Speight Returning?

Per Harbaugh:

"Got good news in recent cat scan.  Doctors surprised he's so far along."

Wilton seems like a great candidate to grad transfer a la Shane Morris in the offseason, but I(much like many of you I'd presume) can't shake the feeling that Jim believes he gives us the best chance to win.  If I was forced to bet on this, I'd say Wilton is starting against ND on September 1st rather than for Central/someone similar.

He also threw 3 TDs that game, then followed it up with 4 more.  He also led the team to a comeback win against Minnesota the year before, on the road, after filling in for an injured Rudock.

But yes, that pick against Hawaii was the beginning of the end for someone who...has thrown 22 TDs vs. 10 INTs in his career.

I get that people like the fixate on the new, shiny object in front of them, but in two weeks Peters has proven to be reasonably better than John O'Korn.  I'm not comfortable saying anything else, and if Speight leaves after this year Michigan will be looking down the barrel of a season in which about the same mediocre offensive line will be tasked with not getting a RS So. killed because literally there isn't a viable candidate besides some various flavors of freshmen and Malzone.

I realize he has not been tasked with operating a ton or even most of the playbook, but his first 17 throws since coming in have been close to dominant. 13/17 for 159 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT. That's 76% completion and 9.5 ypa. Of those 4 misses only one was a bad (late) decision. I realize that the throws after his first drive against Minnesota have worse numbers, but there are various factors there. I'm not saying that Peters has set the world on fire, but I think that we can at least say that he has been "good" when the offense has been serious about throwing the ball.

That's all true, but I'd point out that John O'Korn's first 27 throws this year were 19/27 for 300 yards, 11.1 ypa, a TD and a pick.  We are living in a world of very small sample sizes with players, and while I hope Peters bucks the trend and plays well going forward, he was 3rd string for a reason and I'm going to need to see a bit more from him against good defense before I am comfortable getting too attached to him being a starter if the offense isn't rushing for over 300 yards a game.

Yes, but even as that was going on, I saw John make multiple plays that made me say "oh that's why he isn't the starter" and "Oh that would be intercepted against a decent defense"...and then next week he threw three interceptions against a decent defense. Peters has played two defenses both ranked much higher than Purdue in S&P. He's had (imo) exactly one very bad throw, and it wasn't necessarily a bad decision or bad throw, it was just late. He's looked better than JOK against two defenses that are better than Purdue. Not annointing him, but I think his start has been noticeably better.

I’m not sure if I’d say he’s been “good.” I’d describe it as “promising.” He’s looked OK for a redshirt freshman making his first starts against pretty bad defenses, with pretty bad protection, but a pretty good running game. And he’s thrown some nice short stuff. That’s promising. I’m encouraged for the future, but I don’t think you can call it good when one of the two games includes a 50 yard day.

You could put literally anyone under center at the beginning of the season and they would have failed. The O-Line was terrible, and is still very "iffy" on pass pro. People seem to forget that Speight had a really good year last year as a first time starter. Hell, we were ranked #2 and a lot of that was because of him!

The run game was no where near where it is now to start the season. If Speight does not get hurt, I think we beat MSU and at least put up a fight against Penn State. I'm a Speight fan. I think the kid is smart, and leads the offense. I was at the Maryland slaughter last year with my Irish fan buddy, and he could not stop talking about Wilton and how he wished ND had a passer like him. But, whatever, he threw two pick sixes this year, so last year doesn't matter.

It's a fair question at this point. Peters hasn't been asked to do too much. He's done well with what he's been tasked with so far, and that's definitely encouraging. Hasn't made too many mistakes. But he hasn't been in a big game yet. He hasn't been forced to command the huddle in a raucous environment with his team's season on the line. He hasn't had to stare down his team's biggest rivals and be asked to deliver what so few Michigan QBs have been able to deliver recently: a victory.

The last three games of the season, Wisconsin, OSU, and bowl game, will tell us a lot about whether we can expect to see Peters next September, or if it may be Speight. If he delivers in those games, plays well, maybe even helps orchestrate a victory over OSU, Speight may not end up playing another down here. If Peters stinks it up, that opens the door for Speight to get his job back next Fall.

It would be interesting to see what Speight can do when he has a functional running game. He's never had that before and looked really good at times last year. Not that I think he should play over Peters, but Speight was pretty good for much of last year.

I like a healthy Wilton Speight with a hopfully better O-Line and a really good backfiled vs Notre Dame. At least Peters will have the experience incase anything happens (transfer). I'm just glad to hear the kid is getting better!

I just hope he is back and healthy for 2018.  I don't see him grad transferring, and he takes a lot of heat for this year's performance up to the injury.  Although I beleive he cost michigan the ohio game last year "not the refs".  I still believe up until I see something different from Peters when healthy he is the best Qb.  He came into the year with a whole new young wide recievers and for the most part new o-line.  The two picks against Florida, 1-it touched the recievers hands 2-was really bad, but we have not thrown the ball at all with peters in, and will need to against Wisconsin and Ohio.  I also hope they learned their lesson in the Penn st. game when playing Ohio.  We will not be able to just play man against that team they will need to run zone and keep things in front of them or the quarterback/offense being able to throw won't matter.

I wasn't challenging you; I don't know if he'll beat out Speight. But before Speight got injured, I felt like he was losing confidence. He could barely complete a pass. He may be more of a commanding leader, but he seemed like he hit a wall. And I'm assuming Peters will develop.

...than Peters. If he can start either of the last two you do it.

We all know it's much easier for young QBs to come off the bench if needed than handle the pressure of being the starter plus Speight starting makes it a bigger challenge for the DC to prepare for them.

Glad to hear positive progress with Wilton. Hope he is ready to go soon as he is another viable option at QB.

While I am sure that Harbaugh is not spreading any misinformation,I wonder if he is putting that out publicly in an attempt to get Durkin (and Wisconsin and OSU later) to prepare (at least a little) for 2 QB scenarios. I'm sure Durkin would like to do whatever he can to make Peters beat them and not give up 300+ yards rushing. If he thinks there is any chance Speight will play they will have to spend at least some practice time and install a strategy for a full up Michigan passing attack.

It seems like people have a personal stake in Peters starting. It’s OK, guys. He will get his chance to start at some point, and we hope he’s great. But if Speight comes back and beats him out, that’s good for Michigan. If Speight comes back and Peters wins the job, that’s good for Michigan. People that are arguing against Speight’s return seem to be really concerned that Peters might temporarily lose the job. Well, if he loses it, that means the other guy deserved it. What if McCafferey beats them all out next year? That’s good for Michigan. We’re at a point where people seem to be more a fan of an individual player than Michigan. Weird.

hope he does what is best for him. As others note, I have EVERY  confidence coaches will play the qb who demonstrates in practice he is most ready to help us win.

As an aside FWIW, up to now, happen to think Wilt always sounds like he is a great teammate, and represents the program well.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if for Wisconsin and Ohio State, Harbaugh has three packages- or specific plays- for Peters, O'Korn, and Speight (if he is recovered). I can't believe that Peters has command of the entire offense.
Also good to keep Wisconsin and Ohio State DCs guessing and not let them tee off on Peters.

Unless Peters gets in serious trouble against Maryland though, I would expect him to get nearly all the meaningful snaps against Maryland, except for maybe a series or two.

No way in hell Speight sees the field during the remainder of the 2017 season. If he's fit and ready to compete in spring 2008, let the competition begin. With McCaffrey in the mix then as well, the fight for the job should be interesting.

Need to shore up the pass pro before Speight's return.  I don't want tender vertebrae vs blitz pickups.

In all seriousness, I am hoping like heck that Speight comes back during this regular season.  With all due respect to Peters, I think Speight even with all of the warts we've seen early in the season, gives us the best chance to win out, especially with a surging running game.

I agree with about Wilton healing and getting a chance to compete for the starting QB job. But I don’t think he’s as talented or better than Peters. I’m sorry Wilton is average college QB. Give the kid a chance and let him finish the rest of the season. Our D will have us in the rest of 3 remaining games. My vote is for Peters going forward.

No, it was his job before he got injured and this team still has a ton to play for.   Peters never beat him out and quite frankly hasn't shown me a thing.

I think Wisky in Madison will be tougher than OSU in the Big House.  The Badgers will be looking to make a statement to the selection committee for a playoff spot.  A Michigan upset would be a huge victory for this young team.

If we loose to Wisky, we likely finish no higher than third in the division.  If we beat Wisky we could finish tied for first.  The Wisconin game is huge!
