Tale of the Tape II: Compare OSU & UM Stats vs Wiscy

Submitted by superstringer on

I did this for the Rutgers games, and some people commented that it's pointless to compare stats from a blowout against a very overmatched team.  Or that the "transitive property" doesn't apply to college football states.  Whatever.  Take em for what you want -- our D still shut down Rutgers way better than OSU did.

Undeterred, let's do it again.  I know, OSU had a tougher fight -- Wiscy was at home, at night, had extra week to prepare, and "Hornibrook wasn't injured by a vicious hit the first time he threw."  Agaoin, whatever.  What do these stats tell me?  OSU's offense is probably a bit better than ours, but we still managed to put ourselves in position to score exactly the same number of regulation points as OSU, had our FG kickers been average-competent (23 pts each).  OTOH, OUR DEFENSE IS WAY BETTER THAN THEIRS.  We've now seen that in 2 games in 3 weeks.  Sweet Christmas.

Note:  The OSU data appears to include OT, and ESPN doesn't have per-period stats, so I couldn't back it out.  I guess in regulation they'd have 25 yds less offense and 21 on defense, etc. OT doesn't seem to have affected TOP (nor should it).  I excluded OT scoring from the TD data.

If you think Brown will cede UM's most explosive defensive player to such a simple role, I think you're mistaken. He will fling Peppers all over the field. Also, generally spying is not a great long term strategy. Can be used in certain spots, but it's a win for the offense. It neutralizes one defender for most of the snaps. Key would be rush and blitz effectively and in their lanes so he can't break the pocket or get to the edge.

I think defenders should come at Barrett harder when there is any chance he still has the ball. There were at least a half dozen times in the game last night a Wisconsin LB got kind of stuck in no mans land trying to decide to either chase or bail, when it would have been more effective to come for him with bad intent and rely on the rest of the D to clean up anyone else.

to owning the line of scrimmage.  If the Michigan D-Line can control the OSU O-line (and I believe they will dominate) AND if the Michigan O-line can control the LOS ( I think it will be a stalemate or ever so slight Michigan advantage) then the good guys will win.   Let's just stay healthy ..............

The Michigan O-line is going to struggle with OSU's blitzes.  Speight was 1-11 against Wisconsin on 3rd downs.  Wisconsin blitzed him heavily.

The game will be decided on how well Speight, the O-line, and the play calling respond to pressure.

I enjoy reading these statistical comparisons... yet I acknowledge that there are to many variables to make them scientific. i would say they provide a good barometer....

These stats pretty much pass the eye-ball test. JT Barrett adds a run threat our offense lacks and we have more big time players on all three levels of the defense. The Game will be epic this year. Bo vs. Woody level anticipation. Sure wish we could turn down the TVs and listen to Ufer like in the old days.

on all three levels of the defense?" Really? Do they bend light? Have a bigger name at LB (The Chef), Michigan's CB's are better, and I certainly don't see how you can be suggesting you have more "big time players" on the DL.

Had to chuckle at your last comment. That is exactly what I used to do when I was in high school. I loved to listen to Ufer's call of the game. He was truly a great man and I have missed his play calling many times over the years.

look to make Michigan's D pay for being aggresive- so being aggresive and maintaining assignments and position will be crucial.

Broken plays where Barrett is running for yards sounds worse than him having to throw the ball.
