Sure glad we didn't play Purdue

they might have scored 100. Can anyone explain how Purdue dominated the OSU game?

Good thing we didn't play Nebraska or Maryland either right? I mean if OSU had nailbiters against them, those teams would have crushed us...

This may sound crazy, but if OSU played Purdue again, I think they could actually win.

A few things.  One is they can sneak up on OSU.  Maryland played them the week before The Game.  We always play them the last game of the season.  This leaves no room for a let down or to catch them before another big game.  It ensures we get their best performance every year.  Two, they have some fast shifty players they got the ball to in space and we don't really play that style of offense.  We have guys like that.  Hypothetically if you wanted to trot out Evans at RB, Bell in the slot, Thomas and DPJ at WR that's a lot of speed guys.  But, we don't do that.  We're playing a style that requires our o-line and TEs to produce and they did not.

That being said IMHO that was not our problem and that is not where our team is going.  Our problem was the two lines.  We have been saying this about the o-line forever.  Warriner is helping greatly, but we're not there yet.  Ruiz, Bredeson, and Onwenu are all high level recruits.  The tackle position will still take some time.  Jones is coming in, we have a shot at Keegan, and Mayfield has already shown potential as a true freshman.  Things are moving in the right direction, but if anyone thought our o-line was going to match up against OSU's d-line I'd call you crazy.  Be happy they didn't have Bosa.

The other side of that is our lack of a pass rush.  We had the #1 overall recruit in his junior and a senior in Winovich who has had a phenomenal season and neither could put together any pressure on Haskins.  They got completely stone walled all game.  Granted, both had questionable health.  Also, Solomon was not healthy who was supposed our replacement for Hurst.  Right now Kemp and Dwumfor are just guys.  Moving forward we have Mazi Smith and Chris Hinton coming in.  We also have a shot at Zach Harrison and Karlaftis.  Paye and Hutchinson are both young and have shown potential and Villain is another high level recruit who hasn't been healthy yet.  There are pieces in place.

I think we are addressing the things we need to and things are moving in the right direction, but this continues to be a process we thought would take less time and this was a disspointing game.  But I wouldn't put too much stock into one game.  Our same defense has performed better against OSU in the past with Brown.  We just ran into a great QB and we needed to pressure him and couldn't.  OSU will always have great players and ours need to match theirs.  You would have expected Gary could match any guy they throw out, but that wasn't the case.  Their o-line played it's best game and our d-line was beat up.  It is what it is.

One game in isolation. We would have beat Purdue like Eastern Michigan did. If Ambry Thomas returns the opening kickoff and Hill gets a pick six, Meyer and his team would have crumbled. They do well as front runners. When they are down, the head-grabbing antics start. I am so bummed we did not initiate any of that activity with our disappointing performance.

We would have killed Purdue.

I hope Don Brown wakes up every morning for the next 364 days remembering that game yesterday.

.... and also hope we have a new OC with a fresh offensive scheme going into the 2019 season.

Michigan would pound the eff out of Purdue. While there are trends, all games are played in isolation. Big upsets like that happen, and there is never a logical explanation. There’s a reason why nobody predicted Purdue would blow out OSU and nobody predicted OSU would hang 60 on Michigan, but that stuff happens.

Purdue ran a lot of mis direction and got the ball to their playmakers in space. That opened up the run game for them. We just continued to run into a brick wall and watch the game slip out of reach.

It took Purdue a number of games to get Moore (WR) setup in the college game.  They peaked in the game against OSU.  Then Moore  become a known commodity and defenses knew better how to manage him.  Purdue got OSU at just the right time.  Michigan did not.

Purdue and Maryland played OSU like they had nothing to lose. Harbaugh (offensively at least) played as though Michigan had everything to lose. The wet conditions might have added to the idea that a conservative, ball control approach was the way to go. That turned out to be a mistake.

This year we counted on Ohio State's defense reverting to bad form, making mistakes allowing big plays. Instead, Ohio State adjusted slightly, played more sound defense, and gained confidence.

Maybe OSU had begun their Michigan practice run, relying on better athletes to win.  Would explain Minny, Sparty, Nebraska and Maryland as well.  OSU spent 5 weeks prepping for Michigan, trusting on overwhelming talent to win the rest.
