This Should be Patterson's Last UM Game

Submitted by nickelsarcade on October 5th, 2019 at 4:00 PM

The experiment should be over after this game. Shea simply cannot lead this offense. He refuses to sit in the pocket, and when he does, he focuses in on one receiver at the expense of all others. His vision is terrible -- he consistently misses open receivers. And he has no sense of pocket pressure, which creates a bizarro world where he sit in the pocket when he should be scrambling, and scrambles when he should be standing tall and delivering strikes. Michigan lost a year of DMac and Milton's development by bringing Shea on the first place. I assume the idea was Michigan needed to win now and he was more polished. Clearly that plan failed. Time for the young guys to get reps. If we lose some, at least it was for long term player development (as opposed to fulfilling what I can only assume was a promise Harbaugh made to Shea or his dad when he initially came here).

Out his ass? Also let me go ahead and get this post out there since ive got my time machine working.

Sometime early November 2019

”Bench Mcaffery the experiment is over, he cant hit open receivers and we cant move the ball. Bring in Milton and lets see if we can salvage the season”

Also late November

””Bench Milton the experiment is over, he cant hit open receivers and we cant move the ball. Bring in “fuck if I know”  and lets see if we can set up next season”

lets hope our AD isnt Matt Millen college edition.

Fans call for QBs to be benched way too often. But... shea is terrible. He misses open receivers constantly. He gives when the obvious read is to keep. The offense is clunky and not in sync when he's in there. I think his terrible offensive line at Miss screwed with his head and ruined him as a QB. Sure, it could be worse, but we aren't winning anything of significance with Shea so there isn't really anything to lose by replacing him.

But She's can't be terrible because he was a 5* and everyone knows that stars and recruiting rankings are all that matter. Just look at Alabama, or Clemson, or Wisconsin, or USC or Tennessee. These teams all constantly recruit really based on star rankings, and this is the only reason all of these teams win.

Shea should’ve been replaced after the first game. He has not played a single good game and our offense continues to struggle with him at the helm. Not sure why JH is so stubborn with keeping him in there. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Next year our only options are Dylan and Milton and I think Dylan has already separated himself. If our WR’s don’t jump to the NFL, next year could be special...playoff special but our season will be determined in the first 6 games. Do you really want Dylan making his first start at Washington next year? Wouldn’t it be better for him to get half a season as a starter under his belt now so he has some confidence before the first game?

UM opens at Washington, then two easy games, and then they are thrown straight into the fire against Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan State. Dylan needs to be ready to go next year and I don’t want to sacrifice his development for the extreme long shot that this team wins out this year and wins the Big Ten and possibly makes the playoffs.

Ruddock was solid Harbaugh’s first year, but did it really help anything by having him here? Speight lost a year as a starter because of it and for what? Who knows what the following year would have looked like if Speight would’ve started and developed more in 2015.

What is the downside of playing Dylan? Surely he can lead this team to 10 points. If we lose a game with Dylan, I’m guessing we would probably lose it with Shea also. Make the change now and reap the benefits next year.

Patterson wasn’t that good when he transferred. Check out his stats from Ole Miss, it’s comparable.  With that being said, the coaching has done absolutely nothing to help him.  He was forced into a new offense last and a pro style offense isn’t his strength.  He hadn’t developed the footwork or timing needed.   Now he is back in his natural style of offense, another change, and no one knows for sure why he doesn’t run the ball.  If it was on Shea that he isn’t running, he should have been forced to.   Whether by complicity or by direction, it is on the coaches that he provides the running threat of Tom Brady with the Patriots.   There is simply no excuse and it’s as much or more on the coaching regardless of the cause.  Next man up at QB will have the same coaching issues just as they have had in the last 4 years.

He was better in last years offense.  The offense was better In every way and likely would have been better this year.  But the fans bitched, changes had to be made, and here we are.  Instead of tweaking we overhauled and all suffer the wrath of change.

All that said, Dylan should start every game forward if able.

Your opinion is hot garbage. Offense line is struggling. Shea is not the QB he was hyped to be (but uh lots of people had their concerns). There is no evidence to support your claim that Jim can’t coach a qb. I remeber Wiltons progress (until he and his dad got to big for their britches), and I remeber Jake getting drafted, as you do.

I really just fucking hate douche bags like you. Come in here with hot trash opinion. Probably never played a second of high level competition athletics. With you waist size of 42, sitting their in gym socks that haven’t been inside a gym

Either support the team or get the fuck out. And don’t let me hear this demand excellence bullshit. Hope you were demanding the same shit 2009-Jim

Look, I don't disagree that the playcalling is not great, and I feel JH has turtled at times. Still, I think this play calling shows what a lack of confidence there is in Patterson; Shea's lack of confidence, teammates lack of confidence, and the coaching staff's lack of confidence.

Because he locks on receivers, they are easier to cover on designed routes. Because he can be inaccurate, many of those timing plays are ineffective. Because he seems to have difficulty with reads and makes some questionable decisions, having him progress through three reads often leads to problematic results.

I don't begrudge the kid, but it seems to be one of those situations that he has some talent, but lacks that confidence to put bad plays behind him ...

Agree with most of what you’re saying.  However please don’t put msu in the same category as osu and Notre dame.  Michigan will beat msu, not because I’m having rival biases simply because we play them at home and they are very pedestrian on offense.   Yes yes, we’ve been pedestrian as well but we at least have talent on that side of the ball, they don’t.

There was a time in 2017 when this blog confidently said O'Korn should be the starter because of how he looked against Purdue, then confidentially christened Peters after his game against...Rutgers?

It can be an indictment of the team that the QB position is this bad.  But the idea the order is messed up rarely plays out.

And some guys bat .124 and hit one out of park on occasion.   That’s not a reason to run the fucking offense

Shea is better than our 3rd sting qb.  Or maybe we should start McNamara?   You must be dialed into practice to know the entire staff has no clue who can best win games.

I agree. McCaffrey should have started last year and we would be rolling by now. I hope he gets the nod soon because this is stupid

In a perfect world, or on any other Top 20 ranked football team, Shea would be benched. I can say that as a fact if Shea were playing for ND, Brian Kelly would have pulled him sometime in the MTSU game. In a Jim Harbaugh world, it ain't happening.

I said this all last year and during the recruitment of Shea ... Makes no sense all the great things we heard about Dylan during practice and how he was embarrassing our 1st team defense.. Only for Harbaugh to basically give up on him for a less talented player

This probably should have been a snowflakes post, but I think the majority of us agree with you. The problem is the likelihood of that happening is slim to none. Our coaching staff doesn’t know how to evaluate or develop QB talent, of course they’ll stick with Shea.

I had hope for this last season that he will declare. Time to prepared for the next starter. From a Starting QB decision stand point. Harbaugh is more stubborn than all of our past Michigan coaches in the past 20years, I mean Carr.

Shea obviously wasn’t great today, but you’re clearly blaming all of our offensive struggles on him and you look like an idiot.  Our offensive line was atrocious most of the game, and the play calling didn’t do anyone any favors...

BTW this is why our fan base is toxic. It’s one thing to complain after a loss like Wisco or Army, but Michigan just beat 14th ranked Iowa. Take your insufferable takes elsewhere for now.
