Shea Patterson appealing for a 5th year?

Submitted by Jamezz23 on December 8th, 2019 at 2:24 PM

There are some rumbling of Shea trying to get eligibility for a 5th year. I was kind of looking forward to moving on from him this next season, not sure how I feel...

Whats your take on this? Maybe he builds on his last 3 1/2 games and becomes the qb we all though we had from day 1

Bredeson, Onwenu, and Runyan are out of eligibility, so they cannot be back. It is unlikely that Ruiz leaves unless there’s a chaotic offseason. This is the first year in a long time that I feel good that we’ll have players step up behind our departures on the OL.

Everyone expects Collins to leave and probably DPJ. I would love to hang on to DPJ, but people who think he’ll stay because he wants to be a doctor aren’t thinking clearly; it’s a football decision, and he should make his choice based on what’s best for his football career. Med school will be there later, and tuition is a lot easier on you if you make millions in the NFL first.

Black should return; I’ll be very disappointed if he’s not back. Bell obviously looks terrific, so that would give us two good outside options with some good choices in the slot.

Some people will always think the backup QB is the way to go. Milton will become the new popular guy once Mccaffey has his first bad game. Shea getting a second year with Gattis would be big time. We would see a great offense. Not saying Mccafrey couldn’t, but if we can keep Shea we absolutely celebrate that.

Shea played the final 3 games of his freshman year a couple years before the 4-game redshirt rule started. Can/does the NCAA apply that rule retroactively?

I’d be a bit nervous about this. He was much better late in the season, but he’s still a liability in the running game, and his results were still only pretty good late.

Meanwhile, Michigan needs QBs for more than next year. If Shea returned I would have to believe that we lose both DCaff AND Milton (you say no way; I say that Justin Fields and Jacob Eason both started for schools that weren’t Georgia this year).

OTOH another year with the same offense is... enticing. Might convince a fence-sitting WR or transfer to come back. I think retaining our talented players this offseason is REALLY crucial to build on what Gattis has started.

I guess the reason this gives me the willies is that I no longer trust Harbaugh to develop QBs. We have a great prospect in McCaffrey, and I worry that if he leaves there won’t be anyone that good to replace him. You don’t have to look too closely at the playoff field to see that having an elite QB is a HUGE part of being an elite team, and Michigan has not yet fielded an elite QB.

This will be Harbaugh's 6th year. I, for one, would like to see him start and finish a season with a QB who he actually recruited and developed. That was supposed to be his number one strength, coming in. You certainly can't be an elite college coach if you can't bring in your own QB and win with him. Yes, I know transfers like Mayfield, Fields and Hurts are successful, but they are still the exception to the rule. UM has had success with both Rudock and Patterson, but it's time to focus on developing a QB and bolster the roster weaknesses with transfers, where possible. I believe Brandon Peters is the only QB recruited by Harbaugh to win a game for him. That's got to change. Even if it's true about Patterson, that would mean the NCAA would have to grant him two appeals in his career, what are the odds of that?

If he came back for a 5th year, he would be able to continue with the awesome passing offense he was able to run with Gattis the last 1/3 of this season. There wouldn't be the awkward transition period that we had the first several games of this year. Plus, it'd help a lot to have an experienced QB for the first game next year against a good team in a hostile environment (Washington). I'm all for it.

Most of us expected Shea to make a big jump this year. It didn't happen. Michigan is at its ceiling with Shea as QB, which includes 2-3 losses. Shea just doesn't make good in game decisions and that isn't going to change. I would rather Michigan moves on from him as QB and gives Dylan his opportunity.

If Patterson returns both Milton and McCaffery will have an opportunity to beat him out. Of course they won’t, since shea is better than them. You think Gattis and Harbaugh just think Shea is a nice guy so they let him play ? Some of you are so ignorant.

Still don't get why anything involving Shea would affect Milton. DMC has two years of eligibility left. Shea staying another year (which isn't even possible) doesn't affect Milton's future. And if DMC did leave to have two years to start instead of only one, then Milton would be looking at potentially starting his final two years here.

Why does it matter if the QB was recruited by us or not? You get the best QB possible, by any means necessary.

3 of the 4 QBs in the playoff are transfers. The last two Heisman winners were transfer QBs, and the odds on favorite this year is as well.

This “play your own QB” argument is nonsense.

If he is granted that 5th year, I hope he spends his time in the weight room, in the film room, on the field for 7 on 7 drills....not on the golf course.

It would be great if Shea gets one extra season. If there is a 5 star QB in the portal who wants to come to Michigan, I would take them as well. 3 of the 4 playoff teams got their QB from the portal. Then we would have 4 QBs all competing during the spring and summer and the best one will win the starter spot.

This is a huge mistake.  Not talking about talent or performance but the feelings and confidence of the QB backups.  If Harbaugh supports this move then the two backups who have been waiting to play will consider themselves to be not good enough and will transfer.  Any QB recruit will look at Michigan and think I’ll never play because Harbaugh always, if possible would rather play a transfer.  Time to move forward not stands still.

Loved how Shea turned it around towards the end of the season, but it seems like it's time to move on.

Let's see what McCaffrey and Milton have.

Whatever he does  should be supported by us. If he stays, may the best QB play and hopefully the other will get some playing time. All that said ain't no way the NCAA would allow that, lol

I think at some point you have to play a guy you recruited.  I’d like to see Dylan or Joe take the reigns.  I do worry about Dylan - his build is so slight.  I think realistically both will see action.

I think let Harbaugh make the decision.  He gets paid millions for these kind of decisions.  He knows what SP can do for 2020.  If JH thinks SP is the answer, then he’ll pull the trigger. It’s what JH gets paid to decide.

If true this would be a great thing for Michigan in 2020.  But I would feel a little for the other QB's in the room waiting for a shot.  Yeah, if they're better than Patterson then they would be playing, I get that argument.  However, I would think that a two year starter and 5th year senior would get every benefit of the doubt with Harbaugh and Gattis.  He would have that built-in advantage.
