simple questions today:  What car or truck do you choose?   Why that particular vehicle?

Have a great day,

XM

p.s. Bat light for Jeepin' Ben, you do this best of all of us.

KOENIGSEGG CC850 - silver grey, 6 speed manual and 9 speed automatic in the same transmission.  Drop dead gorgeous and super fast.  And if it’s too much for me to drive, I can trade it for a yacht.

Not sure what’s next because my preferred ride for the last 15 or so years, a Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel, is no longer available.  Love it for the road trips from MI to CO.  But the last time I did the ultimate old guy purchase: in 2022 I traded my white 2016 with 120k for the lowest mileage 2018 (last year) in the country.  Same colors, everything.  Total dad move.

I'd probably just replace my 2011 Silverado with a 2024 and then drive that for the next 10+ years. I don't do any crazy towing but carry a lot of bikes and spend a chunk of time each year in Montana so having a basic truck with 4WD is useful when I'm further out on some of the more remote forest service roads there.

I'm thinking about upgrading my venerable (250K miles) 4Runner with the new iteration of either the Lexus GX550 or the Land Cruiser.  But if I'm honest, the car I really want back is my 1980 911 Targa (sold for a down payment).   Ironically, they would be about the same price today.

Mine is a 2006 with the V6--same generation as yours.  It has been and still is completely reliable, and I don't really "need" a new vehicle.  I added a new head unit for Android Auto, backup camera, and Sirius XM which was enough tech upgrade to make it tolerable to drive today.

Practical Car: Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Premium. We need to purchase our next family car so we have a replacment vehicle for our 8 year old family vehicle in case it starts to have issues (hopefully both last for a long time)

Dream car: Porsche Targa 4s. One of the few sports cars that still come with a manual.  All wheel drive means I can drive it for most of the year. I've always loved Porsche's and 911s.  Can still kind of bring kids with me and can take wife on weekend trips around Michigan

Cool Practical Car: Would love a Rivian RS1.  I am a huge fan.  Just a cool vehicle that can do everything. Only concern is the mileage for the speed I drive up to traverse city for so many youth sports events, where I'd need to make at least one long stop (1/2 hour). Probably worth it to deal with that one inconvenience 7-8 times a year.

Got the LA Silver exterior and black interior. Had it for a couple of days now and absolutely love it except when I have to pull it into the garage. So much fun. It's great that they keep improving them after you have it. Replaces a 2012 Tacoma which is a great truck but still the same as it was in 2012.

Dear XM Claus,

I would like a '24 Bronco Heritage Edition in shadow black because I like Fords and I think it looks fantastic. That's probably the worst reasoning ever provided on a gearhead thread, but I'm a simple man. The world is a better place if old English majors don't change their own oil.

Liking a car because you like it, for any reason, is the ultimate reasoning to like a car on a gearhead thread.  Gearheads like all sorts of cars for all sorts of reasons.  Most of them are not practical or logical. It's the best part of cars.  "That is a brilliant car, but I like this." Jeremy Clarkson.

Since I already own a 6th gen Camaro 2SS, I’ll go with an SUV: Escalade V. Luxury SUV with lots of space with the same 6.2L v8 supercharged engine from the C7 corvette z06, Camaro ZL1, and CT5 V black wing putting out 682 HP. One of the best stock exhausts I’ve ever heard.

which comment just caused me to check.  it is our friend.....wrestling coach.

i assume he has body parts like tony tiny-bootie, our B10 president.   either that, or he is having a really, really bad day and i'd want to be empathetic about that.  i doubt it, but i'll hold out the possibility

look sport, i didn't bring it up, others did.   read their comments calling you a 'butthurt candyass'.  are they projecting also or just noticing really strange behavior.  trying to be serious, you are having a virtual aneurism of unprovoked hate and bizarre behavior.  you will note that i haven't neg'd you.   i can only imagine what is going tragically wrong in your life and i'm trying my imperfect best to not pile on.  the bitterness and disappointment that would drive you to do what you did today for absolutely no reason, i can't fathom it.   i remember you did this once last year but were able to gain self-control.  try that again.  i feel sorry for you.  get help.  whatever is eating at you is not healthy.  try friendships, family, faith, whatever, but get some help.  if it's any help, go ahead and neg all my posts if that makes your situation better.

AAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA im literally laughing out loud at work right now, you're for real bro?!?!?! Over some clicks of the mouse? Brooooooo I think it's you that might have the problem, honestly I thought you're car thread belongs on reddit, not a sports blog, and I just wanted to see how you would respond to losing some imaginary status symbols on here, as expected thanks for not disappointing!!! Classic response bro, I mean really, thank you, this made my day, I'm still laughing at how seriously you take things, too funny. This is true gold, buddy! You could not have me more misunderstood my friend...would love to have a beer, I'm a very jovial guy with a very happy life, thankfully. Healthy, beautiful family, loving wife, children who are confident and happy and successful, secure employment, plenty of strong connections with friends, I get to work with kids and help them everyday which I love, and I get to live out both of my passions on a daily basis which are helping others in need and coaching wrestling/football, all good here buddy, you don't have to worry about me anymore!!! May you have a blessed day!

you are a liar and a coward.

others called you out, not me.  i basically asked if you were okay.  i didn't neg you, others did.  i didn't call you 'so wounded' , 'candyass' or 'an idiot', others did.

you shouldn't be working with children, you have deep issues.  you need to be working with a therapist.

you've never had the guts to reveal any of your prior banned user names.  you've been around here long enough to know 'talking cars' is a regular OT thread.  indeed, close to 200 posts in response.  seems to have been well-received.

and if any bit of you manufacturing a 'happy life' is true, please realize that makes what you did yesterday and today that much more bizarre.

get help.  stay away from children.

I have a built Lexus 100 series Land Cruiser and my GF has a 992 Porsche 911 C2S

Wouldn’t change a thing - someone gets another car on my budget :)

I only buy used (preferably gently).   But if it could be anything, a 1971 MG MGB Roadster, classic factory blue.  While they're not practical, nor reliable, there is high sentimental value for me.

Either a C8 ZR1 (when it finally goes into production). Or. A Lucid Sapphire, because 1,234 HP seems about right for a big, comfy EV sedan with 500 miles of range.

BMW i5 e40, which I just recently leased.

Incredibly fun to drive, but still has that 5 Series elegance and luxury. Fit and finish much better than the Tesla S. Best of all BMW has some nice incentives, my lease payment is all of $25/mo more than the 540i it replaced.

If I had the discretionary funds I would have opted for the i5 M60, but maybe I don't really need to go 0-60 in 3.2 seconds.

One of the best things about the i5 torque and the quiet cabin/engine is that you accelerate very quickly, but to my wife in the passenger seat it doesn't sound/feel like I am "racing."  Of which she is always accusing me, because of my native NYer roots. Even though I did (kinda sorta) mature out of it.

There are two drive modes, regular "D" where you use the brake like an ICE car, or variations of Adaptive Braking which uses mainly the one pedal (unless you need to stop quickly) and is designated "B". I was instructing my wife how to drive the i5 with one pedal, and she said "it's just like a Bumper Car! "B" is for "Bumper Car!" Which didn't exactly inspire me with confidence, but then again she did get the hang of it pretty quickly...

1992 Mustang GT V5.0. Wild strawberry w black rag and silver ground effects. I so miss that car. Could blow (reasonably) anything off the road at a red light 0-50 mph

(For reference… an identical copy of my car was the car used by Michael Douglas’s chracter in Basic Instinct.)

Toyota Sienna.   I don't even have kids but the idea of all that cargo capacity, plus 36 mpg, is hard to pass up.   Much more practical than a truck for my needs.

Practical me: a VW Taos. I like how Volkswagens drive and I need more space than a GTI would provide.

Fun me that doesn't care about practicality: a GTI.

We have an electric Mini which, aside from the media interface, is great. Perfect city car for us.
