Shea looking like Shea at Senior Bowl

Michigan QB Shea Patterson off to a miserable start on Day 2 at the Senior Bowl. He’s missed short, he’s missed long, he’s thrown a couple outright ducks and he just got chewed out for dropping a second snap.

I'm honestly not sure. In his limited snaps last year, McCaffrey really didn't show much in terms of throwing. He'll definitely be an upgrade over Patterson in the rushing and read option departments, but I'm not sure his passing accuracy will be any better. Also very nervous about his durability

Go back and watch McCaffrey when he does throw.  It goes Hike>caught>evaluate routes>throw (or tuck and run).  In addition to Shea's happy feet he was frustratingly slow in figuring out who to throw it too (and then underthrew/overthrew them).

If we are to be #speedinspace you have to have a QB who gets the ball out.

I sorta wish this site made everyone's older comments accessible because I swear a bunch of people ragging on Patterson now were gung-ho about him for a long time and, in the event he does wind up playing in the NFL, will undoubtedly jump back on praising him at that point.

He wasn't a great QB at UM.  He's probably not going to be a starter in the NFL.  But every year someone on the team becomes the focus of scorn by the fans and it's really annoying and disheartening to watch.  Like, you don't need to rah-rah cheer everyone on, but the glee people get pointing out how someone struggles is just obnoxious.

Football teams are so dependent on their QBs. We don't have the overwhelming talent in the two-deep to beat OSU without an excellent QB. But we have enough talent that with an excellent QB we could do it. So Shea's mediocre, and our reasonably talented team is nothing more than that. Perhaps it's unfair to the QB to be so critical, but what is more realistic for Michigan to accomplish: flood the depth-chart with top 100 prospects, or pick out an excellent QB every few recruiting classes? As has been pointed out on this thread, coaching, in terms of talent identification and development, must have something to do with this mediocrity.

That quote drives me crazy because literally the next line from Gattis is "but he looks lights out and his footwork and ball placement are great" and everything else you expect to hear.  And if you think the whole offense struggling to start the year was Patterson's fault that's your choice, but there were lots of issues well beyond his control.

It sucks how this last season played out and how his play never lived up to the hype he had coming here. Let's not shit on him though. He's a Michigan grad and alum, whether it's football or something else, the hope should be for him to have as much success as possible.

When are the keyboard warriors on this blog going to stop defending Shea Patterson, Jim Harbaugh and Don Brown. Patterson is nothing more than an overrated high school QB. He left Ole Miss because he was going to be replaced. Bottom line is that he is not very good and will not be drafted in the NFL. He was promised the position by Harbaugh and the other guys had to sit. Who cares if he is an alumni? He was average to less than average at UM

There was some pretty good feedback about Shea from the practices. Gotta wonder if Shea is just a practice superstar then it never translates to games

I have been thinking this myself. It always seemed and sounded like he was great in practice and it never translated to the game, and I got to believe Harbaugh isn't just going to have him start since he "likes him". He had to see something in practice that made him keep starting him.

I’ve never seen a Michigan player who actually for the most part was pretty good, get shit on as much as Shea. Shea lost 7 games as a starter here. Do we win any of those games with a different QB that we had on the roster?

2018:

Notre Dame: defense doesn’t show up until after halftime allowing garbage Brandon Wimbush to tear us up. Shea plays a decent game almost bringing us back.

Ohio State: offense scores 39 but defense allows the most in rivalry history.

Florida: Shea plays poorly but again D was awful.

2019:

Wisconsin: Maybe with a different QB we keep it close first half but no matter who was QB we still give Ben Mason the ball from the 5 and the D still allows 4 first half touchdowns

Penn St: Shea plays one of his best games and throws a ball to tie the game that Bell drops.

OSU: Shea makes some good throws but isn’t very accurate. No matter who is QB I don’t see our offense scoring more than 56 to keep up with OSU.

Alabama: this is the only game where Shea’s performance was so bad it probably cost us the game.

Realistically we win 1 maybe 2 games with a different QB. We probably lose to NW in 2018 without the way Shea played. Throw in 2018 MSU as a possibility too.

Yeah I think this is romanticizing. We couldn't mount a drive against ND in 2018 until McCaffrey sparked the offense.

Those 39 points against OSU in 2018 weren't all against a defense that was trying. That game was worse for us on both sides of the ball than the final score implies.

He definitely cost us 2019 against Wisconsin.

2019 PSU was garbage Shea. I recall badly wanting him benched.

So in 2018 ND it is Shea’s fault that Gentry drops a pass in the end zone after Shea completed a 60 yd pass to Nico and Will Hart drops the FG snap?

He cost us allowing an easy opening drive and a Taylor 75 yd run and having Glasgow on the DL and no one at the A gap on 4th and goal?

What about DPJ and Nico’s drops early vs Penn St?

Shea was not great, but neither was most of our team. Yes he wasn’t the QB to keep us in shootouts but it’d be nice if we could stop a nosebleed vs OSU the last two years and maybe not cover the fastest player in college football with a slow footed safety after allowing said receiver get a 20 yd running start vs PSU

If Army wasn't so stupid to throw on the goal line, that's a loss almost on par with App State. That fell completely on the passing game. The reason fans are hard on Patterson is because of all the hype, 5-star, etc..When you pretty much look like the average 3 star for much of your career and can't consistently hit guys downfield or fumble the ball around 12 times in a season....That's why he took/takes so much heat. Maybe that's not fair to him but that's the reality.

Shea was an upper middle class version of Tate. Maybe an upper class version, but certainly not a rich man's version. Around the time of the ND game, he became productive enough to avoid going with Milton or a concussed McCaffrey.

But I don't see the need to dance every time Shea does something bad on the football field.

Let the guy chase his dream. You'd be lying to yourself if you would refuse this opportunity. If he fails then he fails but for the love of G-d I hope he makes it. If for nothing else because I would love to have had and opportunity to change my life and the lives of my family in such a manner.

Shea, if your reading this, go get it man! But regardless, make the most of this life no matter where it takes you. We've only got one shot.

Peace.....

The coaching staff appeared to be failing in several areas.  The secondary is weak, the receivers don't get separation and rarely catch difficult balls and the QBs are grossly under prepared to read defense and make plays.

All that and the time management and complete failure to have the defense prepared to play against any decent competition.

Damn. I know Shea wasn't Joe Burrow but I think the Bucknuts and the Spartys are kinder to Shea than some of you people are. Lighten up and try not to openly hope one of our guys is publicly humiliated

I honestly don’t see how anyone can really expect better QB play next season. It is clear that this staff can’t develop QBs. I really hope to be proven wrong but I am not holding my breath.

I'm one of the more negative folks, because the eye test keeps indicating that some things are wrong with the program. Those things seem to be recruiting, player development, and in-game coaching / adjustments or lack thereof.

If it's tiresome, neg. We can pretend I'm losing points. Whatever.

I'll close with something positive -- I hope the 2020 QB competition is really a competition and that we play the QB that gives us the best chance to win. Our scheme on offense is improving, so we should be better next year. Let's hope so.

Many comments here by supposed Michigan "fans" are disgraceful.

What a shameful pack of jackals.

My best wishes to Shea, a fellow Wolverine, and I hope he is drafted and ends up doing well.

It would be very strange and disturbing if your speculation were true. This mentality does not lead to career success in coaching, and it seem like Harbaugh likes to win.
